This is a moral/philosophical question.

You are standing by the train tracks. You see 10 year old Jessica is trapped in the tracks as a train with 500 passengers is coming toward her. You can't reach her in time to free her before the train hits her. You notice a lever in front of you that will switch the train to a different track but that track leads to a bridge that is out.

Do you do nothing...sacrifice Jessica for the 500?

What if Hitler was on that train?

What if Jessica was your daughter?

No right or wrong answers...just answers based on perspective.

I let god decide.
What if God decided to put you near that handle so YOU could decide?

Big flood coming. Cops go house to house telling everyone to evacuate. One old man refuses to go. Says God will protect him. Water rises...rescuers come in a boat, "Get in the boat old man". "Nope, God will protect me". Water rises..old man on his roof. Helicopter comes..."grab the rope we will save you". "No sir, God will save me". The old man drowns.

He gets to heaven and demands to see God. They bring him to the "Man". He yells, "I trusted in you and you let me die".God says, "I sent a car, a boat, a helicopter...what the fuck more could I do"?

What if god isnt real. And Jessica dying is natural selection taking its course.

Jessica’s parents failed her. Not something the passengers on the train should be punished for.

I dont care if Hitler is on the train. Had he won WW2 history would view him completely differently. The winners get to play the “good guys” when they write history books.

Lol...I had a philosophy professor pose that question to the class. The question can be twisted. The train is headed for the downed bridge..the switch can save them but kills trapped Jessica. Now what do you do?

I'm gonna go ahead and consider you as an "outlier" for the purposes of this question.

I'd like to say I'm gonna flip the switch and die trying to save the little girl. However I dont know the people on this train, and it's easier to let them die if I played no role in causing that fate. So might just let the train go off the bridge.
But theres lots of variables to this one. Train making a trip from the prison? Eh fuck em. Is there time for me to try to stop the train? I always carry tools in the truck, including a hacksaw, hammer, tow rope, and a shackle. Might be able to derail the train so it doesnt go off the bridge, possibly nobody dies.

Lmfao...no time for anything but a split second decision...flip the switch or don't.

It’s black and steam trying to get the DeLorean up to 88 miles to get back to good old 1985 so Jessica’s mum never buys that beer that puts her over the edge to hook up with bob ( jesicas dad ) this her not being born for a few more years so she will never get in this situation amd the only choice you have to make is 1 scoop or two on your ice cream cone.

God probably had something to do with her being stuck there in the first place. Or he'll be the first to receive thanks when she gets out but the train crashes. Or thanked that the train didn't crash and crushed poor little Jess. Dude's in a no win here, bro. My question is where's mom and dad and why didn't you get up earlier and catch the train that didn't have this kind of drama?

Sacrifice up to 500 for Jessica, no way. Even if Jessica was family.

Coincidentally I was watching Flight 93 yesterday. Was thinking there's a shitty situation in which someone was potentially going to have to make the decision to instruct a fighter pilot to ram a commercial airline causing at least the death of 40 (44) civilains to prevent far more casualties. What a call to make.

You never said how fast the train was moving? I’m close to the track and will wave and yell so the train will stop and save everyone.

Last time I heard this is was 5 strangers vs 1 Jessica which made it a bit harder but, with 500 peoples lives at stakes...

Do you do nothing...sacrifice Jessica for the 500?
Of course.

What if Hitler was on that train?
Is he already evil at this point cause if he wasn't, then no, but if he was it means he's probably surrounded by 499 Nazi's and that's a pretty easy decision.

What if Jessica was your daughter?
Sorry Jessica.

While it can be an interesting moral debate...there are also legal ramifications. If you take an action that causes harm or death to another I'm not sure the courts would be able to consider your "moral" stance for said action. If you move that lever...it's murder. If you do nothing...it's just an act of God, an accident, fate...(pick one).

Only halfway down the page and the question has changed several times already. You've lost control of your audience. This is now a solution looking for a problem.

Pull the switch, hurry to the bridge to watch the carnage. Go back and rape the girl and then put the switch back so the next train hits her.

That's what my god wants me to do.

I hear ya. I was just trying to show that by altering the situation/circumstances one might change their opinion/actions. Sorry for the confusion.

Bullshit. If Jessica was your daughter you’re pullin that lever. I’d sacrifice anytning for my family. Anything!

I’d flip the switch. Once the the first two train car passes the junction I’d Then flip the switch again. Maybe it would derail the train and save almost everyone.

And that's the difference between you and I.

I would much rather attempt to take on the pain of losing a child between myself and my wife then knowing in order to spare our daughters life 500 other families would have to lose theirs.

Sometimes you have to dive on the grenade.

I think the biggest question of all, is which Jessica is better?

You don’t want the pain of losing a child. But that’s something you don’t understand fully until after its happened I imagine. Even after, I don’t think it’s ever fully understood.
