Local Walmart for me seems to have lots of criminal action. I’d skip the Walmart.

Very sad to hear this. An innocent life lost to a thug. This reiterates the point that people need to be their own first responder.

Dude that is terrible. I always make sure I have people around me at the house when I’m selling something. Plus I have neighbors who are almost always outside. RIP Mr. Vindel you should still be with us. Hope that scumbag rots in hell
I would never, ever have a potential buyer come to my house. Like, ever....
Well this guy wasn’t at his house and look what happened. Would rather be at home where I’m armed with plenty of people around and have tons of neighbors outside watching.

I'm in favor of bigger garages and never selling bikes. Let the collection grow! Smile . Seriously though, I've only sold a couple of bikes over the last decade and both to the same guy. Talked to the guy over the phone first, he was cool af, had him over to the house, hung out, he bought my stuff and is a new friend/riding buddy. There are good people out there too. Usually pretty easy to tell in a couple minutes of conversation.

Never have people show up at your house, and always carry if you live in a 2A friendly state.
Dirt bikes are thief magnets.

I learned my lesson a long time ago with having people from CL show up at my house. I was selling a high-end DSLR camera, and had someone respond to my ad. In a moment of insanity I gave them my home address....well, I see this hoopty show up, and this tweaker in a long black coat with his skanky gf get out - just covered in meth sores. I grab my .40, shove it in my waistband, and meet them in my driveway, doing my level best to put out my alpha male apex predator signals. It was pretty clear that they intended to rob me, but thought better of it. After they left I actually took down the CL ad and just kept the camera...lol.

Best to meet at a well-lit, public area like others have said - preferably packing concealed.

Like I said, I hate selling stuff. Bikes are tough because it's not so convenient to put them on fleaBay and deal w/shipping, etc. I try to put anything else dirt bike related on Vital Bazaar....

Nobody goes on a ride unless I have their cash in my hand...
Just sold a "beat with a heater" and I'm the same way. Yes, you can test ride it all you want, but I have to have cash in hand first. The people said "What? Don't trust me?" I said "Nope, it's $1200 for the POS and $1200 to test it" lol Even made them sign a contract saying the car was As-is and that I no longer hold any liability. Tried to cover all my bases on that one

I got really lucky. Found a brand new dream bike and met a great person on my way home from my son's soccer tournament, 2 hours from my house, at 8:30 at night, at a Love's gas station in a town I never heard of before.

Around here people come see your bike and simply make note of your address. Then they come back later and break in. Insurance through statefarm is only 200 bucks for full coverage on our bikes.
That love's looks familiar... I75 exit 95? Complete pain in the ass to get out of?

Just yesterday I saw two stories on FB groups that I follow. One was a guy who had his bike (KTM) stolen with the old "test ride" trick, and the other was a kid who was killed selling a mountain bike. Here's what I do: Assume that everyone you're dealing with is a murderer. Take every precaution that would dissuade a potential murderer. Don't do something stupid out of desperation. Let them know up front that you'll only meet under YOUR terms. Public place (preferably police station) and absolutely NO test rides, I don't care if I have money in-hand, or not. If you don't know what a 250cc 2-stroke rides like, then you probably don't need to be buying one.

My dark side got a chuckle out of this (as sad as this reality is).

If you're a seller on Craigslist and agreeing to meet with someone in person, you absolutely must do the following:

1) Always talk to the person over the phone. Never agree to meet with another person strictly over text.
2) Ask them to send you a picture of their driver's license before you agree to meet somewhere.
3) Never go alone
4) Meet in a church, police, or school parking lot.

I dread selling bikes, I have been using fbook marketplace the last few years. I go through a full vetting process to make sure the person is legit. If the person looks sketchy I just tell them it’s sold. Most often I sell my bikes to friends or people that can be verified as decent. What a sad state of affairs we are in if you cannot even offer something for sale.

Also, trust rides mean full payment up front. I also recommend meeting at the Sheriff's Depth like ShadowGlen said, and I carry concealed at all times...

Can you actually shoot someone for stealing your motorcycle? Seems like your life isn't in danger with the way the world is now days this would land you in jail instead of them.

Probably not, but if they're trying to murder you I'd say that's an affirmative.

No way I'd want to trade a human life for a dirt bike, but deterrence is a powerful tool.

Last 2 bikes I sold I met the people at a local practice track. Both on a Saturday and I took a bike to ride in addition to the one I was selling. Told the guy at the gate that I was there to practice but also was selling a bike and the buyer was meeting me here at the track. Buyer will only be here 10-15 minutes to test ride the bike, pay for it and load it. Both times the track refunded his $30 entry fee when he left. Plenty of room for them to test ride the bike with no issues and very difficult for them to steal it at that point. Worked perfectly.

Imagine living in a coutry where you can actually trust people? I have sold 3 bikes during past year and none of the buyers have brought cash with them. Its pretty common here that after test drive you give your bank account number for the buyer and he will make the bank transfer.
Last bike I sold at December, the buyer did not even had his internet bank passwords/login details with him and I just said to him that he can make the money transfer when he is back at home and he did.

Yep never bring someone to your home when conducting a sale. They are looking to “scope” things out. I will only meet someone at the state police barracks. No test drive. Phone interview/ vetting process prior to meeting for a sale. It’s amazing what you find out about something just listening to them talk. If they only text sorry nice try.

We call this Finland...

Last time I used cash in vehicle purchase/sell was somewhere in 2007. These days bank transfers show at your account almost immediately.

Might think twice in situation like described above, but easily can see that happening if buyer seems to be really trustworthy

I just keep mine insured till after its sold. That way if they want to steal it. Ill get more money from the insurance company. I have seen this happen to a friend & it was not pretty, thief rode off on bike & never came back. Called the cops then his insurance & was paid $3200 more then he wanted for it. Bike was a 2019 KTM 350xcf & with progressive there is a $3000 aftermarket parts payout if you can prove it with receipts.
