I’ve only seen it on the neck welds. That’s not a good sign.

What did you do? Those spars aren’t exactly weak.

Not sure how it happened? Son came in from riding, wash the bike and noticed it.

It looks dented inward like it landed on something hard like a rock.

FYI, the front end of the bike is off because we are putting the x-trig triple clamp on his new bike along with his valved suspension. Racing Red Bud.

That's terrible! Hope they get you sorted and glad everyone's ok. Maybe it's just all the weight and how wide it is

Sounds like they pulled the parts off that bike to put on a freshie for red bud.

Heat may have caused that crack. I see evidence of re-welding on the frame spar and that subframe doesn’t look right. Heat discoloration and grinding/sanding around some of the welds and someone left a large piece of wire hanging on one of the welds. We’ve all seen some ugly factory welds on aluminum frames from all OEM’s but these are extra ugly and I’ve never seen original welds with wire still hanging on…

Makes me want to see the welds closer to that crack.

So, I just looked up a new frame. $1687 at RMATVMC. That’s better than I would have guessed considering what mountain bike frames cost.

For some reason I never thought of checking for OEM frames, I thought that was like the one part you can't replace since it has the VIN on it.

Turns out yeah, like $1100 for my old bike and they're still making them, CHP will transfer the VIN.

I was getting stressed lately about how much money I've been putting into a bike with some frame rust and this makes me feel much better.

Well it’s clear from that shot that he’s squeezing the bike so hard with his knees that he cracked the frame. He must never skip leg day, eh? Wink

I'd like to see more pictures of the frame now that it's naked, if the OP could do so.

As well as the original outside picture, a look at the inside of the spar, and, the same 2 views for the LH spar would be interesting. Underneath the spar near the crack point would be useful, too.

I might go to the local Yam dealer to have a squizz at the Spars profile.
