Me personally I don't care that other sports have permanent numbers or that "Casual" fans might not know who's who. I think earned numbers were awesome, brutally honest, and unique to our sport. The lower the number, the more of a badass they were last year. Plain and simple. And the riders have their names on the back of their jerseys anyway, it was never that big of a deal to figure out who was wearing what # this year. The hardcore fans knew beforehand because they watched last year, and the "Casual" fans (that everyone seems so anxious to impress) won't remember or care anyway. Plus permanent #'s aren't permanent anyway. #2 That's McGrath !, wrong, Oh it's Villopoto now I forgot, nope, wrong.... Same with numbers 3, 4, 5, 7, 14, 15, 18, 19, 20 etc. They change all the time anyway, might as well have them mean something. We can figure out who's who, we're like smart and shit Laughing

Here is a dose of honesty. All you "old school" guys need to just get the hell over it. I've been wandering around these vital streets for a few years now, and I see this damn debate too much. Along with the 2 stroke debate, which I will not touch. I watched moto as a kid back in the early 90's. Maybe it was my stupid kid brain, but I did not get the number situation back then. I took a hiatus from watching and missed the whole RC4 era, came back in 2012 when my kids showed interest and to my surprise, the numbers made more sense to me. Just my 2 cents but, it's easier and I like knowing my favorite riders will have the same number.

Flame on.

You don't get a number system where riders are awarded a number, 1-100 based on the amount of points they earn?

It's actually cool to see what a rider EARNS. But people today are lazy, and just want instant satisfaction. God forbid anyone put a little thought into it and figure out that number 6 in 2020 is so and so. Is it really that hard to figure out that that guy out front in Fox gear on a Honda is Kenny Roczen?

It was your stupid kid brain yes and feel free to enlighten us with a more rewarding and fascinating topic for discussion seeing as you have been "wandering around these vital streets for a few years...". I would ask that of any of the other posters who bemoan a topic which they think has been done to death.

As to this topic, bring back the earned numbers - it MEANS something. Seeing champions in other national and world championships parade their marketing number is pathetic and an insult to the rest of the team who worked their ass off for their rider. Whether the number is 1 or higher wear it with pride or as an inspiration to earn better next year.

Pure ignorance on my part here, but is there any other sport that does numbers the way you would prefer?

No idea, you can check if you like. But if I came across a sport I knew little about it would be a quick and helpful guide if the numbering system made sense i.e competitor with number 1 on his back - likely to be the champ, guy with number 4 on his back - dude came close to making the championship podium and not far away from being the champ.

I was curious about it so I did the numbers.

For 2020, number 6 would be Zach Osborne and Roczen would be number 4.

This Kid is alright. (Shout out to The Who!)

I'm 56.
I'm pretty familiar with most things "old school"...from Maicos and CZs with coffin-tanks or AJSs with funky forks...
23" front wheels to 20" front wheels...
Hell, I remember four-strokes at motocross races in the '60s...
And ya know what-else I know?
The "Career Number" system works.

Oh, and...hey, kid?
You be careful out there in The Dunes!

Thank God the permanent numbers don't change from year to year, imagine how confusing that would be. Go RC4 !!

I agree. In my opinion half the reason why this sport never progresses is because you have people like thebigloser stuck in the 1980s thinking just because they did something a certain way back then, than it is clearly the best way to do it now.

So I express my opinion that I enjoy seeing what a rider earned, and you translate that as being stuck in the 80s thinking my way is best?

Well, you're right, I do think my way is best. You're wrong about the loser part, but the 80s was a golden era of motocross where factories had multiple riders, all super talented and capable of winning. One week, it was Barnett, the next Bailey, then maybe Ward, or Johnson, or Hannah, or O'Mara, or Lechein. Those guys wore what they earned, raced the mxon when asked, and didn't bitch about schedules or not getting paid to race when they were representing their country. I think we should go back to that, and I'm unapologetic about it.

I say keep it the way it is, except raise the number of points per year required to keep your career number. Nothing against Chisolm, but... it is weird to see such a low number consistently finish so far back.
Yup. I think top 20 # should require you to finish in the top 20 overall points on a yearly basis to keep it.

Also, the 250 regional SX points counting as much as 450 points is wack. Those points should be multiplied by .75 or something

Took exactly 3 brain cells to learn the riders earned number for 30yrs at the season opener. Sadly americans no longer have 3 brain cells to spare for this cause. Casual fans no longer exist. 250sx and 450sx only guys should run what they earned with outdoors combined. Just my opinion of course.

What number do you think of when you see these names?

Bob Hannah
Marty Smith
Roger DeCoster
Jeff Ward
Rick Johnson
Ron Lechein
Danny Chandler
Johnny O'Mara

Under the original 'run what you earn' system, the number you associate with a rider will correspond to a particular year in the rider's career. If you see O'Mara on the 101 bike----then you think "Mugen". If you see Bob Hannah running the #100, then you think "goddammit Tripes!" 😆

Guaranteed multi-year contracts, first class flights, semi-trucks with "personal pod layout", and permanemt career numbers for non-champions....

They call it progress.....
I call it 🐴💩

Going into 2020, with Seely retiring and giving up his number, there's going to be 27 riders with career numbers. That leaves 72 numbers that you'll have to learn anyway.

What's learning 27 more?

I personally like it when riders get new numbers.

I do get the branding thing but to be honest how many of the guys actually capitalize on it? It would be a different story if they were allowed to sell their merchandise at the races but that's a no go.

Sure, the hardcore fan will visit the riders websites and order a few things but that's pocket change. How many more T-shirts and hats could they sell at the SX/MX races if they were allowed?

In my opinion, the branding thing in this sport is useless. At least until they're allowed to sell their stuff at the races.

I'm indifferent to an opinion either way. For years, everyone had a different number every year. Didn't take long to know who was what number. I also see the marketing side of having career numbers. I'm good either way.

I'm big time against career numbers. The casual fan sees 94 and thinks he's slower than 4, which isn't exactly the case.
Why would they think that? I see this argument all the time but I don’t understand it.

Does anyone rock up to a stick & ball sport of any kind and assume that the players with the lowest numbers are the best ones?

Do you actually think that “earning” a number is high on the list of things that motivate a professional rider to do better?

If your answer is yes, you are implying that certain riders will start performing better for no reason other than changing the number system...

I'm about as far away from being a "snowflake" as you can get but feel free to call me what you like. I respect old school guys, but just because something was done in the past, and it's what a certain generation grew up knowing, doesn't mean it's the better way. I could list a million examples, but unlike most of you, I assume you all have a certain level of intelligence. I used my stupid kid brain example because it's relevant to the casual fan. I wasn't able to watch religiously back then, and every time I tuned in, I was confused. The only guy I ever recognized was MC. I specifically remember seeing Emig as number 2, and then number 3. Also back then I was a pretty big NASCAR fan, so that drove my numbering understanding. People don't like being told to get over it, but it's what they need to do most of the time. Feel free to reminisce about the old numbering system and how much you liked it, but you need to accept that it's not going back.

I read on Vital that factories prefer single-digit numbers. If true, then case closed. Earn it...

I don't get why simple conversations like this need to get personal so fast.

Theprizefighter likes an earned number system and the stories linked to the numbers/years, I like career number system and the stories behind why some choose random numbers plus the consistency.

Neither of us is 100% right or wrong, and I'd still gladly discuss it more with him over beers.

I love threads like this and the discussion it can generate but heck the rate things turn into personal attacks is childish and kills it.

I just don’t see the upside to the old system, not that there is much upside to the current system but it does allow the riders to build a brand around their number. Guys like AC and Tomac have both taken advantage of this and sell merchandise for their fans. Chad Reed named his team after his number and it became a household name. Could he have named it anything else? Yeah, he could have but I’m guessing TwoTwo was a lot more personal for him and everyone knew it was his team because of the name.

Just my opinion, I think they should keep it the way it is but if they feel inclined to change it I’d say go to the MXGP system where you can choose whatever you want as long as it’s not taken, with the exception being number one of course. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter and I wouldn’t care if they went back to the old system but I just don’t see any reason to aside from nostalgia.

I'm big time against career numbers. The casual fan sees 94 and thinks he's slower than 4, which isn't exactly the case.

Every other large form of Motorsport uses permanent number systems, so it’s kind of hard to say any newcomer fan would think that if they are a motorsports fan in general. NASCAR, F1, MotoGP, Superbike, etc all have permanent number systems.

I understand your point, but when I say, casual fan, I'm talking about the guy or gal who knows very little about the sports and just goes to an event for entertainment. I think in motor sports, the perception is that lower numbers equal faster racers. I mean, when someone sees the big number 1, they think that guy is the best.
Why should we change what works for casual fans who dont have a clue and make assumptions?

Theprizefighter likes an earned number system and the stories linked to the numbers/years, I like career number system and the stories behind why some choose random numbers plus the consistency.

Neither of us is 100% right or wrong, and I'd still gladly discuss it more with him over beers.

I love threads like this and the discussion it can generate but heck the rate things turn into personal attacks is childish and kills it.
I'll admit that it's hard to imagine RC as anything but number 4 (though he sure did wear that number 1 a lot), or Reed as anything but 22. I still see Stewart as 259, and not 7. I never thought of Seely as 14, for me, it's still Windham. 222 is the iconic Cairoli; 72, Everts, etc. But I remember loving to see what the new year would bring with the numbers. So cool and fun.

I would go to all permanent numbers, but you have to earn the right to run a single or double digit number. I'd say national title for single digit, and top 20 in national (or top 10 in regional SX) for double digits.
