Cooksey, Straight to the Point MEC

History was also made as the 2019 MEC track was run in both directions. While riders seemed annoyed, I enjoyed watching them adapt and learn quickly. I could do without the Joker Lane and three starting gate locations, but I really hope Triple Crown events go both directions moving forward. Unfortunately, both Dean Wilson and Jordi Tixer had terrifying crashes during practice, and the specific jump had a funky lip on the landing. After Wilson’s accident, the track crew shaved the lip and made it much safer. I don’t believe going both directions had any effect on their crashes.

you cant have your cake and eat it too. i really hope we dont see tracks running both ways since jumps arent build to be jumped both ways. super unsafe

Some sections of the backwards track looked like it rode similar to 80/90's tracks with the way the jumps formed. It was a little different and interesting if you knew what you were looking at.

The statement of going both ways not having an effect on their crash is an odd statement depending on how you take it...

The odd lip was there because they had tried to setup the track so you do multiple versions of that line going each way. Multiple riders said that the peaked lip that was there for double-quad the normal direction and was what was interfering if you tried to go quad-double in the opposite direction. With the lip removed it was harder going the normal way and easier coming back.

Funny thing, most of the riders I asked said going in reverse was more fun even though it was sketchier. Once guys figured out the triple onto the backside of the dragon’s back when coming into the stadium in reverse, most liked it. When guys first started jumping onto the back of the dragon’s back though a lot of guys thought it was ridiculous, then they did it and realized it wasn’t all that bad.

Valid point but the jump was a table top designed for “on/off” jumping. Track builders had no idea it was even possible to quad. Once they realized it was dangerous they fixed it... Not perfect, but I was alright with the way it was handled.

"Most liked it." Those guys are insane. I cringed the first time the broadcast showed Malcolm land on the dragon's back. It just looked so sketchy at the speed they were carrying. Like one over/under jump was going to be disastrous for someone. After a couple laps of watching the field do the same thing, it looked perfectly normal. It just goes to show the talent level and huge balls everyone out there has.

Hitting the sand section at 70+ mph was also insane.

not a great idea, seeing as it took out a top ten guy.

this thread feels like a promotion of the mostly uninteresting cooksey content.

I'm not usually too hot on the Joker Lane, but that was the best one I can remember. The riders could see their competition in the last left before they merged... Plus the 3 walls and sand kept it very interesting.

I remember the layouts back in the Stew/Reed days, there were quite a few tracks with jump landings being the downside of a dragonsback. We just haven't had them in a while.

Hmmm. Not saying they did or could have known what was in store but after a few decades of building SX, wouldn't you think they would have it together by now? In fairness this was the first and hopefully last attempt in running the track in both directions. Still in 2019 there were also numerous crashes at the start of the 250s due to first and second turn layout issues.

I agree. It also seemed like waiting until the last lap was the best thing to do this year.

It's the thing to do every year. The fast guys usually get good starts. Last thing they want to do on a track that's as hard to pass as Vegas is take the Joker Lane early and put themselves behind a bunch of guys going a second a lap slower and they can't get around.

Unless you're in Eli's situation where you wanna take it a lap early to get some clear track and try and sprint to make the pass, or he drops it in the first corner and is stuck in traffic. If all goes to plan you do it late.

If you look back at my columns you will see I am borderline over the top crazy when safety is concerned, so I would say if I thought a glaring issue was ignored. Dean and Jordi’s crashes are an unfortunate part of the sport. If anything was dangerous it was the sand at 68mph and a Toyota parked within striking distance. IMO

I'd rather see 3 Mains or the Joker Lane done right over the track going backwards and high speed ski jumps into sand. I was on the edge of my seat when AC took the Joker on the last lap and he and Eli came together neck and neck going into that section!
