I am forced to ride alone alot , whether it be single track or a local practice mx club track .
I know this dosent apply to all , but some may have some ideas , as I'm getting older "only 25" I start to think about the what ifs . Especially with a wife and kids now . And I work rotating shift work and normally have no one to ride eith . So I'd like to keep my phone strapped to me incase of the event . Where do you strap yours ?

Get one of those upper arm strap-pouches that people use for running.

In a hydro pack(if I use one)and always use a smart watch now even when I have my phone. I can be pretty mangled, and as long as I can still talk It will work for an emergency. Also, it is still cheaper than a phone if it does get damaged.

I use to have an ICE ( in case of emergency ) sticker on the side of my helmet and in my van window.
It had emergency contact details and any meds etc that might be important to emergency services.
To me , in the UK , a phone would be a waste if I was unconscious and there are always marshals around , I appreciate it might be different in the US , trail riding etc, a phone would be important so a Bluetooth ear and mouth piece would be good with the phone stored somewhere safe on the bike?

Very good thread.
Always in camel/hydro bag for trail riding. But if I ride without it or alone on an MX track (most of the time riding MX with someone), i usually have it attached to that velcro strap holding those soft pads inside the pants. When I buy a pair of new pants, I always take those pads out, bcs I don't like them. I have a little pouch for the phone and my wife just saw the velcro stripe to it which I attach to that velcro on the pants. I have it a little longer so I don't have it stuck from the outside of the thigh but rather center/inside (like you usually have your phone inside your pocket wearing jeans) So far no issues, but I can imagine if seriously injured it can be a problem taking the phone out.
Also worth to mention, that I wear my MX pants a little looser than tight, so for those who wear these skinny/stretchy pants this method can be an issue.

If i were to carry a cell phone on me whilst riding I would want it on my chest or stomach area. It must be easy to reach in the unfortunate event of going down hard.

I once broke my femur, there were only two of us at the practice track at the time and I could barely move. Another time I dislocated my shoulder and broke my collarbone at the same track and would hate to try and get a bag off my back to get to a phone.

The ideal is always to ride with someone but I understand and know from experience that it is not always possible, so plan for the worst.

1. Carry a phone within easy reach
2. Let family or a friend know where and when you will be riding and arrange that if they have not heard from you at an agreed upon time then they should come looking for you.
3. Carry a couple of pencil flares, trust me, you will need them when you know people are looking.

I carry it in my tool-bag (belt-type). There are side pouches on it that’re perfect for my phone, keys, wallet...etc.

Might be a good idea to share GPS location from your phone. When you stop moving, they will see that and can react accordingly + they know where to look for you.

I shove mine in my boot. This probably won’t work if you wear knee braces.

I can’t remember the manufacturer. But they make a seat cover with a pouch to zip your phone inside of. I think I remember seeing it on the bike of that megsbraaap girl on YouTube.

Nithrone Seat covers but aint a good idea having the phone on the bike. I mean, go tumbling and you break something and then need to crawl to the bike to retrieve the phone..not good.

It may not be cool looking but my wife has a really cool LL Bean small hiking hip/fanny pack that fits my phone and multi tool in it. It’s secure enough for moto and mtn biking and I don’t even notice it’s there. There are better mtn biking hip packs too and they are like $15-$20. Don’t forget to wash the sand and mud out of it after you “borrow” it tho haha

The bulk of my riding is trail so I bought a pair of MSR off road pants. Two decent size pockets that zipper close. Seal the phone in a Ziploc bag and I never even notice it's there. Got the pants pretty cheap on clearance from RMATV.

Camelback fanny pack and phone in an old goggle case wrapped like a kids first tooth under the pillow. Super hack but been doing it for few years with no issues.

When my kids where little sometimes they would come with me, I guess I was supposed to be watching them. I would instruct them if I fall down and do not get back up to push this button on the phone and call their mom. I keep my phone now on my tailgate in my shoe. That won't help much if I can't get back to the truck.

Love my Apple Watch. You take a hard spill it will say "Looks like you've taken a hard fall" then you have the option for emergency SOS or "I've fallen but I'm ok." If you choose SOS it'll contact EMS as well as the emergency contacts in your phone(wife, etc), and let them know you've fallen and your GPS location. If you don't respond within a minute(I think), it'll automatically do emergency SOS, so help will automatically be contacted and given your location should you be unconscious. Get the cellular version and you won't need to carry a phone. Only $10/mo added to your phone bill. In addition to that you get all the heart rate and activity tracking as well.

I know a guy that cut out a little pocket in the foam of his Pro Taper pad (cross bar-less type). Dropped the phone in there and then put the velcro cover over it. Fit perfect.

This was a few years back and some of the newer, larger phones may not fit. He had an iPhone if i remember.

I keep mine in my Ogio hydration pack when riding offroad. There is a nice fleece-lined pocket pouch made for valuables and electronics. At the MX track i just keep the phone in my truck

Sounds like a winner right there.

What happens if you have a broken leg or even worse..a back or neck injury and the bike with the phone are 10 meters away?

Better prepared if the phone were on your person.

Get a cheap armband phone case and mount it on your bar pad or if you don't want to chance taking a phone to the chin you can wrap it around your upper fork tube behind the number plate like a transponder. This works great for me. It's a simple velcro on/off installation.

Klim Mohave pants have a zipper pocket. Put the phone in a zip lock baggie, put it in the pocket.

I do carry a hydro back, but its minimal, and doesn't have a pocket big enough for the phone.

Side note, I carry a phone because I always track my rides with Strava. Then create segments on some of the more popular dirt bike trails and compare them to my buddies (Strava is a running/cycling/mountain biking app...so only use it on dirt bike ONLY trails...otherwise, you'll piss off the mountain bikers and trail runners when you blow their segment times out of the water).
