Heard a tip from a guy in the industry that this stuff works great for grip tape.. 3M safety-walk slip resistant tape.. gray color. Black was too rough. This should help with traction, I can already tell.. God knows I need it on this beast.

It’s a rough, rubbery texture.. not like sandpaper or skater tape.

What do you use to cut the tape with? Chain saw?

Now put some on your boots and it’s pretty much velcro. You’ll need 3 people to get you separated from your bike.

Give a ride report once you’ve tested it.
I need something like that.

Was that bike recently recovered from the bottom of a pond, right before the grip tape was applied?

Love this idea, great tip thanks op. And who cares what it looks like, would be perfect for a mud race here in the UK. My bikes are meticulously maintained mechanically but who cares if it looks roached, it's for racing on in mud and all kinds of crap, not looking at !

Yeah, I too try to keep my bikes maintained mechanicly but they are far from perfect cosmetically. Function over form all day. I got 6 dirt scooters that get rode all the time, if I scrubbed each one with a toothbrush Id never have a life.

96 Red Bud James Dobb won the 1 st 125 moto, with a dirty bike at the gate. Scott Sheek didn,r hv a pressure washer either. I put skater taper over the air box, good to know there is a better product. And part of side plate, TP199 clear. I insulate under the tank, carb bowl, fuel line with a automotive sheeth for rock protection. 2 way sticky tape on clutch and front brake. Lap 7 of a 8 Lap race, riders are fading.

This thread is traumatizing. Laughing

I realize now that I may have been wearing rose-colored glasses during this project because of how long it took me to get the old tape off. I spent an hour and a half scraping off some hard plastic crap I put on there years ago, and when I finally got done, I smiled with glee as I applied the brand new, fresh-as-can-be tape in its place. It was like putting on a new bike part!

I was so excited that I just had to share it with my friends at Vital. But the first comment made it clear I had definitely lost my mind. Along with the second, third, and fourth comments.

Ya’ll city folk value looks too much. Up here in Alaska, utility is the name of the game. My piston is fit tighter than your girlfriend ever was and my carb slide is smoother than her baby’s bottom. Priorities, people.

Oh, and to anyone wondering: this stuff works. You can get 15 feet for 12 bucks at Home Depot. Thank me later.

Hey man it was all in good fun. It’s not something you see everyday. You do to your bike what you need to and it works for you. It’s definitely not a typical MX setup (which is what I ride) but if your doing more hare scramble and mud riding and it keeps you on the bike that’s cool. It made for an interesting thread so you get points there! Keep posting and keep er on two 👍🏻

I used some 3M black because I found a roll at work and the price was right, it’s some gnarly stuff for sure. I was more using it to try and protect my graphics from getting wasted after one ride. Heavy duty adhesive. So far it’s done what I hoped.
I’ll check out the grey stuff when I need to replace. Thanks for the tip.

It’s too bad the gray stuff won’t match your super clean bike. But yeah, the black stuff is quite a bit rougher. It’s designed for use with boots and other footwear while the gray stuff is for use with bare feet. It has a much more rubbery feeling but is still heavily textured to provide traction.

It helps me stay in place and doesn’t tear up my pants, so that’s good enough for me.

I bought a set for my bike and then bought a clear roll of Jessup grip tape and use the old cut outs to cut my own. Clear looks a lot easier on the eyes than black/gray, do they not make a transparent version?

You bought a set for your bike and used the cutouts? May I ask what you bought? Because if I could get grip tape cutouts for my bike that would be awesome.

And no, unfortunately 3M does not offer different colors for these treads. It’s only gray and black, each with a different texture/roughness.
