Didn't see anything major yet. Maybe a tad worn on intake cam and a spot on the front of the cylinder. Not sure how it jumped timing or where the flakes came from either.

Hard to tell from the pics but did the piston hit the valves? Are the valves still sealing in the head?

I'm going to check it out better today but it looks like the piston never touched the valves surprisingly.

The valves are ok. My main concern is the galling on the intake cam. Maybe that's where the aluminum flakes came from? Opening the clutch side in a little bit.

How many hours on this thing? I think I asked previously but you may of mentioned not having an hour meter, I dont remember. Any other signs of lack of lubrication other than the cam journal? You really need to pull the valves out of the head itself to be certain they arent bent.... I'd get in touch with the local dealer where you bought the bike.

Cam chain feel stiff and crunchy? Or nice and fluid in the joints?

13.9 hours. The chain was bending fine. No other signs just that one journal, the other 3 are perfect. Now that the journal is damaged idk if I can even use that head. Just checked the clutch and it's all good, I didn't think I did anything wrong but still wanted to check. Nothing that the clutch could have done to the head anyway.

Do you think it may have been a better idea to bring it to the dealer you bought it from? Now that you’ve tampered with it, Kawasaki may not be willing to help solve the issue.

Yeah I didn't want to open it because of that reason. I don't like people working on my stuff as well as having lots of aftermarket stuff that could be damaged. I wanted to know for myself. It may bite me but I took pictures as I did it. But honestly they don't really have to help dirt bikes don't have a warranty, would just be nice.

If your dealer is a Team Green dealer, you shouldn’t have any problems getting it sorted out.

Ive been on kxf:s since 04 and put alot of hours on them. Only had one engine problem, the "cage" on the main bearing broke and it started to make alot of noise. This was my 2010 kx450f with 45hours on but the dealer actually stepped up and gave me a really good price on the parts. I also got new outertubes for my 16 kx450f from Kawasaki so they stand behind their product. I bet they solve this for you.

Just out of curiousity, (not saying THAT was the point of failure) what oil were you using?

I'm not worried about it. I have already been talking to the dealer.

Honda Hp 4 10-40. I used that in my 16 and had 93 hours before I sold it. I change the oil and oil filter every three rides.

Fair enough. Oil screen gummed with any frag?

Haven't checked it, the oil filter didn't have any inside though.

The oil screen had a few aluminum pieces and some blue things but it wasn't really that bad. I'm kinda debating just rebuilding it and doing Carrillo rod, PC piston, PC head. I got a piston yesterday for $250 with the sale, gives me an excuse to do it anyway.

Was looking it over the root of this was definitely that journey not getting oil for some reason. The cam doesn't even spin sitting in there. The other journey's are perfectly fine which is odd.

If cam siezed up in journal, could the timing gear spin on the cam? I think I remember some older honda's doing that.

Yes pretty sure thats what happened. The lobes are in the wrong spot with the timing mark in place.

Really stupid question - was the oil filter in backwards or an oil passage clogged? Seems like a freak failure.

Found out what happened. It was my fault, I guess the basket only dropped into the first gear not the smaller one. It broke causing the oil pump to not be connected. Guess I'm eating 2k oh well.

Oh mannn I almost did the same thing. Bummer, I even posted a warning here and I even emailed Hinson to tell them they might want to add a warning to their installation instructions ?

That sucks. Thanks for being honest with us. You had me a little worried about mine just randomly cutting out. Are you gonna be able to fix the head?

Yeah it's hard to admit when you made a dumbass mistake lol. Idk I asked pro circuit about it but they haven't answered yet. My plan is to split bottom end inspect, get a Carrillo rod on the crank. I have a PC piston on the way, going to get the full PC head/camshafts/ valves. They haven't released them yet so I asked eta. Vortex ignition and vp fuel. Should be fun.

Talk about making lemonade out of lemons! Its for sure a bummer, but a lesson learned and I suppose this thread will help out others which is good. As I was reading through the thread, I couldn't help but recall Jbulz's post and wondering if that is what bit you. In the end it sucks, but at least it wasn't more catastrophic or worse a cause of a accident. Keep the thread posted with the build updates, sounds dope!
