Recently picked up an 03 YZ125 from original owner with very, very little use. Even still has stock tires. I just got done with a 2000 YZ125 build and am so excited to get this one going. Already have a hefty parts list, as I’ll replace clutch, top end, plastic, tires, service suspension, etc. I love making these look, feel, and ride like they did when new off the showroom floor, with maybe a few mild mods- pipe and silencer, ‘00 power valve spring, grip seat in OEM color, etc. Here are a few photos from today before I get going on this one. Plan to ride this as much as possible this year. Had more fun on the 2000 last fall than on my 250F for sure.

Love seeing these 15+ year old bikes that have ridiculously low-hours. Looks nearly brand new!! Awesome find and have fun with the build... I'll be tuned in!

I agree, these older bikes are so cool. Like I mentioned earlier, the 2000 I built last year was so much fun to ride - passing guys on new 450's while on a 20 year old 125 brings nothing but smiles.

Your build is beautiful, and I can't believe it came out of a box...literally. Very nice work. For now, I'll be taking mine to a stock looking bike as much as possible with a few odds and ends. Suspension is in my truck for drop off to Pro Action today, and some of my parts have started arriving. I'll get some pictures in the works and try and do a total upload and update in the next week or two when I have everything back together.

Here's a super low hour '01 that I saved from the Black Plastic Crew. Bike has maybe 15 hrs on it. I'm looking for a garage queen steel frame 125 like the OP next. haha

Wow. That is beautiful. If you want a matching 125 here is the 2000 I just “finished” last fall. Built it to ride, but still looks good. Could use proper color on the frame tho and a stock pipe. Selling this one locally, need to post it on here.

If you feel like selling the stock 125 pipe let me know. I have a FMF SST in decent condition I would trade if you would like.

Thank you, however I’m going to hang on to it to stay with the bike. I do however have a GYTR FMF shorty that came with it, and I plan to pick up an FMF pipe to go with that as well for another option.

Suspension is at Pro-Action getting the full treatment right now, and some goodies started rolling in. I got a Works Connection skid plate and OEM front sprocket cover off eBay that I’ll clean up. The prices on these were too good to pass up, so I think the little bit of elbow grease will be worth the savings on these two parts. Other stuff is the majority of hard parts other than bars, tires and clutch which will be here soon. In the meantime, I’ve got all bearings greased and have a bit more cleaning to do. I’ll get photos of that this weekend.

Found this after removing cylinder today. I’m assuming I’ll need to send this out or get a new cylinder. Thoughts? Wondering if whatever caused this is why the previous owner put a new piston in it. It has an A size pro-X in it with very little time from what I can tell. But the cylinder concerns me. EDIT: it’s not nearly as sharp as it looks in the photo.

Is that on that low hour '03??? Bummer. Looks like the PO caught a ring in the exhaust port and just cleaned up the cylinder and slapped in a new piston. For sure get the cylinder replated and make sure they relieve the exhaust bridge. That's shocking as the bike has such low hours. I'd ask the PO if he happened to notice the massive gouges in the cylinder after he locked it up. Unreal.

My thoughts exactly. Just off the phone with my awesome local Pro Action guy, as he’s revalving the suspension for me, and he was shocked too. Says the suspension had absolutely no noticeable wear either. But, I’m this far into it, so will either get a new OEM cylinder coming, or if the stars align, my Pro Action guy may have a new lightly modded cylinder. I’ll know Monday which way to go, and will also call Millennium Monday to check all my options. Just wanting it all done right to have another reliable fun bike to keep for years ahead. I’ll give an update of which way I go with it. Luckily I have a pretty cool wife. 🤣

Here is the piston...looks like a fairly recent pro-x. If you run your nail across where the exhaust ports would be there are physical small scrapes in the piston. The PO said he recently did a top end, but failed to mention why.....now we know.

Has the drilled exhaust bridge holes... is the piston to tight for the cylinder? Just curious as to how this would happen on such a low hr bike.

Unreal someone would put it back together with the cylinder looking like that. Last summer I bought a low hr 93CR125, still on standard bore and stock B cylinder, which for Honda is actually a smaller OD piston than their A piston & cylinder. Well, Honda does not sell the B piston anymore and all aftermarket pistons are for for the A cylinder, I guess figuring such an old bike will have some wear to the cylinder so no one would need a B piston anymore. I got Pro X”s smallest OD piston and it was still to tight for my cylinder, luckily I found an original B Honda piston on eBay. . Do you have an A or B cylinder?

Unfortunately this is all I can make out on the current damaged cylinder. However the piston the PO has in here is an A, and the one I just received to replace is a B. I’ll have everything measured properly before reassembling with new parts. Any luck making this out?

Hard to make anything out.... you can send your piston in to whoever repairs your cylinder, they should make sure tolerances are correct.

Sounds good, and I’ll plan to do that. If I order a new OEM cylinder, I’d imagine I could choose the sizing? A,B, etc? I’ll get the info from Millennium Monday. I appreciate the info and input from you guys. Thank you.

I don't think you can preference an A,B,C or D OEM cylinder. If l remember correctly, about 95% of the time you get a B cylinder when you buy an OEM cylinder. If I were you, I'd pony up for a new OeM cylinder and topend. The bike is so new and low hour it almost deserves it. Hahaha. I went through something similar on my '01 250 that was super low hour.

Pulled out power valve assembly and studs today, and I’ve decided on a new OEM cylinder. I’ll order that up tomorrow and still likely send this one off to be fixed and have a spare if ever needed. Also straightened a few out of place fins one one radiator, and have a little push in damage on the other. It doesn’t leak, but I’ll be taking it to a local radiator shop to be fixed to like new. My cylinder is supposed to be in the first week of March so thinking I should be able to have the entire rest of the bike done and waiting by then. So long as it’s done and broken in by beginning of April when Red Bud opens up, I’ll be a happy camper. I have a feeling my 250F is going to sit a lot this year.

You know for the cost of a new cylinder you can have someone port it and replate it. Just a suggestion. Wink

The new cylinder is only about $360, while I found repair ranging from $200-$350 before any shipping costs. I’ll still plan to have this one repaired tho and have as an extra or and as you mentioned, research anything else such as porting to have done as well. 👍🏼

It’s starting to happen. The UPS guy is getting to be quite the regular. Thanks to Pro-Action of Michiana. And my wife for being cool that I started a bit of the reassembly tonight.

Here are a few pictures of how I've ended up so far. I finally got things together yesterday. I did the 2000/2004 power valve spring swap, and man - the spring from the 2000/2004 is noticeably stiffer, and you can even see the spring diameter is larger. I put on a new set of MX33's and this is the first tire change this bike has ever had.The clutch looked brand new. I replaced the fiber plates with new, and I'll keep the old as a spare set if needed. The bike came with an FMF GYTR Shorty, but I repacked and put the stock silencer back on - I'll get an FMF pipe at some point to go with the silencer, but for a stock look I've got the standard stuff on it now. New 971 bars, ODI grips, DID chain and went up a tooth on the rear sprocket. This was interesting, as the stock chain length is 112 with a 13/49 - I put a 50 rear on and had to get a longer chain - I cut a new 118 to a 114 - In the past all my bikes have been able to utilize stock chain length when only moving one tooth, so I thought that was interesting. That is the stock seat cover that is in nice shape. It's still the old "non gripper" type, so it's a bit slippery and I'll add a new seat or cover with gripper material at some point. It looks like the 02-current complete seats are interchangeable, so I may order a complete 2017 OEM seat which is grippy and has the color match with the blue sides and black top. Complete new OEM cylinder is on, new top end, spark plug, new plastic, new chain slider, the obvious little things, as well as a front and rear revalve with new pistons, internals, etc from pro-action. I'm excited to get her fired up and broken in soon, as the weather will be turning here and I'm planning to ride this as much as possible. I just need to order backgrounds/numbers, decide on a fuel, and start having fun with this "new" bike. It feels SOOOOO light when moving it/pushing it around....very excited. I'll post a few more photos once I get the backgrounds on, trying to keep the older look to the number style as well.
