I'm kind of surprised that the companies who own the energy drinks do not change up their sponsorships. For instance, Rockstar is owned by... Pepsi? Right? Why couldn't it be the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna team one weekend and the Mountain Dew Husqvarna team the next? I guess they want more consistent advertising.

I always thought it would be cool to see a red Coca-Cola Honda. They could run white "Diet Coke" Hondas at the Las Vegas SX or other special events.

At that level all of those different brands have different teams in the marketing department handling each brand with their own budgets.

In terms of Rockstar, they are not remotely connected to the other Pepsi brands like Mountain Dew. Completely different company than Pepsico. They are just owned by Pepsico.

The huge companies have realized they do not need to sponsor teams / sports any longer. They get a lot more exposure for a lot less $$$$ via social media promotion.

Wrangler used to be a sponsor. How about harbor freight or Zoom?

I like the RV/Toy Hauler idea as lots of moto families have rv’s.

CAT, John Deere, Kubota etc...Lot of moto guys that have their own private tracks and even locally owned public tracks use something to move dirt besides a shovel!

Those would be some things I believe would see ROI directly related to the moto community.
Doesn’t CAT already have the SX contract? To do the work with their equipment?

Yes, it's a marketing expense. That expense is deducted from any revenues and would reduce the taxable income of the company. But it won't reduce the tax by an amount larger than the amount invested. So it will still be a net cost to a company.

This is an interesting subject. Yes you are correct as all equipment is CAT but i believe its through a rental company or maybe CAT uses local rental companies to provide it. I do not ever see their logos or advertisements at supercross though. I work for a large equipment rental company, actually the largest. We sponsor an indy car team and the Indy Car series. Supercross in my mind, would be a good investment. We already rent 90% of the equipment to Lucas Oil Productions for the outdoors series and the TV crew.

I always chuckle at the "It's a tax write off for _____."

Yeah, well, maybe so but they still spent the money.

LOL. Yes, people use that expression as though it somehow means "free".

Pastrana and Windham’s SoBe Suzukis were some of my favorite bikes.
There was Blimpie Suzuki too, and Boost mobile sponsored Reedy for a while.

Haha Blimpie. Remember when subway was a big deal. Meatball sub, would be like no way that,s crazy. I had a meeting with blimpie, about buying a franchise in the 90,s. I had no idea what I was doing. I,m in Newark NJ. Busiest airport I,ve seen all year. So big buisness must be ok. Went for a walk, hit a little Italian restaurant, great food.

Yeah, Oakley changed from a motocross and ski goggle company to a “premium brand’ company and it got substantially worse once it was purchased by luxottica.

Oakley did have the coolest die cut decals back in the day. Then went to the O.

The team owner of that was a franchisee of several Subway locations, he did that with the blessing of corporate, but not sure how much beyond that Subway did.

That's a JT$ question for sure

I agree on the die-cuts

They've become stupidly expensive to make compared to even good quality vinyl stickies for freebees

Short answer? It's getting a lot harder to do.

I had a conversation with someone who chases sponsorships like this all the time, both in NASCAR and the MX/SX side. He told me that more often, sponsors aren't just looking to dump a bunch of money so that they can see their logos going around a track really fast. Now, they're often looking at it as a vehicle to build some kind of relationship with other businesses, where it helps offset the cost of the deal.

Also, finding the right contact person or decision-maker is hard, as well as building a relationship, and waiting for annual budgets to be approved. It all takes time. I remember chatting with one team manager back in the day, who said they had proposals out to somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 companies.

Pre-Covid, I'd often see unfamiliar faces under a pit tent, check the logos on their Polo shirt or jacket, and know who a team was courting. Good luck doing that in the current climate.

Remember when RCH had Microsoft logos on their bikes around the Seattle SX a few years ago? They were trying to show folks up there what they could do, and what activation could look like in their pit area.

Teams are having to get more creative, and come up with new ideas that have a hook for the companies involved. You're generally not going to see a company to suddenly decide they need to hand over a big check to a team.

When mx/sx takes itself serious. The pits are full of guys who were buddies to another guy and so on and so on. Agents are ex riders that don’t really do much. A team needs to hire a serious marketing expert that has connections in every market. In nascar, do you see ex drivers running teams?

Mertz (sp) and Chad Reed are the only guys who see the big picture.
