That is quite the backpedal. I would say your crazy defensive response says more about you than him.

MXGP World Champion Jeffrey Herlings should learn in the coming weeks if he will change Red Bull KTM camps and attempt the 2019 AMA Pro National motocross series in the USA. There has been continual speculation that the 24 year old could make the switch since his broke his right foot in Spain at the end of January. Herlings had his first serious check-up on Monday to assess the surgery to repair multiple fractures and the doctors were allegedly pleased with the progress of his recovery as the Dutchman had three pins removed.

Herlings is still not expected to be riding his 450 SX-F for another month which means he’ll miss Grands Prix in Britain, Holland and Italy and is almost certainly out of the fight for the 2019 title.

Talk of Marvin Musquin, Red Bull KTM’s current AMA Supercross rider, allegedly requiring a knee operation means that a slot could be open next to leader of the 2019 SX series, Cooper Webb, for the thirteen-round American motocross championship starting at Hangtown on May 18th, which could still be a push for Herlings to reach full race readiness.

Herlings has publicly stated his willingness to attempt the AMA competition after briefly training with KTM Group trainer Aldon Baker and winning the final round of the Nationals at Ironman, Indiana in the summer of 2017. If he did make the transfer he would become the first defending premier class world champion to take to the line on American soil as a full-time member of the paddock. It is even conceivable that Herlings could be the first rider ever to hold both FIM and AMA crowns at the same time if he wins the contest in the USA (MXGP finishes in Hong Kong on September 22nd while the Nationals end on the final weekend in August).

KTM have been non-committal on the possibility of losing their MXGP star, especially as this would leave Tony Cairoli – currently holding the red plate – as their sole representative in grand prix and a presence that has shrunk from three riders last year to just one in 2019.

“He’s under contract to race in Europe and I’m not enthusiastic about this American story because we have a fantastic team with fantastic riders in the USA,” said Motorsport Director Pit Beirer recently at the MotoGP race in Qatar. “Without Jeffrey we don’t have a full line-up in MXGP and we’d already made all these cosmetic changes with Pauls Jonass moving to [Rockstar Energy] IceOne [Husqvarna]. It is always good to have a back-up and a minimum of two top riders so I’m not super-happy about him going to America.”

“It is not easy,” he added on the prospect of shifting the rider roster. “What would be easier is to add a guy [who is] already in America. In Europe we have a factory team that is ready to service three factory guys – minimum – and there is currently one in the structure that is still a rookie. Currently it is not enough for the effort we are making. I don’t want the team without a proper line-up because they want to work hard, they want to develop and make better bikes and better riders.”

Beirer and KTM have a special relationship with Herlings since bringing him into the Red Bull KTM outfit as a fifteen year old in 2010; this year is the tenth season of their collaboration and four titles and 84 GP wins have been taken in that time. The German is not ruling out the chance of American fans enjoying Herlings in the twelve round campaign but is remaining cautious. Much hinges on how the rider will respond to the final phases of rehab and whether the foot will be strong enough to even consider a strong period of preparation for the Nationals. If Herlings needs more time then he can re-enter MXGP in the summer and assist any title plight that Cairoli could be waging. “It is still a little bit too much speculation and I’d like to take this decision when Jeffrey has a date set to ride,” Beirer concluded. “He should be riding for more than a week so we can see where he is and we can make a plan. Don’t expect this decision quickly. It will take time.”

Interesting read, but I don't agree with :
"If he did make the transfer he would become the first defending premier class world champion to take to the line on American soil as a full-time member of the paddock."

JMB (in 1990), Albertijn (in 1995) and Tortelli (in 1999) would agree with me Wink

Here let me break it down for the slow people who dont understand... Lets finish this once and for all:

If you say Herlings win counts, when Tomac is in championship mode, you then also say that Webbs win counts, when Herlings is in championship mode.
If you say Herlings win doesnt count, because Tomac was in championship mode, then you also say Webbs win doesnt count, because Herlings was in championship mode. Both came from the back of the pack to the front.

Either they both count or they both dont. You can only pick 1, here are your options.

1. Herlings win counts, therefore Webbs win counts.
2. Herlings win doesnt count therefore Webbs win doesnt.

Whichever option you picked, that is now your position. Thanks for playing.

In moto 2 at Ironman, Tomac legitimatly had a title to protect and could not afford to race it out with Herlings. In moto 2 at Charlotte, Herlings had nothing to lose and COULD race it out with Webb. Herlings had clinched the mxgp title in moto 1 at Charlotte and had nothing to protect or reason to ride safe in moto 2. Tomac's reason for cruising at ironman is legit. Herlings was free to hang it out in moto 2 in Charlotte and he did hang it out. His ego would not have had it any other way. That's why he was a mile ahead of every other GP rider. Anyone saying Herlings had a title to protect or that he wasn't going all out when Webb beat him is full of shit. Anyone saying Tomac had a title to protect at ironman is telling the truth.

We both agree Im just trying to point out the flaws in peoples logic. You have to concede in arguments so thats what I did by making them dead even, even though Tomac had until moto 2 until it wrapped up, so he just had to finish both motos. Herlings had already wrapped it up and wanted to win like always and was trying very hard when Webb beat him. Still Tomac haters will argue till the cows come home, and at the end of the day we cant what if what Tomac would have done, so we can only go by results. So I just broke it down to pure simplicity.

I'd love this to happen. It would be a great way for Herlings to turn his injury from a negative to a positive. Can you imagine if he ran the nationals the year after winning MXGP, took the AMA title and then returned to MXGP to win again?

That would put him right up there with the very best of all time. Legend status.

I can't imagine that Herlings would be very happy riding around in second place behind Tony in the latter part of the MXGP season in order to help ol' 222 win the title.
Compare that to him coming over to the US to go all out for the championship.
In this respect, his priorities are probably much different than KTM's priorities.

Herlings racing us nationals is like villo racing mxgp, its just good for everyone. He may win, he may lose, he may crush the field but at the end it will have more people watching.

I was interested in mxgp in the early 2000s then kind of got out of it but when rv went over it peaked my interest again. And i was never a fan of rv here because he was pretty dominant.

Would be cool to see more guys go to one series or another based on their skillsets. I think someone like alessi might have been better skipping sx and racing mxgp even if he never won a title.
