I’ve only been observing Motocross for a couple years now, but I can never recall Mr. Tomac forcing a pass, block-passing or going aggressively inside on anyone... ? His standard M.O is to blast around you on the outside, like no other rider I’ve ever seen... quite astounding actually... think he actually mentioned, with a grin, in the post-race interview, his passion to rail the outside.....it’s a thing of beauty to witness, is it not ?

I completely agree. When it comes to going to the outside in motor sports, Eli is right up there with this legend.

Props to Anderson for throwing dirt in his face for most of the moto. I imagine Eli was about running out of tear-offs, so he needed to force that pass a bit.
2nd moto lines usually open up to a lot more outside passes. Classic Timmy Ferry style!

In the tradition of Magoo, yes.
& Mark Barnett - he didn't care much for shutting off the throttle.

Early Villopoto was awesome to watch for different line choice...but you just can’t top ‘Magoo’

His suspension looks really dialed. Seems to be a bit softer. Similar to the European style people talked about during the MXdN in comparison to typical stiffer U.S setups. With maybe an exception to Roczen.

Like all great champions of the sport, he has created something. He has his "signature".

He is definitely amazing to watch.

I still think about the times in the 250 class when Baggett would go into “El Chupacabra” mode halfway through motos. That was very similar to Tomac’s style of absolutely railing outside lines. It was amazing to watch.

Amazing cornering technique and it's mind blowing how hard he rail the outsides of corners.

With Mammoth happening this past week it reminds me of how incredible it was watching Tomac check out from the Supermini field the one year I raced the event. It was in '07 and it was when he would wear that all white TLD on American Suzuki. I remember watching him land off the finish and rail that big sweeper on a supermini probably 4th gear WFO and won by like 40 seconds (I have a bad memory, maybe exaggerating), but when I watched him that day I knew he would go on to be the dominant champion he has been (outdoors, atleast).

2017 Southwick. Downhill inside pass on Roczen, wide over a jump with foot off the peg from 10 bike lengths back.
Its on you tube but I don't know how to post it at 4:30 am on my cell phone.

Not a huge Tomac guy but his first 5 motos before the Lakewood crash were the fastest I've seen anyone go on a bike besides some of Herlings and JS7s rides.

That's why Roczen/Tomac battles are the best. Both clean riders, racing hard but no dirty stuff

His style is great, I agree. I think it's more his mentality that pushes him to take the long way around and still make the pass. It's a testament to his raw speed but also demonstrates that you don't have to always get aggressive to make every pass. Sure, there's a time and place for making things happen on the inside but Tomac can't help himself when the opportunity to rail the outside around someone presents itself. You can almost see him grinning under his helmet.

Tomac is a lot like Hannah, he just pounds it through! Very fun to watch.

I remember Carmichael doing the same thing to Stewart too.

I think you mean 2016 Southwick. Kenny was on a Suzuki and owning the outdoors. Southwick was one of the first times that year where anyone had anything for Ken...and it was awesome.

He had one of those outside passes about 10 mins in and again before the 11 min mark... this was the one where he was sending it up the uphill like a double into a right hander right?

I saw RC, RV, and occasionally Stew do the same thing regularly without all of the inconsistency.

His strength. Two repaired shoulders, and he looks like a linebacker who could rip most other racers in half.

Not remarkable, but I love his hamfisted throttle hand.

Likes to bunnyhop obstacles, and he is great at it.
