For suspension look for a Devol link or Noleen link for the back if you can find one. Yamaha copied the rising rate of those aftermarket links in 96 design going forward. If you can't find the cool aftermarket parts you can just pick up a 96+ swingarm/linkage ... more »

Added reply in a thread 1980 IT 465 vs YZ 465 shock help info 7/13/2020 5:11 AM

Most of the difference between the IT and the YZ will be the shock length but Yamaha typically did this with an internal spacer but the shocks are similar. This is old school technology so you can bring it up to more modern specs. These shocks benefit ... more »

The 80 IT was a 425 and a cousin to the 79 YZ 400. 81 was a white IT 465. Big difference between the 425 setup and the 465.

Definitely following. How about the HRC 300 cylinder for the Honda ATC? I thought those had specific heads though with one more stud but I could be wrong on that.

Yup nice and simple yet do the job pretty well for being "out dated" compared to the modern bikes. Find some KTM pegs to replace the old narrow ones, you have to grind off some material but they are sooo much nicer on your feet. Now the real question

Cool project. I've raced a 79 YZ400 and YZ465 in the last few year in the local vintage series. That motor is similar to what is found in the 78/79 YZ250 and 79-81 IT250. They also didn't change much on the chassis as I have a 81 IT425 frame hanging ... more »

Nothing like finding some period mods you can't get anymore. Like a first generation vforce delta valve. Now to just find the matching Noleen pipe for that silencer!

That should be fun. I was able to get the bike over the weekend. Looked like a 20 year later version of the picture. Had some stuff on it that I don't remember including having Craig at Ccycle go through the suspension and add his ultra adjuster. The

It's a piston port motor. Your going to get blow back until the piston closes the intake port. If it really bugs you go find a GEM or other aftermarket reed valve for that model.

Yeah Rob was ahead of his time. Probably got burnt out with all the meatballs demanding perfection but not knowing how to set sag. Lol. His was by far the best I tried at the time. I hope to get the old girl back this week or next.

I was watching that for a while. Just couldn't pull the trigger not knowing when I would get my bike back. I had a Noleen pipe and stock silencer. IMO stock was fine but the Noleen pipe ripped! I know I put the stock back on when I sold it I just hope ... more »

Use a hand pump to slowly put pressure in the reservoir and watch the seal head slowly work its way out. Be careful not to go to fast as it might pop out and make a mess! Then remove the inner clip and pull the valve body out.

It's pretty easy to bring the 77 to 81 YZ shocks up to near modern performance. Yamaha and KYB were good about using a 46mm bore for 30 years so modern pistons fit on the shaft and there are plenty of aftermarket remote reservoirs with compression adjusters. ... more »

Damn I need to get a vapor blaster. Those parts came out great. I resort to pressure washing the grime off and either wire wheel everything or good old fashion hand work.
