KX80 didn’t have a rear disc brake until 88. The swing arm is also missing the disc guard tabs. Frame was green. What’s with the red fender? Shitty pictures. Those look like full sized wheels or am I crazy?

Maybe a frankenbike?

Rear wheel/disc is off something else, though.

The rear disc looks like a poor modification. The swing arm is 83/84. 83 had a front drum brake, 84 had a front disc.

It most likely started out as a 1984 KX80-E2. Macbeth is correct in all of his statements. The '84 was the first year for a front disc brake system, and the swingarm is the style that was used on the 1983 and 1984 KX80s. Starting in '85, the swingarm was a box style aluminum swingarm. And yes, rear disc brakes didn't show up until the '88 models. The red plastic was from the KDX80, which was offered in both lime green and red. The KX80s were so good in the early '80s that guys would ride them with the red KDX plastic because they didn't like lime green! The tank, fenders, and side panels were interchangeable between the two models, but you had to go aftermarket to find a radiator shroud, and I think they were only available in lime green or white, so the red plastic guys ran white radiator shrouds.

I'm betting that bike started out as an '84 model!

I had an 84 KX 80 and 125, both bikes were awesome. This definitely looks like an 84 to me - a roached out 84.

Nailed it. Saw a few "red" KX 80"s at Ponca in 84.....and it was an ugly red at that.

Total mess. Looks like the dropout was cut off and then they made a homemade one to try to fit the rear disk and welded it back on. Total mess. I say its an 84.

i know this is old thread but came across it on google today. yes 84 kx 80 in red was a real thing. believe dealer swapped plastic off of KDX. Buddies of mine had 2 of them. Also are probably the ones you seen in ponca that year.
