PICKERINGTON, Ohio—The American Motorcyclist Association will not participate in the 2021 Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme Motocross of Nations, Sept. 25-26 in Mantova, Italy. Ongoing COVID-19 mitigation efforts and ever-changing travel restrictions presented logistical challenges that contributed to the U.S. team’s decision.

“A number of issues have contributed to the logistical difficulty of attending the 2021 Motocross of Nations, on both an individual and team level, and these have been exacerbated greatly by current and expected COVID-19 mitigation efforts surrounding the event,” said AMA Director of Racing Mike Pelletier. “Due to the sizeable financial risk faced by all the team stakeholders, and the unknowns in play here, we came to the unanimous conclusion that suspending our participation was the responsible decision.”

“The AMA takes great pride in our efforts to compete in the Motocross of Nations each year, and we hope to return to the Motocross of Nations in 2022,” Pelletier added. “As we look forward to competing again in 2022, it’s our goal to bring back the Chamberlain Trophy to the U.S. once again.”

The FIM-sanctioned Motocross of Nations is a world championship team event featuring three-rider national teams. They compete for a combined score, which determines the overall championship-winning country.

The U.S. team is the all-time leader in FIM Motocross of Nations overall team victories, with 22 overall wins. Most of those wins took place under five-time Motocross World Champion and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Roger DeCoster’s direction, with the most recent U.S. Motocross of Nations win coming in 2011.

Not surprising really, I’m more surprised the race is even going on. And without USA fielding a team it loses a lot of its magic and just becomes a Gp that the top riders don’t want to race at as it’s mid season.

Writing was on the wall, but bummed nonetheless. It's a weird time in the world right now.

This MXoN is shaping up to be a bit more like the World Cup of Motocross that took place at Glen Helen back in 2002 when a promoter failed to make the proper Motocross of Nations happen at Competition Park in SoCal. Many of the elite riders that had planned to race still showed up, but it was far from a stacked field.

I'll still watch it, but the stakes and hype are pretty low for the event as it stands.

I don't think this comes as a surprise to anyone. It would have been a much bigger surprise if we sent a team.

The fact that most riders and personal are not willing to vaccinate most likely sealed the deal.

This year's team never had a shot.

Are the top U.S. rider and teams just not interesed because the event is so monitized by the promoter? Our best don't want to spend their time and money for an event that is not connected to their own livelyhood?

Honestly they should really just cancel it. Terrible timing in the middle of the GP season so most top tier GP riders don't want to race it, pretty much every strong nation with a shot of a win or podium is not sending their best team except for The Netherlands and some aren't even going at all. USA is confirmed to not go, seems highly unlikely that Australia will send a team as well. At that point when nearly all the top tier riders won't go, what is even the point of running it? It's just not going to feel the same, and honestly it's just making the whole event look lame. I mean how many people will even care about who wins it when the field is so empty anyway?

That's what makes this whole USA not attending MXoN a head scratcher.

3 USA based riders are representing Puerto Rico, yet USA can't attend?

Makes absolutely zero sense.

Might have to pull the plug on team Puerto Rico to save face

Years ago not having Team USA attend was a big deal since they were always the favorites to win. Not so much anymore. It will be a great event regardless. Pulling for the Dutch now!

It certainly sounds like vaccination status is an issue based on the EU COVID rules that changed within the last week or so, including Italy.

So, it's time to root for Sipes, Schock and Masterpool! Should make the A final for sure. But what is their ceiling? Top 10? Top 15? Maybe just top 20?

And Webb if Barcia isn't healed up.

Sorry, but it’s just laziness, lack of respect and commitment.
The event was placed in the middle of the MXGP season just to allow your guys to participate and then you step back. Personally, I don’t appreciate it

+1. The race is going to be very lacklustre in term of depth this year. No USA. No Febvre, Ferrandis, Renaux (red plate holder), Gajser, Prado, Fernandez (title contender MX2). No Geerts (title contender MX2). No Roczen, Seewer or the Lawrence brothers. I’m a huge fan of this event but this year should not go on considering how many riders have dropped out.

The Puerto Rico team should just sign up as the US team.

Team USA dropping out in part because riders are unwilling to get vaccinated is objectively the funniest outcome possible for the 2021 MXoN. Embarrassing really, top GP guys have presumably been vaccinated and no one has dropped dead yet. You’d think our guys would be able to read the room.
