Motocross success, thankfully is still, and will always be, heavily weighted to rider ability, over the bike, but, when you see how competitive a 2005 model bike, in the Yamahas (and now the 'Fantic' 125) with the barest (biggest being the forks [and shock?] in 2006) changes over 15 years, and the Canadians Suzuki (I don't know when the last 'generation' of the RM250 came to be, but I did see them on showroom floors into the 2010s here in OZ) , going up against current model KTM / KTHuskies / KTGeeGees, it does make one wonder about the amount of genuine 'progress' in bike design. Who'd even contemplate running a 2005 model 250F competitively against todays 250Fs at high levels of racing ..........?

Even at first, the only thing that gave the 4 stroke a slight edge over its 2 stroke competition was giving then double the displacement as they ate valves and were poorly aspirated by carburetor.
The last great suspension leap was the KYB SSS suspension which was released on the last gen
YZ 2 strokes as well as the the still new 4 strokes andbits still the best stuff today.
We took a huge step backwards with air forks and SFF forks and it took showa nearly 15 years to catch up to KYB.
The perimeter framed aluminum chassis has only changed in terms rigidity and Honda had that down on its last gen CR 2 strokes. The only difference is redesigning them to produce a new model bike in aesthetics.
Seats have gotten flat and mufflers are fully exposed.
I dont consider EFI or electric start to be "Genuine Progress" they were more of a means to fix the downsides of the 4 strokes and that was only a matter of time in addition to adding 15-20lbs to the bikes.
Bikes have mostly gotten heavier but far easier to ride fast so you can call that progress.
I feel that 4 strokes were a step back placed in what's still the standard for mx chassis design and the powerplant was gradually improved to meet the performance of the chassis already designed during the 2 stroke era.
My 2003 KX250 may be slightly behind the 2021 models but in the hands of a capable rider, at the local level it's not at the disadvantage of a bike made in the 90's and Jimmy Albertson hauls ass on his 98 CR250 right?
