I think a lot of the injuries could be attributed to how skinny the riders are, christian craig looked horribly lean at the start of the year with no muscle. Look at the hit mookie took on the concrete floor the other weak, i think his build helped him with that impact.

"The bigger they are, the harder they fall" In the end, gravity always wins. Everyone has noticed certain riders who get injured every time they hit the ground. I think it just depends on the specific makeup of the individual. Some people are just put together more solidly than others, as far as bones, ligaments. I think it has little to do with how "in shape" a person is, tho a good balance of muscle mass to your body type certainly can't hurt.

Are you racing at all? The extra 20-30 lbs *could* make the difference between being out front in the first turn or in mayhem, especially on a 125.
I used to try and ride super aggressive and my arms/shoulders would get super tired (no arm pump though). I slowed it down just a tad and was able to ride 20+ minutes no problem.

I would drop down to 165-170. A light body built for speed always beats strength. Winningest basketball coach John Goodman said. When I had to win a big game. The quickest player always got the ball. Think of big basketball moves, the same as corners. If your weight is lighter your in threw and out of corners much quicker. The sx core is the pass on the 450Smile

More so... when you look at guys like Peick and Mookie, would they have more energy left in the last 10 minutes of a moto if they were packing 10 lbs less muscle? muscles are great for the ladies, but demand a lot of energy late in a moto......
To counter this argument, wouldnt you have more energy at the end of the moto if you were physcially stronger?

The stronger you are the less energy you use doing the same activity, provided skill level was the same for both.

I can attest to something a member said on here once: proper riding technique will ALWAYS outweigh fitness.

The question i have moto bros, is it better to be a bit heavier and have muscle or to be lean and skinny for moto? I ask because last summer my weight was around 165-170 all cardio work but never felt "strong" so after heavy gym time this fall and winter I'm floating around 195-200. should i keep cutting and try to get weight back down to where i was last year at risk of losing all my progress in gym or stay where i am and ride my 125 harder?

To answer your question

You should be aiming to be phsycially strong and cardio fit with a clean maintainable diet. Ignore trying to hit a goal weighr and focus on a strength goal and cardio goal.

Same as for most sports: strong enough and as light as possible.
If you have enough power to execute your riding technique every bit of extra muscle mass is just weight you have to support and the bike has to pull.

This^

Strong legs and through the abdomen but no need, in fact a distinct disadvantage, for a built upper body.

Keep that center of gravity low.

Heavy cyclist/cat 1 mtb racer here with 0 gym effort and a healthy diet. I can’t get below 189 without starving myself lol. I’m 5–11ish - 6”.

Bro! the only problem without a built upper body is your t-shirt looks like it's on a wire hanger, and you can slide through vertical blinds without disrupting them.
