Dean Wilson is not eligible for a single-digit. (EDIT: I'm wrong)

A rider needs to win a 450 championship or a 250 MX championship to get a single-digit number. 250 SX winners aren't eligible.

Wonder what the logistics of seeing numbers 8 and 9 on the track anytime soon are. Has to be "A past champion that's actively racing". But don't all the guys in the hunt already have a permanent number they're associated with ? Who's in position to win a championship that would want to switch their number to 8 or 9 ?
Roczen picked career number 94, but he could have picked a single-digit number. I don't know if he's allowed to "change his mind" now, or he has to make the decision the year after a championship.

So, riders who seem like a reasonable possibility to win 450 SX, 450 MX or 250 MX this year and don't already have a single-digit career number:

Austin Forkner
Adam Cianciarulo
Marvin Musquin
Justin Cooper
Chase Sexton
Alex Martin
Dylan Ferrandis
Shane McElrath
Colt Nichols

In fact, with Jeremy Martin out, we are guaranteed having a new 250 MX champion who will be able to pick a single-digit.

Then there are guys like Wilson, Barcia or Savatgy who might be able to win 450 outdoors if the stars aligned.

My vote is #8...it hasn’t been used since Langston I don’t think...so technically he’s been #8 for a while

I believe Kyle Partridge ran #199 in 2015. I could be wrong but isn't there someone using it again this year?

Dungey went from career number 10 to 5. I think 5 might have still been in Laroccos name the year he chose 10.

He was #10 in 2009 when he won the 250 outdoor championship. Then he switched to #5 in 2010. Dungey didn't have any championships before 2009, so didn't have the option to choose a single digit before that.

2006 was the last year LaRocco scored points. So #5 would have come available in 2008 (I believe).

My opinion, but I still think Plessinger should have grabbed the #8. AP8 to me just has a ring to it. Cool

from 2001 ama press release

This is how the system works: Number 1 is reserved for the current national

champion in each series; numbers 2 through 9 are reserved for past national

champions in active competition. Riders who completed the 1999 season ranked in

the top 10 chose any available national number, which they keep until they

withdraw from competition, or fail to earn a national point.

In 2000, riders who earned career numbers were: Jeremy McGrath, 2; Jeff

Emig, 3; Ricky Carmichael, 4; Mike LaRocco, 5; Steve Lamson, 6; Greg Albertyn,

7; Larry Ward, 10; Ezra Lusk, 11; Jimmy Button, 12; Kevin Windham, 14; Timmy

Ferry, 15; John Dowd, 16; Robbie Reynard, 17; Doug Henry, 19, and Damon Huffman,

20.

Riders carrying career numbers for the first time in 2001 are: Sebastien

Tortelli, 13; Brock Sellards, 18; Stephane Roncada, 21; Travis Pastrana, 199;

and David Vuillemin, 934.

The rest of the field are assigned available numbers corresponding to their

earned national ranking. Riders placing in the top 100 will be assigned

available two-digit numbers until those numbers are depleted.

Here is the complete list of 2001 AMA National Motocross/Supercross

I’m guessing Alessi really didn’t “keep” his 800 since he scored no AMA points last year. When he came back (again I’m guessing. He may have asked to keep it) I’d bet if someone else took 800 this year he would have had to taken something else.

Don't quote me on this, because I'm not 100% sure, but I think the AMA said no more 3 digit permanent numbers a while back, but Mike was grandfathered in for one reason or another.

You’re definitely right on that one. But I’m pretty sure he would still have to earn enough points the previous year to keep the number which he didn’t do. I think he just got lucky no one else took it this year.... unless he asked the ama to keep it one more year like Stewart did a couple years ago and they agreed.

Reed has been since 03 with 22, but ran number 1 in 2009.

Alessi has run 800 since his amateurs, and he debuted pro in 04 right, not sure it's ever been interrupted so it's probably that.

Most permanent number in the history of motocross is 192.
3/13/2019 7:03pm
I personally (not that my opinion stands for anything) like the permanent number system.

Every year the 250s are changing numbers and its confusing especially for the big teams (TLD, PC, Geico, Star) because they are all kitted out the same.

I slightly prefer the permanent system, but it's close.

I think there are pros and cons. The earned numbers are cool because the best riders will generally have the lower numbers, and it's a "badge" for how well you did the year before.

But I also like the permanent numbers, so you don't have to learn new numbers every year.

Yeah, looks like he won national championships in '04 and '07, but he first started with #7 in 2006.

I believe he ran #80 at Loretta's since you can't run 3 digit numbers.

Mike talks about his 800 number in this video.
