Ever watch and hear 'em yell to their kids? Ever watch them yell at their kids?
Now imagine them doing that shit into a microphone for an entire race
Imagine having to hear that bullshit in your ear an entire race at 6 years old
The closest thing I can think of that has a similar intensity and focus would be gymnastics.
How practical would it be for a coach to relay anything to the gymnast via an ear peace. Can you imagine how absolutely distracting that would be. Think of a floor routine and being distracted by any voice coming into your ear.
SX/MX is very similar.
The second you get distracted you are going to crash and get hurt. The only way these guys can race at this level is by being in the zone. It’s focus beyond focus.
Those that know what it means to be in the zone will understand the absolute distraction and danger of having radio com in your helmet at a high level of racing SX/MX.
I understand pro riders are different, it's all second nature. While doing a triple, they're scanning the track, doing math and figuring out dinner afterwards....amateurs not so much, we're struggling to just not eat shit, and then some dude is going to bark shit into my ear?
FT
I keep seeing people mention this and I’m wondering if there is any correlation to the level ridden when seeing the thoughts.
If anyone has been to a local race and seen mini dads, they know the shit show can of worms this opens. If anyone has ever raced at a decent level or higher, they should know that when you are in a race, it’s you and the bike. That’s the plus of this sport, being one with the dirt bike. Now we’re gonna require full on race teams and spotters for every rider?
No thanks. Save that for Ricky Bobby and keep it away from Supercross which will in turn trickle down to the local races just like when you go to a local car race, they all use head sets.
They are also being quickly adopted in Nitro Radio Controlled Cars now (Because they are so redic loud) and those pros are also super focus machines. They seem to do fine with chatting in their ears.
My point is that the rewards would out weigh the small risk of adding them.
Im old school as you can get... but I think I am on board with this one.
My worthless opinion.
I support a race radio type one way system, but not this,
spotters don't belong in Motorcycle racing,
Oh but itll be coming to the stupid mini-parents. What is the collective noun of a gathering of mini-parents??
Trackside flashing lights would be a better option for the Red Cross flag.
As for the blue flag issue, I’m sure a software wiz could build a system that uses the transponder data to send a signal to a light on the bars (or even to inside the helmet) for when a rider is about to be lapped.....etc.
Pit Row
MX/SX is not a team sport... GTFO of my ear.
As far as Ryder goes.... We'll get there. We'll race 'em when it's time.
In helmet communications must not be too distracting if they can do it then. As long as it’s short updates and nothing more it would probably be fine. Blue flag, red flag, cross flag, give updates as they pass mechanics area on flat ground.
Just get the riders with difficulty seeing flags an appointment at the optometrist and be done with it.
We don't allow it in karts because it's lame and you lot should think it too. I disappoints me any dirtbiker would think otherwise.
MX is chaos! The whole thing is chaos. A whoop can throw you sideways in a blink. A tiny short on that single to table, and you too could have a baby arm.
When you drive F1 or NASCAR or any pro level of racing, you mind learns to process those speeds, to slow it down in the drivers mind, so 120mph feels like 65mph to us mere mortals.
That's why radio comms are different in auto racing than MX. I think even road racing you can get away with it.
MX/SX? Not so much.
Not a fan of the plan.
Only way I can see this working at a pro level is somehow geo fence an area to receive comms...like a mechanics area. Where that is, they can get a board and short message "You're P9, point zero one short of last lap. You need to get #15"
