Haha, fantastic! I've had a few puke as soon as they got out of the plane, one hang his head out the door as we were taxiing back in, and one let his pancakes and eggs go all over the floor of the plane. That was fun to clean up.

Yeah, I laughed a lot at that. I had a similar story. A guy locally took me up and was flying me all around doing crazy stuff... I didn't throw up, but I was wobbly when I got to the ground.. I never even got to speak. We went from one maneuver to another endlessly... Afterward he said he was trying to make me sick and was proud of me for not upchucking...

Absolute gold... I've watched at least 3 times since I initially heard it on the drive to work yesterday, and was losing my shit in the truck Laughing

That was funny. My best friend does aerial photography from helicopters. Years ago he asked me if I wanted to go with him that day and I had never been in a helicopter so I said sure. He told his pilot that I raced motocross so I was “good”. Didn’t know why he said that until we were up in the air over the job site and the pilot said “Okay, let’s have some fun.” He basically turned the helicopter off and we started falling in a slow spin canted sideways. As this is going on, my friend is leaning out of the chopper to take the photo he needed. The pilot used the fall to like bump start the helicopter back up, straightened the chopper back up and started to regain the altitude we lost. I didn’t puke but I damn near shit my pants.

Auto-rotation. They say a helicopter can land without engine power if it starts high enough. The momentum of the chopper falling through the air rotates the blades enough that they produce downward thrust nearly equal to the force of gravity acting on the aircraft. I sure wouldn't try it.

Yep, that's exactly what the pilot called it!

If it makes you feel any better, the engine wouldn't have been off, just at idle. The clutch disengages and the whirly bits keep spinning as the air rushes up through them. If all goes according to plan in an actual engine-out emergency (which means things aren't truly going according to plan), the same thing happens. As long as you are descending and have little pitch in the blades, things are fine and your descent is in control. Once you get close to the ground, you can then reintroduce pitch to the rotor blades to produce lift and cushion your landing. It's a delicate dance as you have a finite amount of energy stored in the spinning rotor to then use to create lift. As you introduce pitch to create lift, you also create drag, which slows the rotor down quickly. Slow it too much and the blades can't create lift. In the vid below, you can hear the rotor rpm slow way down right as he is setting it down. Full-down autos are rarely practiced by most as there is a risk of running out of RPM and having a hard landing. Usually, right as you get close to the ground, you'll reapply power and recover. And that concludes today's layman's lesson on autorotations.

Ive only done that once in a helicopter, and it’s genuinely the only time I’ve stepped out of an aircraft shaking.
