Must of been 98-99 at Hangtown. I was on a 125 and the track was really sandy this day and you could rail corners. I thought I was going super fast and was coming down one of the hills and got passed by a red streak. I pulled off the track with everyone else and watched as Steve Lamson destroyed the place. My wife couldn’t watch thinking he was going to wad up he was going so fast.

Team Yamaha rider Kieth Bowen. An hour and a half north of Detroit there was an open practice at an outdoor SX track, It was my first time on a track and my first bike-83 YZ80.

I was down in Florida for the winter when I was 19 years old... I was traveling around, hitting races and practicing anywhere I could in a Chevy van with a brand new KX250.
Mind you- I was making this winter trip as a way to get a mega jump on the local expert competition up north, as well as laying the groundwork for a potential pro career... (at least this was the thinking of a 19 year old kid racing at the time)

I went to some sand pit riding area (I think it may have been Brooksville) and was really struggling and sucking wind from riding in the deep sandy, whooped out trails and sand bowl.

So I'm finally getting going, feeling slightly better about myself, when I hear someone behind be just totally pegged. Before I can even turn around, some guy in Fox gear on a Suzuki totally blows by me, lays it sideways while completely wide open into a berm, then just totally sandblasts me with a hailstorm of sand roost.

Before he was completely out of sight (which wasn't long at all) I read the back of his jersey... "Tichenor".

Ron Tichenor was my first barometer of what it would take to race pro and it was rather depressing realizing it probably wasn't in the cards for me...!!!
Sounds like you were at Croom, The pit sure does get brutal.

Another time when I was in Jr high school we used to ride at a place by me house in SoCal called Vasquez Cyn. A lot of guys had tracks back there. Kiedrowski and Bob Moore used to ride up there a lot. I would see Larry Brooks ride up there. But there was this huge plateau that these guys would jump that was insane. When you went up the face of this jump it was like a dirt road and you couldn’t see anything but sky when you hit the lip and it was super long and then a huge landing again on what seemed like another dirt road. First person I ever seen jump this was Mouse McCoy on his KX 80. We would sit on top and we could hear him coming as he must of had his bike 5th gear pined. He would lay the bike flat over this thing and just barely clear it. I think I was more scared watching him jump it than he was. I also watched Larry Brooks over jump this thing and land halfway down the landing completely bottoming out. He can buck up after he did that and said he almost hit the eject button. I used to ride with all those guys back in the day. Shoot my high school was like a motocross class. We had Mike Kiedrowski, Bobby Moore, Mouse McCoy, Willie Surratt, Eric Halgath, Toby Laws, Troy Welty, Charlie Morris all going to the same school at one time. Out at Vasquez Cyn I would see all these guys ride plus, Brooks, Eric Kehoe, Johnny O, Mercedes Gonzales and all kinds of other pro and intermediate riders.

1994 Red Bud night track race practice. Got there late and had to run A practice. 1st lap I hit the biggest double of my life 1st lap. Out of nowhere a guy drops from the sky in front of me. It was Nick Wey. Turns out it was a massive triple lol.

This had to be around 2000/2001, James Stewart was at Orlando MX Park, known as Bithlo to me, and I was in the back straight away section on my bangin' 99' YZ125 equipped with Pro circuit platinum Pipe and V-force reeds, pinning it and reaching speeds, of what I assumed, were nearing the speed of sound, when I see this flash of green come screaming around me and disappear off in the distance like I was standing still. I got to see James ride his KX125 a bunch out there - still amazes me that I got to ride on the same track as him.

Revival of the Elsinore GP. mid-90's. On a fast street section in the back, over a freeway overpass, I felt something on my right elbow. It was Ty Davis' hand letting me know he's next to me. We were both at 70+mph. at the time. Too funny.

I wasnt one to get blown by because I was a c rider, but Ryan Hughes came out and road Log Road in the early 00's. I think he just came back from over seas and was staying at Jeff Stantons place close by. He was lapping A riders. I think they did 4, maybe 5 laps.

Jeff Stanton blew by me in the Jackpine woods a few years ago like I was chained to a stump. lol.

After the race I was talking to my dad and said " What grown ass man wears anothers mans jersey on race day?" (As I had no idea Stanton had came up from the Ironman the day before and was really riding the jackpine Enduro).

My dad responded with..... "Jeff Staton that's who" Wink

I was blown away that I was even that close. haha

Yogi and DM18 walked pass me leaving TGI Fridays in ATL a few years ago before the SX race, does that count?

In the late 70s, I had the pleasure to get passed on multiple occasions by Mark Barnett racing in northern Indiana. In 1980 at a race in Fremont, CA, I got tired of waiting for my moto so I poached the 125 pro moto and got passed by Magoo. That’s still a great memory.

1980 E Street track, Marysville, CA. Practice session, me on an RM 125. Thought I was going fast until I heard a 4 stroke Thumper (TT 500) coming up behind me. It could be only one person - Dick Mann as he was the ONLY rider on a 4 stroke back then. I tried my best to stay in front of him, but he came up on me from way back, passed me and left me in his roost like I was standing still. That dude was incredible and he was pretty old at the time too. I knew right then that I was a squid and found out first hand why Dick Mann is a legend and all time great cycle racer - dirt or road.

Dean Wilson tried taking me out at Glen Helen once. I don't blame him though.
If dean wilson wanted you would of been on your ass before you knew what hit you. It’s not like he “tried” taking you out but just couldn’t get the job done lol.

That’s a bas ass picture! Ryno was really fast on those Honda’s. That’s a smaller tighter track I can imagine he made quick work of the local guys. Made the long drive and went to log road some years ago. Fun track to race on with some great dirt. Was worth the like 9 or 10hrs it took getting there

1985, Medicine Hat AB. I see “Rollerball” on a Suzuki blast by me at least 2 gears higher than me... so I decide to Drop the Hammer.

Unfortunately, I dropped the ball instead lol. It was verrrrryyyyy humbling.,. They are Pros for a reason!

Never seen a 85 go faster. I am sure his pistons were toast after every moto. He came to a local race at Big Cedar Mx with the MTF crew in 2007. Me and my Dad watched in awe. We were amazed that with all that flicking of the bike, his head NEVER moved. He was also hitting a 120 ft quad on a 85 that we would cut the track and case on practice days on our 125's. We learned 3 things that day: He was going to make a name in the pro's, he wasn't going to make many friends along the way and when he crashed it was going to hurt.

Back in the EARLY 90's at Lake Whitney, hauling the mail (or so I thought as a 125 int), I was amazed at this kid that was smoking everyone on his KX80 - none other than Robbie Reynard. His corner speed was simply amazing on the whooped out beat up end of the day track conditions.

I always wanted to ask the local pros or even the dudes that just barely qualify for Supercross and nationals the stories they have, about being passed by the top dudes. It’s not hard to blow past some 50-year-old squid out at a track somewhere, but for a local pro that already halls ass Telling us a story of when HE was amazed at the speed of someone, that would be awesome to hear.

Kevin Windham shared one before. He said at practice during a national (don't remember the year) he was feeling great and thought to himself, "I can win today." Shortly after, as he was coming through a corner, he got passed by Mr. James Stewart railing the corner faster than he thought humanly possible. Windham didn't win that day.

Like a couple others on here I used to ride my 80s at Heath Vosses house. His biggest thing he would tell you is hold your line, make me pass you. Must have been real hard for him to fly by me on his CR250 while I was on my YZ80 ??

You can still see remnants of the track off 1283 Medina lake Texas. Drive by all the time.
