Best thread ever on Vital!

A little story for you guys...

Over the weekend I was up in the area where Mayson lives with a good friend; driving back to his house we passed Maysons house (growing up in the area I knew exactly where he lived when Hammer posted his address).
My friends 15 year old son is in the back seat and said "oh yeah that's Maysons grandpa's house." Apparently they go to school together.
I asked if Mayson was a good kid and he said "Yeah he's really nice to everyone"
Those of you with teenagers know that's pretty high-praise.
Just wanted to share that little story. Made me feel even better about this whole thing.

No real updates - everyone is back to work and school. Mayson said he needs to get his grades up if he expects to get shop time to put parts on. Wink Sounds like a lot of kids in this era of remote schooling. My boy struggled with it for a few months too.

Hopefully he has access to the help he needs. My 8th grader went from easy straight A's to struggling to get C's with virtual learning.

Same with mine. Even a D or 2. And mine had no excuses - he has all the resources he needs and he’s smart. We tightened the screws and he’s back to B’s. Good lesson - it takes more effort and self discipline.

It's been a while since I've logged on to Vital and when I did this is the first thread I clicked on. WOW, what an amazing thing this has turned into. I read all 15 pages but I had to take quite a few breaks because my eyes kept leaking. The Dirt Diggers North M/C would like to be part of this. We would like to invite Mayson, his Grandpa, Hammer, and Hammer's son to be our special guests at Hangtown 2021. My son is the current President of the club and I know he will be more than happy to make sure this event will be one you will never forget.

Hammer, I'm going to leave it up to you to contact me or any other club member a couple weeks before the event so we can set you up with the appropriate credentials. You'll want to hook up with Billy or Mark Hilton.

Although our country may be having problems the moto community is and always will be solid. This type thing is exactly why moto has been a huge part of my life for almost 50 years.

That's a great offer - we will take you up on it! We've been to Hangtown many times over the years, sometimes doing the Amateur day races as well. It's been a big part of my family's life and we have some great memories - running into Dungey on a Fox photoshoot, a great rider meet-n-greet down at the Capital back in 2011, the boys getting a champagne shower from KRoc one year, and lots more. Many times we went with Mayson.

My email is mike@hamershock.net so we can touch base a few weeks out. We'll bring the hauler down and our bikes, and ride local tracks for a week or so with Mayson, wrap all that around the Hangtown weekend.

We'll throw in a couple comp'd entries for the amateur day if you're thinking of racing.

Me and my boy will for sure. We are regulars on PNW tracks, and I'd love to race Hangtown again. It's been 6 years I think since I last raced there. Mayson is on the fence - he doesn't have many gate drops in the last few years.

THANK YOU!!!

Looks like Hangtown 2021 will be September 11th - last round this year. Hopefully it's not 105 degrees in the Valley at that time!

That is the same thing we are hoping. Being at a state park and considering the current status of the pandemic this seemed to be the best approach to be able to have a race at all. If all goes well we will be the last race of 2021 and the first race of 2022.

Yeah, makes total sense to schedule it late. And we've seen everything at Hangtown in May from 40s, to pouring rain, to 95+ too! NorCal weather can be unpredictable in the Spring.

We are also looking forward to Washougal this year. That's our home track now and it too was missed on the 2020 schedule. I think I will fly Mayson up here to join us.

I'll check in with Mayson and his Grandpa Rick. I do know Mayson had some grade issues and got in some hot water over that. Might have delayed things a bit. The Grandpa he lives with is a bit old-school and isn't the motohead that his grandpa Rick is.

They are hoping to make progress next weekend. Mayson's grades have come up so he's off "restriction".

I know a kid lives out near Placerville. He's been my boy's best friend since they were 5. Mayson is 14 and just got a well-used CRF150r. They don't have a ton of $$$. Anyone in the Sac area want to help me give his suspension a rebuild? Both ends need seals, oil, probably bushings. I'll pay for the parts.

Hammer 663s
Hey Hammer, we own a shop in Central CA and have been in the industry forever. We’ve seen motorcycles and the moto community save numerous kids’ lives and this is the kind of stuff that I love about the moto community. I love what you’re doing. We’d love to help any way we can. I can get you the parts he needs or would love to donate some other stuff if you’ve already got his suspension done. We can do the labor as well but it would have to get to us somehow. Please let me know how we can help. Thanks,
Tyler Wilson

Ty, about the only thing that's left is a slip-on pipe. We had one committed but it never made it for some reason.

Thanks for stepping up - this thread is still alive!

Classic Thread. In a way it is a good thing that Mayson ran into a little grade trouble to remind him that while there is great support for him, he will need to take care of business to enjoy these rewards. I know my kids struggled with grades and remote learning but have since turned the corner. This pandemic has been a massive disruption to the way we do things but we all have adapt, adjust and overcome. Sounds like Mayson did that and it was he himself that accomplished it. He should be proud of that and use it as a motivation to take advantage of this outpouring of support. Cannot wait to see his scooter when its done. My 15 year old has the same bike and it is in need of a refresh. We will be waiting to gather ideas......

The thing I like most about this thread is it’s an example of the moto community that I’ve become so fond of over the decades.

“Your bike’s broke, sure you can race mine. Let’s go!”

“It’s your birthday man, ticket and beers on
me. Hangtown’s going to be good. Let’s go!”

“Just bring you gear bag Ted, we got plenty of bikes.”

“Babes Ride Out in Gorman was so much fun, starting with a stranger who loaned me his YZ125”

So many more, but there’s no better feeling than helping out (or benefiting at times). It’s a passion we all share and more impactful (2021) than ever. Have a good weekend!

Looking forward to helping Mayson freshen up his bike and having him spin some wrenches too. Should make some good progress this next few weeks and get him out riding the weekend of the 20th. The Vital moto community here making it possible. 👍

Ted722 hosted Mayson for a day of bike building and maintenance this weekend. They made some good progress getting many of the parts installed. There is still quite a pile left to go and they will attack it again in the near future. Thanks to Ted for stepping up and helping Mayson move this forward!!!!

Thanks, it was a good start and helped him do a lot of the work himself too and stress the importance of maintenance.

Noticed in pic we forgot the JM485-3D cable guide. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Got the bike back to his place last night because of my work schedule and the fact he’s riding Thurs. and possibly Sat. too.

Sprockets/Chain
Rotors/Pads
bleed brakes
Levers/Plastics/some bling
Shift lever / Rear brake pedal
Air/Oil filter
Engine oil
Trans. oil
