I find it hard to believe that Ralph is more expensive than Leigh Diffey. Leigh is a top-level motorsports guy, doing Indy and F1 (when it was on nbc for a few years).

I am much more inclined to believe they brought him in to give his input on how to improve things on the broadcast as a whole.

But that being said, im sure the fired ms supercross tweet reader has the hot scoop.
If Diffey is a cost saving, damn that is a twofer... These boys aren't on peanuts, either.

There will always be filler segments on the broadcast. These are usually beer/snack/bathroom breaks for most viewers. I don't know about you guys but I would much rather see Juliana's face and body on the screen than Jeremy McGrath talking about whatever he talked about during the A1 broadcast (I didn't pay attention).

If this world wasn't so PC now there would definitely be a way to incorporate bikinis and hot bodies into the filler segments. For example, Juliana could make stops at the team tents in a team colored bikini and interview the mechanics about the bike as she sits on the bike in her skimpy JGR themed bikini - "So J-Bone, can you tell me the suspension setup you are using tonight? Does it ride rough and hard through the whoops? Are you going with a longer travel fork tonight? Is the rubber hard or soft? "

Ratings would skyrocket. Sex sells.

Heres my take on the broadcast Saturday night....

Leigh Diffey or whatever his name is...he is an awesome and professional commentator. He knew the sport, the names and didnt make any mistakes. However, with him and the other chicks super heavy accents, this feels like MotoGP or MXGP and not SX. Him and the chick were very good and very professional but damn, they just have such heavy accents, its distracting.

Go ahead and hate, but I think an American Series should have an American look and feel to it.

Ricky was too excited and stuttered alot but he looks good back near his riding weight. He has a way to go but is getting better every year.

The short dude, Daniel is just awesome! More Daniel.

I think Leigh mentioned a Josh Hayes if I remember correctly....it don't give a shit but unless there's a Josh Hayes out there on the track it proves everyone makes mistakes. Pretty sure he meant Jacob Hayes unless I'm wrong and there really is a Josh Hayes out there.

Josh Hayes is an AMA Superbike rider. I doubt he was. That was the only one I heard though.

She doesn't have to be lying to be mistaken. It doesn't quite make sense that she would have the inside scoop on NBC Sports' budget decisions. It really doesn't make sense that NBC's Olympics budget, which is in the hundreds of millions, is shored up by giving Ralph Sheheen a few weeks off and using a higher profile network talent instead.

I do believe she is telling the truth insofar as she knows it, or believes it to be true.

It points to a larger question, which is, why is NBC cheesing out on the SX production? Obviously they inherited the whole shebang from Fox, crew included, found it to be less profitable than they liked, and are experimenting with ways to both trim the fat and change the direction of the programming.

I'm not convinced that characterization that they are skimping is accurate. Not asking Juliana to return is frankly just a sensible decision. She tried, but there was no remaining purpose to her presence, and it is hard to argue that the time she filled can't be better spent.

For those who don't watch a bunch of other motorsports, Leigh Diffey is NBC's former F1 announcer and current IndyCar announcer. He's also done a bunch of sports car stuff for them and substituted on their NASCAR coverage. He is absolutely "more famous" in the mainstream than Ralph Sheheen, and surely earns more money. Unless Diffey is doing NBC a pro bono favor, the explanation that Juliana offered doesn't make sense.

I think NBC thinks they are doing SX a favor by having Diffey drop in. They tend to like to tie their different motorsports properties together. Opinions of him vary. I think he's a pro and has a great voice. But I also think he can go to far with the constant over-enthusiasm, in that it sounds canned after a while. The same can certainly be said of Ralph's style.

A possible explanation that makes logical sense and covers Juliana's claim is that once the decision was made to use Diffey by higher-ups, Sheheen was told there was no money in the budget for him to be on the crew those weekends. They weren't going to do a three-man booth with two play-by-play announcers.

I agree with everything you wrote, though I *DO* think cutting Juliana - or ANY "Miss Supercross" type "Host" - who would be on the network's payroll, for more SPONSORED content, is a clear example of cost-cutting. If it were just a case of them not liking Juliana's performance in particular, they would have found another sexy chick to take her place. But they axed the entire position.

If Diffey is already on the NBC payroll then having him cover supercross will be less expensive to them than having Ralph. I.e. they extend Diffey's workload and ditch Ralph and the difference between the possible extra to Diffey and what Ralph would have cost goes towards their olympic budget.

I think Intensive is on to something. I noticed that NBC was doing a lot of cross promotion in their advertising this time around- I didn't have to sit through "Ugh, I broke my kickstarter, where do you get your parts?" a bajillion times during the broadcast. For crying out loud there were commercials for NBC's upcoming football games.

Not that I like commercials all that much, but I did notice that is wasn't the same six focus-grouped ads over and over this time. Bringing Diffey in for a bit may help them expand their audience reach some. I don't know how many people would watch something they normally don't just because of who the commentator is, but maybe..

The only cost savings, if any, as intensive pointed out would be do keep the team to 2 instead of 3- but who knows if Ralph's contract is a show-by-show or season deal? Did they have to pay him anyway? I doubt any of us know that for sure.

Might be semantics, but I'd say it was more of cost savings than cost cutting. I'm willing to bet that Feld/NBC Sports retains a marketing firm to research their show lineups (different than Nielssen type ratings), and Julianna's segments had to have consistently showed up in the negative column because she/they were pretty cringy. Hence she gets let go.

That being said, she did a prerecorded behind the scenes/pit report thing a couple of years ago that was actually good. Like someone said earlier, she seemed to be able to put the riders at ease when she was talking to them.

Maybe we can get a fat chick in yoga pants for the next Miss SX so that the average American woman isn't offended. The way things are going maybe Ralph will come back and double as Miss SX to keep NBC's costs down.

My pronouns are ......
I'm LGBTQ+XYZ

Mind you if it's a trans women in a dress and they look smoking hot, I'm ok with that.

It bothers me that you think we should have American non accent speaking commentators. I feel we should just have what’s best for our sport to help it grow. So if that’s a non-American commentators here and there with an accent who can possibly expand our network to get more viewers and more people interested why not accept it and go with it? The end goal for all of us Supercross/Motocross enthusiasts is to make our sport grow as much as possible! How awesome would it be to know that everyone actually qualifying can make a good living?

So you are telling me that the team we had at was the best commentating team available? If that is true, and you can substantiate it, then I will agree and retract my statement. But as far as I am concerned, this is an American series and I would like Ralph, Weege, Blair and Dianna Dahlgren, with a sprinkling of Ricky here and there. Thats the best team that will help the sport grow. Like i said, Leigh Giffey aint bad, but he isnt my first pick. Not even my top 5. But thats why this is a forum, everyone has their own opinions.

I can't be the only one that didn't notice the announcing at all. Diffey might have been good, I'm not sure because it never really caught my attention like it did with Ralph. The few moments I did hear from Diffey weren't very inspiring, nor did they get me excited about what's going on like Ralph did with him being so excitable even when it was something small that happened.

Obviously Ralph isn't perfect at his job, but to me he is way more exciting to listen to.

LOL!

Its funny, I see all these hot chicks on the news channels, talking about stocks, business, weather, politics, tech, even every sport now has a token female reporter. ITS NEVER A FAT or UNNATRACTIVE person. Its always a piece of eye candy or someone with a gender chip on their shoulder that got the position to appease some demographic. Youre telling me that no other unattractive man or woman is more capable of doing a better job? There is no equal opportunity, if that was the case we would have a much more diverse range of male and female commentators. Theres many social, political and economic reasons for all the choices. Not all of them are the right or fair reasons. So I can pitch for my dream team just like you or anyone else can, correct?
