2005 yz125 fire

Soooo my bike caught on fire on Super Bowl Sunday from a gas leak. I got the fire out in about a minute and a half I think. Mainly just the engine area burned. So far i took off the plastics have this list that needs to be replaced:
Cdi wires
Throttle cable
Clutch cable
plastics
Gas tank
Oil cap
Seat ocver
Carb hoses
Maybe ignition coil forgot to check.

Is there anything i missed that i should check or do? Will 2021 plastics fit fine? If not what’s the difference? Will a 2021 yz125 gas tank fit ok as well?

The frames are identical, from what I understand. 2021 plastics will fit if you replace the airbox and airboot. If you're thinking Acerbis, email those guys with your fitment questions: ridersupport@acerbis.com.

I'll second what Falcon said, but you don't have to replace the air boot, unless it needs to be. The only problem is the wiring harness, CDI and stator plate are 2005 only parts, but if I remember right, it's mainly related to the connectors and the way the wiring is ran, because it uses the current flywheel. Maybe someone who knows for sure can chime in, but I can't remember for sure that the differences were. Other than that most everything else is a straight swap to 2020 parts.

I've seen a bunch of four strokes catch fire. There was a fairly new ( from what I was told ) KXF that totally burnt up at the last winter series XC race.

About the only two strokes I've seen were KTM's that the headlight caught fire ( scary common it seems ) and then they got dumped on their side. Once you do that it's pretty much all over.

You should get the R-tech kit! They have gas tank and plastics included! Looks more unique than normal YZ plastics and you have to change your tank anyway

Were you able to discover the reason behind the fire so it doesn't happen again?
I suspect the only thing hot enough to ignite gas vapor would be the exh pipe at full throttle so the temps are high.

The difference in the stator is the length of the wire to plug into the wiring harness. I want to say the 2006 and up stator wire is shorter. But all the connectors are the same.

I saw one, a '05 CR450 with the backfire screen removed. It was a backfire that caused it when he hit the rear brake hard, let off then cracked the throttle. The high speed bump start and shot of throttle did it.

Inquiring minds want to know. Was it an external ignition source?

I cringe every time guys come on here and talk about using gas to clean chains and filters etc. I've seen quite a few fires with injuries from people using gas outside of the tank.

Correct. The 06+ connector is further up the frame, away from the stator. I discovered that when chasing a bog issue on my son's 05.

Pretty sure I still have a stator and/or coil from that adventure. I'll look when returning from the track.

Sooo i was riding on the street and I fell... I think my gas might have leaked when I fell and sparked on the pegs or engine? I don’t know but when I got up and turned around which wasn’t even a second later the bike was on fire. I ran with it across the street and put it out.

I didn’t really check the air boot I will check that eventually but I remember seeing before that the number plate is different where it screws in it or the front fender but I think it’s just a very slight difference in the plastics

I will check them out but I have to change my gas tank anyway that was the reason this started unless the bike just caught fire from me falling

Yes, that's right. I forgot the '05 has the pins on the plate and not the clamp. You could go with the Cycra plate that doesn't use the stock lower mounts or simply put some bolts in the the holes to make pins, as we did back then.

Nope, don't see the electrical items. Likely e-bay'd them a few years ago.

Your tank might still be fine/usable. Likely what happened is when the bike laid over gas came out the overflow tubes on the carb and caught fire from footpeg sparks. The tank should be good unless the subsequent fire melted it. Take the tank off the bike, clean it up good, fill it with gas and check for leaks.

Make sure you replace the carb vent hoses and route them correctly (up and over from each side). The bike will not run correctly with missing hoses or hoses that are too short or routed incorrectly.

I "think" the R-Tech kit ha an adapter for the number plate if he goes that way.

There is a company in the states that sells the kit for $499.

I went on Motosport and looked up the schematics I have basically everything I need in the cart except for the airboot

Try to check SKDA, my friend knows the owner well and was one of their first athlete in the US in 2017.
Their quality is really good and I would think they do the Rtech kit.

Update: throttle was getting stuck at carb shaved sleeved and fixed that. took apart the carb and cleaned. Bike starts and runs and I can cruise but when I try to hit powerband the bike tends to bog I would say. I thinks a seal went bad from the heat Im going to have the bottom end rebuilt

Swapped carbs and it still does it. I don’t think it’s the stator since that side didn’t take too much heat I’m guessing there aren’t any burn marks on that side will post pics.
