Anyone thinking the engines are narrow need to install a pc exhaust with the long silencer.

It makes it unreal. My cousin has that with a jd jetting kit for the stock carb and the engine is amazing. So strong everywhere.

Great bikes but you have to know how to setup a two stroke. The stock head is pretty bad and factory assembly of the top end components a bit sloppy. Get a head cut for your use, fuel and altitude, make sure x and z dimensions and pv spring/preload are right and it’ll run awesome. You also of course have to fix the carb, and then jet it properly. The number of people who both know how to set up a two stroke and have a body that can hold onto a good running 250 for a full moto are dwindling!

I am sure loads of guys coming from 450s after reading all the two stroke gush pick up these bikes and realize don't wanna deal with carbs and jets and needles and pipes and power valves etc etc.

I am sure they are mega good once dialed, but most modern 450s you just add gas, press a button and ride an engine that can meet any conditon without messing in the pits

Of course, 450s are insanely easy to ride. Can put them in 3rd and just about never shift also.

But that’s what makes the 2 strokes fun, is that they take a bit of effort. But when you get them right and are having a good day yourself, those days are magical I think!

1. Many "older" guys buy them and take better care of equipment.
2. Husky buyer is more responsible in general as they are more expensive.
3. I believe many are first time Austrian buyers. They are very different than a 01-20 Japanese 2 stroke.
4. People have many other hobbies and other things competing for their time..bike sits in the garage.

I had a beautiful 2018 TC250. Traded it for a 450 after 6 months. Looking back if I would have put a lectron, better fuel, and a flywheel weight I would have grown to love it. It didnt have the hit I wanted and I wish I would have kept it.

How often do people think you need to jet these? We have a summer jetting spec and a winter jetting spec, the main and the pilot can be changed in 5 minutes the needle takes about 10 minutes. Warm the bike up every day prior to riding set the idle and leak jet and done. My son prefers his 250SX over his SXF any day, we basically keep the SXF around so he can ride schoolboy. Thinking about selling it and getting a 125 or 150 for schoolboy.

People buy into the two stroke hype and pick one up. They quickly realize how much harder it is to win a motocross race on a two stroke when competing against 450cc four strokes. Two strokes are fun to play with, and for a trail rider, they might actually be an advantage. With the way the rules are currently laid out, two strokes are at a disadvantage when competing with four strokes in a motocross race.

Not a hater, just reality. I’ve been beat by riders on two strokes. That just means they would have put even more time on me if they were on a 450 four stroke.

Most who ride 450 can barely handle them and ride tight and scared. We race the 250 2T against 250 four strokes all the time as it is legal locally and AMA at the amateur level. The 250 2T is an advantage, pretty sure its 12lb lighter and has ten more HP than my kids second bike a 250sxf. Its a cheaper way to have a great bike for both 250 and open classes. Leave it stock and it runs with mod 250's and the stock 450's. Yes the 350 is a nice option but its only legal in the 450 class. My kid is by no means a superstar he has only been racing for 3 years started riding 5 years ago. He is a 20th place kid at the LL regional level. If he can ride one of these than damn near anybody can.

If the 250cc two stroke is such an advantage over the 250cc four strokes, then why don’t you see a starting line full of them in the 250cc classes at the ranch? Just because it compares favorably on paper in a few areas doesn’t make it easier to ride faster on a motocross track.

The FMF fatty pipe & silencer achieve similar results…..add the richer main jet & the missing top end overrev is there in spades…

No doubt a 450 is easier to ride…. I had to have several of my FI 450s remapped to correct a poor stock setting, Just like jetting only I had to pay someone to do it…..

Because of the stigma and todays kids view 2 strokes as old slow outdated equipment, they want daddy to buy them the latest greatest 4 stoke because racerx said it was sweet. We lined up against quite a few at the areas and regional level. There's also a decline in the mechanical aptitude in this country, yes you have to do a $200 dollar rebuild every 30 hours, I know a lot of four stroke owners who do zero maintenance. Ride till it starts acting up than sell and get new or ride until it hits 70-80 hours than punt. "runs great just needs the valves adjusted"

I wonder how the Bill's pipe/silencer does combo on the 250 SX/TC?

As the title really, I’m in the market for a lightly used TC 250, seem to be load for sale with under 10 hours on them. Whereas the enduro TE seem to be well used before they’re moved along. Is there a reason why?

People like the idea of a 2 stroke then can’t get along with it?

Uncontrollable monster?

Just like peoples opinions on the topic, maybe you’ve owned one and got rid quick, or it’s the best bike you’ve ever owned. Not up for a 2t vs 4t debate, I have no interest in buying a new 4t. Cheers.
I bought both this spring, the TE is still in the garage along with a factory edition 450…

Pretty sure Canada allowed 250T to race with 250 4strokes…. Pretty sure some guy won a title on the 250T …
Pretty sure the next year they started handicapping the 250T again….. if MX sports had ANY balls at all, they would allow the 250T to compete in the Pro Nationals ….. solely based on the fact of cost to participate….

I've got two austrian smokers, they are a pain to jet... swapping mains and needle clip is no big issue. But once you have to start changing nozzles and cutting slides, people get annoyed.

Then they spend all that money on a lectron, that simple fix isn't so simple when you need to swap out air box boot and throttle cable etc only to have a carb with the choke on the wrong side and if it doesn't run perfect off the bat, you don't know how to adjust.

They work GREAT for off-road.. The motor is extremely tune-able but it definitely needs some love (pv tuning and jetting). I’ve had a 15’ TC, 17’ TC and now on a SX. I sold my 17’ in November of 2019 with just over 200hrs on it, 90% of the hours were off road and Offroad racing, rest were Mx.

Buy a slide if you don’t want to cut it.

I have over 300hrs on mikunis since ktm switched and zero problems. I’ve came to the conclusion that anyone who bitches about the kuni’s simply can not jet a bike.

They come with 14/49 now. 14/48 is the ticket unless you like shifting and a narrow window of power. 14/52 would suck anywhere other then on a SX/AX track.

You're right about people wanting to try a 2 stroke. I know a few local guys who went from a 450 to a 250 smoker thinking it would be more fun. All of them are back on a 450 now.
Some riders really do like riding a 2 stroke. They seem to sell a lot of them. There's no right or wrong though.

But all that said, jetting can be a pain in the ass.

I ride a 21 KX 250 for my primary bike. A while back I bought a mint 19 KTM 150 to play on. It's a fun bike, but I wouldn't want it to be my only bike.

Ok, ‘17-‘20 bikes. Did they change the internal gear ratios? I looked at ‘21 and ‘22 models and neither mention anything about internal gear changes. I did see they’ve worked the HP up to almost 50 from the 46 of the ‘17 bikes.

My buddy just built up a brand new one and put it in a crate to ship to Italy for the ISDE. His other one has probably 250+ hours of off road use on it.

They must be decent for off road I figure.

*He does swap out for a different carb than stock.

Echoing the comments about the motor being pretty rough out of the box, at least on my 2017. For as much as the bike tests proclaim its a great engine, I thought it was severely lacking top end. I messed around with the jetting for a while before deciding the send the head to Ron Black to get the squish band reworked to a more conventional design for mid-top end. Bike runs 100% better now. Also threw on a PC pipe and silencer just out of habit and it runs great. Mikuni carb is dialed in sweet, no need for a Keihin but I would have preferred it came with one.

The gear ratios are weird, but it works.

Thought I’d update this as had a lot of good advice from folks and these threads usually disappear without anyone knowing if a bike was bought.

I was very close to buying a tc, even had a deal lined up on one but something was holding me back. Started to get more interested in the TE as most of the racing I do is off road now and I have my Rm set up for Moto anyway. Another big pull is the fact that TE’s are road legal here.

So that’s the way I went, 19 TE 250, light use, going to race it Sunday and see how I get on with it! First Austrian bike and certainly first fuel injected 2 stroke. Sunday can’t come soon enough!

Had a 21 KTM 250sx and only way it felt like a rideable two stroke was to dial in the power adjuster almost all the way, then i could ride it good but the bike went no where fast. Moved back to a 350 and thats where im gonna stay, sorry two stroke fans, just wasnt the ride for me, sold it within 10 hrs

Had a 2018 ktm 250sx.

Pro circuit pipe, jd. jetting, pro circuit silencer,

Loved that bike, also sold with under 10 hrs to go back to 350.

I tried it twice doubled down and lost both times i will not even consider a 3rd time around. Thats my 2 cents

My 01 yz250 had a far better engine than my 18 tc250. Just couldn’t get along with it.

Try 14/52 and you’ll like it better. Almost the same mathematically, but different chain angles so the rear suspension isn’t in a bind under load.
They come with 14/49 now. 14/48 is the ticket unless you like shifting and a narrow window of power. 14/52 would suck anywhere other then on...

Ok, ‘17-‘20 bikes. Did they change the internal gear ratios? I looked at ‘21 and ‘22 models and neither mention anything about internal gear changes. I did see they’ve worked the HP up to almost 50 from the 46 of the ‘17 bikes.
Same gears 17-22.
