I know this topic can potentially upset a few. Blood pressures may rise and tempers may flair.
This is a motocross discussion forum and this is just a bench racing question/discussion.
Could you imagine if Stew in his prime and Herlings would get in a good old battle just for bragging rights, and of course, who can come down the hill faster, who could twist it farther, and who had the bigger set.
What do you think the outcome would be?
Would Herlings try to take Stews front wheel out in a corner?
Would Stew jump on Herlings back?
Would it end up being a competition on who's flashier, throws bigger whips, and who can scrub lower?
Or as Carmichael would say, If I can't win, I'll make sure you can't win either?

Go back and watch some races from 2007. Even the 250s.

I don’t think they’re as fast today as they were then.

Herlings would win in MX ..no doubt , times have changed and MX has evolved ... just look at MXON results
to think MX got slower the last decade is ridicioulous ..

If we are talking prime? Stewart would be faster but Herlings would be able to keep him just close enough to pressure him into a mistake. Stamp it.

Just watched some outdoors from 05 or so and, although it’s hard to judge, they look like they’re going much faster than the guys today..

I agree when you say "MX got slower the last decade is ridiculous". I think the top US and Euro guys are faster than ever.

Bikes and physical fitness are so much better. Just look at the bodies evolution of riders.

I disagree when you say "Just look at MXON". In my opinion the MXoN does not mean anything. that race is too specific to make a general conclusion but she especially good for your ego and your "Euros are better".

Yesterday except Cairoli, the level was not very high in my opinion.

Herlings is the fastest/best I've ever seen in person. I saw Stew a couple of times in 06/08. Of course it's different bikes, different times from then, but Herlings now is by far the best rider on the planet. So to say that he couldn't at least compete with those guys would be foolish IMO

It's always fun to daydream about this stuff. I've only seen Herlings race in person at the MXoN last fall but what I've seen on TV leaves me astonished. That said he's not perfect and has been beaten off and on by a couple of our guys. I will say that I don't think anybody could go any faster than Stewart and RC were going in 2006-2007.

Could he beat Everts ? Everts beat Stew in his prime and RC had the upper hand with Everts in most meetings and RC regularly beat Stewart outdoors. So the real question is could he beat RC . Wink

Nobody on this planet can beat a Stew and RC in their prime ! Neither Herlings and nor Tomac/Villo.

And this is on big bike ! Now put everybody on 125/250 and Stew would kill everyone.

PS: And please don’t start with MXON 06. Ok everts won that day but we all know he would have nothing on a regular championship against Stew this year.

did you watch MXGP last season ? i think its ridicioulous to think riders from a decade or more ago were faster as the riders these days .... look at any motorsport how it evolved with time ... bikes and suspension are a level or 2 up these days ...RC and Stewart were class apart those days , but you could say same about Cairoli and Herlings these days

Funny how the MXDN quickly became irrelevant to US fans as soon as their riders could no longer win it???Shocked Tongue Laughing Laughing

If CR can still podium 17 years since his first podium then I really don’t think the level has gone up... if anything I would argue it may have gone backwards a little in SX
don’t get me wrong the guys today are amazing but CR JS and RC 03-06 were from a different planet

Maybe you guys can win again if you can coax Malin , Nicoll , and Herring out of retirement. Wink

When Everts beat JS7 in MXON 06, the best fastest lap in the race was Barragan.

how did CR do last time he raced the MXGP in Matterly ? just inside the top 20 , he is nowhere near top 3 in MX these days ... says maybe more about SX as you said but we are talking MX here and not SX

Prime Stew has to be in more imaginary races than everyone else combined. Here he is in an outdoor scenario and next week we will read what would happend if 07 Stew gives Webb only a 15 second advantage in a 10 lap Daytona race, How many times does Stew lap him? In a sense this is why titles are not everything. When ever a rider will ever do something INDOORS or OUT someone will say.... yeah that’s great and all but what about Stew?

We haven't won since 94, but at least we got on the podium when it was held at home ? ?

Outdoors, I believe Herlings would mop the floor with anyone past or present. He has basically reinvented how to race motocross on a 450 and is the only rider I have seen that works a 450 over like he's riding a 125. I think RC and Stew in their prime would put a hurting on him if they were all on 2-strokes but 450's? No way. Herlings has that machine figured out more so than anyone I've seen outdoors.

its clear you dont know what youre talking about .

Webb never beat Herlings at MXON and i know you are going to say he did at Charlotte ,
yeah he did but it was Herlings championship race after missing out last 2 years dont think he gave a f.ck about that second race he lost to Webb and Forkner ... and now you are going to call that a excuse ,
i know ...but its the same excuse that was used when herlngs beat Tomac at IronMan when everybody agreed Tomac was in championship mode ... or does it only work one way ?? Laughing

so settle down troll

Do you have that MXGP race on a continuous loop on your home DVD?

Mmm, Villopoto could definitely hang with Stewart and RC maybe even beat them.

Stewart is my favorite rider of all time, RC was better than Stewart in MX overral, RC and JS looked like god's compared to the rest of the field and they changed racing as we know it today, yes they were on another planet back then but not now.

Herlings would have them both same setup same era not sure by how much but Herlings is the next level MXer who raised the bar just like RC and JS did.

X2. Rc. Would handle both of them. Throw Rv in the mix finishing second.
