Powerband racing just posted a pic of what I assume is the new cone valve/trax combo, rebranded as WP Pro Components.Anyone have details on them? If so, what exactly has changed from the black version of the cone valves (aside from coating color)?

those pictured are the Cone Valve AER fork, as far as changes I believe the only changes for the forks are settings, branding and colours. As for the shock, there are some huge updates, I have been told that there is no longer a trax mechanism but a dual adjust high/low speed rebound as seen on the shock in the second pic posted. Id expect more info from WP shortly...

The Trax system has been redesigned per se, instead of being in the base of the clevis, my understanding is it’s now a sleeve inside the shaft but outside of the rebound needle, with a spring at the top that allows it to completely open the rebound circuit in a way like the old system. But this new version is adjustable through a clicker on the clevis which allows you to fully open, close or tune in between for the system. That’s how it was explained to me...hopefully I can stop by there soon and get a better look at it for a video.

Pricing to be revealed soon. I wonder if it’s going to impact the previous CV and Trax values, and how much?

Somebody that knows can correct me but i don't think there is any changes to the CV forks besides the colors so the fork pricing should stay stable. But the old Trax shock will probably go down in value. Those who are looking at getting Trax shocks on the used market will probably find good deals!

I thought it read longer length and more stroke.

Price of Conevalve/Trax been same for long time and matched KYB B-kit stuff here in EU. 3000€ forks and 2000€ for shock. Öhlins been just below those numbers but just couple hundreds. Showa A-kit is much more and only some sets available.
New desing doesnt cost WP more so new sets should follow same range.

The outer coating is hard chrome now, not DLC. I believe I heard some minor internal changes.

The big conversion is the shock with the new Trax mechanism that’s adjustable.

No more BLING?
As little as they do in real life, the fancy coatings are a must have on a top level suspension. Who would want a Showa A-Kit if it had gold upper tubes and chrome lowers? the coatings is what we all (I assume) drool over.
Strange move on WP's part imo.

The chrome lower is what they use on their 52mm works fork.

As far as I’m aware, DLC won’t adhere to aluminum (if I’m wrong, someone please correct me) and the 52mm use aluminum lowers instead of steel.

The lowers still have a darker tint to them vs regular chrome it’s a grayish color. It still looks trick imo.

So does this mean that the new 48mm uses aluminium lowers also?

Nice to see them finally selling the shock with a bladder...considering that's what their teams have been using for a few years now.

Ive heard the hard chrome has less stiction than DLC, so I’d assume it’s a performance benefit.

But I 100% agree I like the DLC or TiNi coated look all day ever chrome.

On the site it says available mid May at WP centers, so hopefully some test review info coming soon!

Not true, chrome will generally have less stiction then Tin depending on finish but not DLC

I am aware of that but that's because TiN/dlc is not an option on the aluminum tubes. 48mm CV lower tubes were steel so far, unless that is going to change with the new CV's. I wouldn't count on that though, as aluminum lower tubes on 52mm's wear out VERY fast in comparison to steel counterparts.

You can DLC aluminum but the process changes slightly.

Some info about coatings to clear things up:

You can DLC (or TiN) aluminum, but it happens at such a high temperature that would kill the temper of the aluminum and you'd lose a bunch of strength. That's why you don't see much DLC coated aluminum, certainly nothing structural.

In order of higher to lower friction (stiction if you will):
Hard chrome, TiN, DLC, with a pretty big difference between TiN and DLC. Not so much between chrome and TiN.

While DLC will be lower friction than hard chrome, one a shock it doesn't matter all that much since there are hardly any side loads on the shaft. The swingarm takes all the side loads applied to the bike and the shock is mounted on spherical bearings so it really can't take any off-axis loading.

The side loads on a fork can be huge and coatings make a MUCH greater difference on a fork than on a shock.

All that said, the only reason I could see them moving from DLC to hard chrome on the shock shaft is cost reduction. But for a manufacturer DLC coating a shock shaft isn't that expensive... Seems like an odd move. Unless the shock shaft is aluminum?
