With the top riders changing brands after retirement, I wonder how much the “brand ambassador” means to the consumer when selecting a bike. It seems like bike loyalty has more to do with the current racing than the retired champions. I wonder if KTM even feels like they need someone. Perhaps KTM really didn’t have anything they felt like they needed to offer Dungey; anyway, I agree it just looks weird seeing Dungey on red. I would suspect us older riders associate past champions to certain brands more so than the newer generations, so perhaps the market data suggest it doesn’t matter.

We all can’t forget his brother has been a long time mechanic for Geico so there is ties to Honda. And after the whole parting ways with geico earlier this year he’s certainly not gonna run there graphics. That’s just a production bike with a pipe and a throttle jockey graphics kit on it. His brother probably just built him a bike to ride cause he’s got the itch 🤷🏻‍♂️ I don’t think there’s any brand ambassador shit going on here.

This is a business for the pros, and guys like Dungey don’t tag HRC or anyone else in their posts without being compensated in some way. I don’t think this is just a “my brother built me a bike” type post. And Dungey isn’t really the type of guy to troll people on social media, but who knows. Maybe he’s bored.

We don't know the details for McGrath and i have no idea why Dungey is somehow affiliated with Honda after the mystery Geico thing. I have no opinion on which one is more valuable, but Seely's attitude about Honda owing him something is irritating as hell. When you quit a job at Home Depot, you no longer get your employee discount.

How many years did he work for Honda? It would be different if he stayed on with the race team or corporate and worked there for 25 years. C'mon man.

After reading about how KTM sued Max Markolf, I'm not surprised that they didn't keep Dungey.

DeCoster has more influence with KTM racing than anybody except Pit Beirer...and Ryan Dungey was his boy. I doubt seriously that they dropped the ball in keeping Dungey. Unless Dungey wanted to walk away, they would still have him.

...I still don’t understand why KTM management didn’t make a suitable offer to keep well spoken and clean cut Ryan Dungey as a brand ambassador after he retired, he and DeCoster are responsible for elevating KTM from an odd euro bike into a supercross championship winner and powerhouse brand in the USA,

You would think that was worth something to the boys in Austria?

This is 99.9% most likely a new playbike for the retired champ. But what if?

Haha.

I was referring to the fact that the timing of the release makes lots of people wonder if RD is making a comeback on a factory Honda. I didn't think so yesterday and subsequently saw the press release announcing Christian Craig riding the HRC bike, so now we KNOW it isn't true. Technically we knew that weeks ago, but now we officially know.)

I'll bet Dungey just wants to shred like the rest of us. Hopefully he can ride in a chill manner and be safe enough to enjoy it for the rest of his days. Good to see

After the whole Geico fiasco and the mystery surrounding it, this spins me out. Still cool AF. Looks amazing!
Agree...

Hearing the podcasts lately, there's a timeline:

-Dungey backs away from the Geico team.
-CC signs with Star Yamaha.
-Rumors of CC father in law backing away from Geico team (part ownership).
-CC father in law and Dungey still in partnership in owning (part) Intense Cycles (meaning relationship still good).
-Dungey resurfaces with Honda photo not showing any connection to Geico team.

Not sure what this says, but kind of interesting for a geek like me.

The opportunity with GEICO was more than an ambassadorship, he had ownership in the team. Maybe someday we'll find out what happened behind closed doors that changed his mind.

Depends if that rider provides value. In this case, Honda must feel RD brings something to the table and Seely did not.

I see what your saying. Imo seeley is still a bettter choice still being somewhat active in riding, is less robotic and more relatable than Dungey.

If that bike was really for RD5, it would be a '21. Just a leftover playbike.

I like to think that right before Dungey posted that he said to himself "Vitards heads exploding in 3.. 2.. 1.."

And will be 2 second a lap faster on the newest brand, and much more comfortable with the chassis and suspension. Every time they switch.

Dungey is an antique collector and he wanted a bike with two pipes for his collection.

This is actually true and when I learned it it legit blew my mind. Can't believe they don't offer their own employees SOMETHING as a break FFS.

The ONLY people with '21 Hondas right now are the factory HRC riders. Even the Honda support teams like JM Honda are still running '20s.

No offence to Seely but he also never won a 450 title, whereas Dungey has seven.
