300k all in including bikes, flights, techs etc? Yea, wouldn’t doubt it. Those costs are shared between teams and national orgs I would think

I bet it's at least that. But nobody wants to hear the costs. "It's for national pride". Says dudes on the internet, not footing the bills. Same dudes complaining about teams going belly up because there's not enough money in the sport, no doubt.

I hope for the sake of the event its not true. How long are the US teams going to stump up that kind of cash with no return?

I also wonder if the way the US do it could be contributing to that cost. I've never been but i've heard alot about the sheer number of team USA hangers on that are there. Are they all necessary? Could they scale it back to a manager, a few mechanics, a few riders? I'm not sure how viable that is but it seems like that amount of cash cant be sustainable forever. Has to be especially hard to deal with when the riders keep coming back injured aswell

I'd bet he's underselling it if anything.

I thought I had read on here or maybe somewhere else that it was around $15 grand to crate a bike & ship it over seas to the race. Each of our USA guys had two bikes. That’s $90,000 right there

What did Estonia spend to take 4th? Add $90,000 to that for shipping and that's the number. Anything more was unnecessary.

Read that as well. Obviously USA is usually going a further distance than most other teams, but have heard they go with about 5x the stuff and staff than any other team.

I doubt any team who travelled to Red Bud spent anywhere near that last year. Yes it’s not a cheap trip, but they spend far more than they have to at this race.

Sounds a bit low to me as well. Generous estimate.

I didn't know Team USA was a government agency. Seems to me they could get a better deal. NY to Western Europe for 40ft container is about $2k.

I doubt DeCoster was quoting the travel costs of any entourage members. Most are likely paying their own way because there’s no way a team would pay for that expense. If the riders want to pay for friends to attend thats own them not the team.

I agree, I think people hear stuff on podcasts and jump to their own conclusions believing they are correct

I’m guessing that even if they did foot the bill for everyone to attend that the amount spent on that is a fraction of what is spent to get the necessary equipment there.

I’m also guessing that DeCoster is including the amount it costs for Husky to have four extra race bikes ready for the end of September which I’m sure isn’t cheap.

300k is ridicoulus. No wonder they complain about this event if they spend that much coming here. 90k for shipping six bikes? Not a chance. If they pay that much for some shipping, they most likely got scammed to all hell.

The first question anyone should ask after that quote from Roger is "How the fuck is it possible that you spend 300k on a one off event"!

I'm sorry but that is just an outrageous amount of money. If that sum is true (which i doubt), heads should roll and some sort of budget manager should be hired.

If it costs $300k for the US to go to 1 overseas race, it really makes you scratch your head at the MXGP teams’ budgets since their series crosses continents multiple times in a season.

Standing Construct must’ve spent 1.8M on flyways alone

Mxon format change: come to north america more than once every 10 years.

300k to go year after year while europeans pay for a semi and a train ride.

USA is always footing the bill for Europeans reindeer games.

Nothing about your post makes sense. USA has held the MXdN 3 times in the last 12 years.

300k budget is totally ridiculous and a completely unnecessary spend. No one else is spending even close to that figure. Even when everyone travelled to Red Bud last year.

Would be nice if the US government got behind this event and assisted financially? Sounds like France does. Doesn't the government have a program for olympic athletes?

No since 1987, its been held in the USA 4 times. The rest are in europe. Its not fair we constantly foot the big bills.

Since Youthstream took over in 2004 it’s been in the US 3 times in 15 years. Which is often enough, maybe they should move the event around the world a bit more, but the vast majority of the competing nations are European and the European promoters do a fantastic job of the event, with massive crowds. So it’s not hard to understand why the race is in Europe most of the time. Team USA can help themselves by not literally burning money. There’s people who have done an entire GP season including 6 flyaways for the kind of money they’ve spent on one weekend of racing.
