FROM MICKY'S PARTNER, BRENDA

Hi Folks,
Without getting into too many details, Micky was on his TT bike, zooming along on the bike trails in Yorba Linda. At the exact moment he removed his hand to make a handlebar adjustment he hit something and his front wheel went out from under him. We are forever grateful for his riding partners David Bailey and Steve Weidler who cared for him on the scene until the ambulance arrived. Micky has three frontal lobe contusions and two of the three contusions have stopped bleeding. He will remain in ICU until the third one stops bleeding and they feel he is OK to release from intensive care. There are many factors involved for that, but on the bright side, he is breathing on his own, with good vitals, and he does not (afterall) have any fractures in his spine. He has road rash on every limb and some broken ribs, which are clearly very minor things in the big picture. I have not seen him awake yet and am happy to report that he is resting deeply due to the amazing 24 hr team care he is receiving. His main trauma nurse’s own father had a similar accident training for Ironman. She’s a gift. It’s funny how this bike life keeps bringing more people together. Anyway, she has been very informative and caring. They only wake him to administer medications so that his brain stays calm. We hope he will be ready for an MRI soon but it needs to happen when he’s not as aggravated and confused when awake which is also to be expected this soon. So for now, we wait, we trust, and we believe.
I’m speaking on behalf of Micky and his family when I say we thank you for all the love and concern. I’m not sure how it’s possible to feel so loved and so heartbroken at the same time, but that’s the case indeed. Will post more updates soon. Please expect to see a fundraiser page once I know more about what the long haul looks like. By the way, I have never been so happy to hear him snore! ❤️
A big thanks for the update bigfoot...and Brenda! It confirms my worst worries and gives a glimmer of hope at the same time. I didn't know Micky that well and I haven't talked to him in more than 30 years but I raced with him quite a bit at Saddleback, OCIR, The Dunes (where I crashed infront of him in the second turn and he cracked his center cases on my bike...LOL) Golden State Series races etc. and he always seemed like a quiet, humble bad-ass as he moved through the So cal ranks. In fact I raced with Steve too. I remember him griding cylinders out of the back of Power Pro's exhaust back in the 80's...I also believe I recently (a year or 2 ago) met Steve's wife while she was filming a Tom White memorial video. Anyway, I remember Steve as a solid guy to be by Micky's side for such a traumatic event. News like this really bums me out. I just hold on to the thought that mxer's are a different breed when it comes to overcoming traumatic injuries and making a 100% recovery! You've got this Mic!

UPDATE FROM MICKY'S PARTNER BRENDA
10/13/19 4:00 PT

Micky is breathing on his own, sitting up on his own, but the hospital is still keeping him very sedated so that he doesn't get agitated.

It often happens with head injuries that when the patient awakes, the confusion triggers their fight or flight response.

So bummed at Mickey getting hurt. Cycling seems like such an accident waiting to happen to me...with so little protective gear that any fall has the potential of jacking you up seriously. And no matter what anybody says...NOBODY sees cycle riders at all. I have always been a huge fan, and pray for his quick & complete recovery.

ANOTHER UPDATE FROM MICKY'S PARTNER BRENDA
10/13/19 5:30 pm PT

Ok Folks, let’s start this post off with a fresh reminder that time is on our side. Micky needs time. He needs rest. His sweet friend Sheri made it clear when she said the term “Rest and Renewal”

Micky is in the REST phase ...and we will get to the renewal phase!!
So with all that said, first a massive Thank you all for the outpouring of love and care for Micky ❤️❤️
As for an update, we visited with Micky this morning and I’d like to say that all things considered he is doing good.
They have him sedated because he just needs to rest. This is somewhat “text book” for them even if it’s tough for all of us. Micky’s most dangerous injury is a Subarachnoid bleed ...but it’s very tiny and it’s stable.
Micky has
No brain swelling
No skull fractures
No mid line shift /meaning his brain is as centered in his skull as yours and mine 💪💪

A next step protocol is switching psych meds another great sign denoting the next phase of treatment. According to the nurse today, he has all very normal levels of basically every stat for injury ..
His good health is a key factor for recovery ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Please keep sending all the love and light his way ...more soon ❤️☺️

In our thoughts. Heal fast. Was always a huge fan and became an even bigger fan when he let this 12 year old at the time sit on his Honda in the 80s before his race.

ANOTHER UPDATE FROM MICKY'S PARTNER BRENDA
10/14/19 8:30 pm PT

Hi there Folks,
Wow, what can I say... today was such a big day for all of us!! 💫
To walk alone into ICU and to unexpectedly see Micky awake and call out my name was one of the most impactful moments in my life. ✨ Some of his family were able to visit soon after and I’m so glad to report that he knows who we all are and he’s engaging with us as best as he can. We are all so relieved! PT came in while I was there and we helped him walk on his is own in one session! 💪 (there’s the champion mindset!) And to paint a clearer picture for you, he is eating and drinking on his own too, along with many other details that just seem like absolute miracles right about now. Regarding a proper update, Micky is definitely improving, but his condition is still considered “critical”... he has some issues with time and what exactly happened and certainly has trouble finding the right words. All to be expected, considering that he just woke up. He will have a journey ahead, but what we have experienced today is the most excellent news.
Thank you SO MUCH for all the love and prayers and good vibes. Please keep it coming for the road ahead ... we love you all ❤️
We also have to give a massive high five to his ICU care team, they have been excellent. I think I’ve buried my face in their arms on more than one occasion.
Oh and a couple more things, I brought him ice cream this afternoon (nurse’s suggestion) and he was the happiest guy ever. I also showed him some posts/videos of people sending him get well wishes and riding for him and I could tell that he absolutely loved it. Next time we will do that with his reading glasses 😉
More soon .... ❤️

UPDATE FROM BRENDA, 10/15/19 6:30 pm PT

Guess who is out of ICU!
Micky was moved to the neuro unit here at the hospital this afternoon and he was finally able to get his MRI. We are officially in the renewal phase! He has come so far since waking up yesterday. He’s been piecing things together more and more with each conversation, has cracked some funny jokes, and even asked for a beer! 😉
We are very well aware of the fact that this is only the beginning and that he has a long way to go. The recovery for his brain is going to take time. The next phase is expected to include rounds of speech, physical and occupational therapy and as you can imagine, Micky is ready to get on with it! And so are we! 👊👊 #gomicky #lovewins ❤️

Great to hear he's doing better. I'm curious what kind of helmet he was wearing? Those little road cycling helmets don't seem like they would do much because the coverage only seems to be on top of the head.

Great news. Micky is one of my all time favorite riders.
