Still haven't figured that out because mine are pretty damn good. Maybe not quite as good as the forks on my 14 yz450, but they are good enough for the average guy.
Frankly I hated that fork in stock form -
The crf, kxf, and showaba on the 10crf250r were the SAME fork as the 06+ SSS on the yz
Yet somehow MXA always seperated this fact in the magazine. The SSS is an AOS fork - so is the 05 yz AOS - but internally the 05 fork is a bastard year fork - with small base valve piston, spring in lower fork leg as part of unsprung mass (bad) and had a terrible baseline setting IMHO
Some frames are more rigid than others, but the engineering principles of a larger fork are sound. A larger air/oil chamber results in a more progressive air spring. Less flex results in less stiction. They are lighter. Obviously setup would be key, but the dampening doing the job as opposed to flex to make up for poor dampening. If less rigid is better, why doesn't anyone run 44's or 35's anymore? Why do current forks work better with slick coatings? The answer is because they flex so badly that with conventional anodizing forks wear out the upper fork tubes creating fouled oil and loose tolerances. Not bushing wear, fork tube wear that cannot be repaired.
Maybe one year KTM and Husky will offer them on the Factory Editions, or at least through the parts network. Right now, if you are not running a race team, they are not for sale. Build it and they will come.

AKA the lower stanchions are aluminum.
Engineering 101 - almost all materials have a similar strength to weight ratio - aka steel is twice as strong as alum - and twice the weight. True even to wood vs metals...
However - side note - their character is different...
Once we got smart - and realized that stiffness/strength went up cubed (^3) vs diameter - but weight only went up squared (^2) vs diameter....we then used lighter/weaker materials with larger diameters to get a same strength part at a lighter weight.

If Im not mistaken - the modern 52's are an all aluminum lower tube - at a larger diameter to keep the strength - but they WOULD have a HUGE issue for the consumer - aluminum DOESN'T have an infinite fatigue life - AND it's far more prone to massive failure than steel.
Maybe the older versions are steel - but I think the modern SX ones were dlc coated alum.
If we are going to rule out aluminum for the masses, what do we do with frames and swingarms and hubs etc?
My point is this, if KYB's factory works setup uses 50mm (with steel DLC lowers), and WP's best is 52mm, why/when will this long accepted development (thousand of hours and only available to factory riders) be the next advancement in production forks, if even for a special edition model? If one of the big fads is kit suspension, when will it be available without having to pay for 2 sets and sell the stockers to get it done? Not something that is "based on" or almost like it, but the real thing? Instead of $5k for a kit, if it was production it would be maybe $2k more with the credit for stock production volume, similar to the KR94 edition?
Why is it that forks are the one of the weakest links in production bikes, with most accepting and assuming that it is normal to use tuners, coatings and full kits to get them right for each rider in spite of a multitude of adjustment methods?
Why would you say the forks are the weak link of stock bike? The current stock Showa internals and basically the same as the works version, KYB is in the same boat...WP's 48mm CV internals are the same as the ones in the 52 other than the spring tube difference.

I say that about forks being a weak link because there is an entire industry (within a niche industry) that survives off of tuning forks and shocks, and selling massive upgrades and kits. Most OEM's are not giving us the developments they have learned that work like large diameter tubes and friction reduction. Instead they gave us air forks which has now run it's course back to springs. I realize that it is custom and expensive and there are wear parts and maintenance involved. I believe there is a market for kit suspension off the showroom, but not for $5k more. The KR94 version is the closest I have seen, and the Kawasaki forks with DLC, and the Gas Gas GP with the technical touch KYB's. None of those blew the price up. I'm specifically targeting KTM/Husky Factory Editions.
