There were times last year where he was as fast on the 250 as the 450 class. I was hoping he would be a factor in the championship, what’s the deal 🤷‍♂️

Injuries and the YZ 450 would be the biggest factors I’d say. I was definitely looking forward to seeing him shred the 450.

Confident, agressive small bike riders often take a while to get used to the big bikes. He'll come around.

As with Ferris,he wanted to change tje triple clamp off set as he didnt feel safe pushing it,but the brains trust at Yamaha said noooo

This seems to be a common theme at yamaha, you'd think with the money they are putting in they'd listen to their riders

The 450 is a different animal than the 250. Different power delivery and different handling. Not many riders can ride that brand 450 with out lots of modifications to it.

What a difference a year makes. Double champion in SX & MX on the 250, getting ready to sign a big dollar deal for the 450 and represent USA at the MXDN. Probably making more money in 1 year than the rest of your life combined up to that point.

Then.......

Despite all of his legitimate excuses he should still be doing better. It`s not going in the right direction.

Exactly this. People love to attempt to equate lap times between 450s and 250s and act like they matter at all. It's so fucking annoying. There is no similarity whatsoever.

it's all conjecture on our part, but I'll throw my hat in the ring. I actual own a YZ450F (and like it), but I could probably relate to the speed those guys are going about as much if I were riding a Hodaka Super Rat.

I am going to guess that the YZ450F (at Plessi and Barcia's speed) has a fairly narrow setup window. I would also speculate that some combination in team testing (this could be a combination of riders that simply suck at testing, poor communication between the team and riders, or lack of leadership) and inherent characteristics of that bike are just converging to result in some really, really off weeks at the races.

Again, all speculation, but they seem to really struggle with setup this year (and Reed's comments lead me to believe that there is some truth to their issues w/setup).

I actually think the KX450F (at Tomac's level) probably has a somewhat narrow window as well; Eli simply will not ride out of his zone like RC or RV would to make up for lack of comfort.

my .02...

The "narrow setup window" was actually something Weston Peick commented on after JGR went to Suzuki. He said it was easier to be around the right spot race to race with the Suzuki. Pretty sure he said it in an interview with Matthes.

Regarding AP, his heel injury was pretty bad. I think those are very difficult injuries to come back from at the best of times (off-season) let alone coming in mid-season. At this point I think we have to kind of give him a pass on his rookie 450 season but there's going to be some pressure to perform in 2020.
