As far as a mini goes, any Supermini Suzuki built by R&D during the 80's.
125, Stew's 02 KX 125 blasting around Unadilla sounded so strong, and healthy. Man he pissed Reed off that day....
RC's RM 250 had a sound all it's own. Really sounded great wound tight.....
And lastly, an HRC works 500 from 84, or 85 at a mere idle was quite intimidating.
The answer to the OP question is a works Honda 500.

But nothing beats the rong pong pong pong idle and buzzsaw sound of the CR 500. I dont think even the KX500 sounded as good.

You can't have a conversation about best sounding bikes without this. I was fortunate to be able to hear it first hand at a Motion Pro open house years ago before the S.F. supercross.
One day I got passed by a kx 250f with a two brothers exhaust. It was my first weekend on a track. It scared the shit out of me ; yet I wanted that sound.
In use, as an MXer, it would have to go down at least a tiny bit low in its rev range, as against the pre singles only 125 GP Road Race class. So, the aural range might have been quite the thing.
Probably the best sound track I've found is from my '97 World 500 MX Championships DVD.
It had the KX and CR500s used by many (some CRs sleeved down to the 400 /430 region) , the booming Husaberg and Husky 4ts of Smets and Martens, the smaller 360/380 KTMs of Nichol, King and Parker, and, the amazing, 'Billet Everything", YZM400s. Now those, the YZM400 Works bikes, had an incredible sound, not remotely matched by the modern 450 4ts to come, or of today.
I do have a love of Bengt Abergs Halman/Enqvist TT, and CCMs. The 3 valve engine Aberg used a bit had a neat, different sound to it, over the std 2 valver. There's a few GP videos on You Tube that give you brief aural symphonies of both of them, generally with Bob Wright on the CCM.
The noise of the Hercules / Sachs Rotary powered Dirt Bikes is quite unique.
The incredible variety of Road Race engine types through the late 50s, to the end of the 60s, when rules were tightened up, made for some amazing sounds and engineering.
keep it up guys i enjoy read it !
