The Yamaha is a great bike. It just didn’t work as well for him, in supercross, on that team.
Look at the results BRO

On that basis, You can't even begin to compare a ten year old bike to what is currently being ridden.
I'm aware of the generational gap between.what JS is riding to the yammy of today, however JS looked far more nimble on the Kawi than the Yammy but anyway.

In recent times Webb and barcia are good examples, it's a night and day difference how they rode the yammy and the ktm/GasGas.

If people cannot see the difference in how both those riders are when they were on the yammy they're delusional.

Especially Webb.

Ferrandis is also battling the shit out of that 450.

The yammy 250fs? Fantastic bikes.

People using JS as an example to show the YZ450 is not that bad?

Ummmm, didn't he literally break his contract mid-year to get off that bike and get on the Suzuki? Laughing

And how much of that was mutual with Gibbs?

This was almost a decade ago. It literally has nothing to do with the current state of the bike.

The Star Yamaha and the Yamaha plessinger and barcia were on last year are worlds apart.
The issue isnt the bike, it was the factory Yamaha team, Reed has mentioned this before.
Put a podium guy on the star 450 it will get a podium.

My opinion, it is completely relevant. The "issue" with the YZ450 is inherent to the reverse engine layout and has remained constant since 2010. Yes, there have been changes to the bike since then that have reduced the problem but the basic character that is tied to that engine layout has remained unchanged.

Seems like the more rutted the track is the bike gets better. AP and Malcom both seem to be around where they need to be. Ferrandis is a rookie on a 450 do he will be up and down.

I wonder if somewhere deep in Japan, Yamaha are quietly dabbling with a 'conventional' engined 450 for testing purposes only. Lets not kid ourselves that it doesn't happen- I bet they're testing a Honda, Kawasaki & a KTM too..

I had always figured Ferrandis may struggle a bit at first in 450s. Not because of the bike, not because of his riding nor speed... but because of his starts. The guys in the class are too experienced/capable to charge through every race after a mid pack start as was typical for him in the 250s -- gaining back each position is a battle

Hell...those Yamaha 250's suck ass too.

Last week, it caused Colt Nichols to crash...and this week Christian Craig.

Junk I tell ya.....total junk.

People keep mentioning Webb, but seem to forget that he even admitted he wasn’t training nearly as hard and was only practicing at 75% vs being with Aldon and training/practicing at 100%. His words.

I've been saying it for years as the Blu Cru continues to defend their prized pig, the blue 450 is a horrible bike for supercross and it will continue to take it's victims with Ferrandis being the latest. It seems Star was able to improve the bike a bit but it's still nowhere capable of battling at the front where Barcia is now on his new bike. Barcia is night and day better on his new bike, just like Webb and the others who stepped off that Yamaha.

The blue 450 is a fat heavy pig just like my Suzuki which is not an issue anywhere else unless you are riding at the top level of supercross. I can't believe the blu cru can't accept this? Barcia and Ferrandis (and Webb) have confirmed this bike is not a top level 450 supercross bike. If anything I figured Malcom and Plessinger would put in a few good results because they are bigger guys who can wrestle the pig. Ferrandis would be better off riding his 250 in the 450 class.

For the blu cru guys who want to continue to defend their bike (which is a great bike for everything other than supercross), watch Barcia very nicely call the yamaha a fat heavy pig at the 1:30 mark:

How does the Y450 fair at the euro GP stuff?

How does the Y450 fair at the euro GP stuff?
I have no idea but are you really comparing GP to Supercross??
I have had people put words in my mouth many times, but this one is rich. No, not comparing GP to SX, but the narrative here was the Y450 is an incapable machine, so, I am curious with how it fairs in other high performance events. The bike is a tool-and you experts are saying the tool isn't good for SX-just curious how the tool works elsewhere.

Some good mxgp results but we also know they don’t have to follow production rules so who knows what they are doing with it. Nothing looks as good as the ktm and 21 Honda’s right now imo. Eli looks like he is turning a dump truck out there

Same issue the 250 is having? Damn that reversed cylinder

Why don't they just ride the 250 in the 450 class? That's legal is it not?

It’s for sure a better mx bike than sx but I also think Different bikes are better for different riders.

Obviously barcia looks like he fits better on a steel frame, but I don’t remember him doing any worse on the (current gen) Yamaha than did on factory Honda.

Malcom on the other hand looks more smooth stable and in control of the bike than I’ve ever seen on any other brand.

People in here hating on the yzf need to at least quit lumping every backwards engine Yamaha into the same bike. The bikes Js7 and Webb rode are not the yamahas of today. Just like ken isn’t out there on a 2009 stinkbug honda.

Can we all acknowledge the bike is not on par for supercross? How many careers need to be sacrificed? Ferrandis is an elite talent and can’t do anything. Plessinger is finally able to be mediocre after 3 years, barcia looks like he’s riding a 85 compared to the heavy blue pig, and web of went from bust to champion. I can’t believe people still defend the Yamaha.
Well dunno cause I went pretty fast on mine today at Barona and even hacked the triple. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

This is the reality. A good team can make a bad bike perform. I’m excited to see what Star can do with it and what improvements will trickle down to the production bike.

This. Remember JGR developed a ton on the first Gen of this bike, including the wrap around exhaust

Qualified 3rd fastest.

Something happened that put him down to last. He was there for awhile and came back to 11th.

Have another beer and sit down. Get over the Yamaha argument. You placed effort into digging up a thread just to argue.

Problem is even if they can somehow ride that fat pig in qualifying they cannot get a start. It’s been well documented when they add power it handles awful. So to make it rideable they tune it down and get shitty starts. Awesome machine they have there. Everyone should have one.
