Hey guys-thanks for the prayers & well wishes. It’s been a rough go but we’re making progress slow & steadily. They’re trying to get me out of bed for 20 mins @ a time but so far I can only make it about 8 min. Absolutely no strength or stamina. Those 8 mins feel like a full on 20 min moto. It has really helped me a lot when I get calls/visitors & replies to posts. Will update again in a day or two. My last surgery to fix my ankle was yesterday so now just have to learn to walk & heal. Will be starting physical therapy.

Thanks again to my moto family
I’m very stoked that you’ve been able to get everything addressed. I hope rehab is quick and easy.

Heal and be happy.

So Howard, had you been on the Maico, would it have knocked that tree out of the way for you?!?! Glad to hear the progress, keep it going and we’ll see you at the track!

Guys,

First off thank you for all your prayers & well wishes !

A few corrections, no thoracic fracture, but a refracture of L2.

A fractured rib on my left side.

A bruised pancreas.

I’m now in a nursing home/ rehab facility & after 22 day’s in bed I’m as week-as can be.

Just trying to do 3 sets of 20 leg lifts with my good leg is kicking my but big time.

After dong 10 of 20 hip lifts in a set I was in a cold sweat & my heart rate was pounding.

All my muscles have atrophied & I’ve lost a good deal of weight.

But I will get back in shape when I can put weight on mt ankle approx 90 day.

Which injuries are related to when the wife found out what you had done?

I just saw this. I don’t know you but you are in my prayers. It sounds like you are out of the woods now, which is great! Keep working and you’ll be back in no time. I had s very similar crash 4 months ago. Whiskey throttle 3rd gear 450 over the berm. Landed on different track, 1 foot from a tree. Still broke my back but could have been much worse. Heal up soon!

Congrats Howard. Now, about that in home therapy, I have these Maico engines...

I have a couple things to drop off at Randy Porter’s for some welding and need two engines gone through from the flood.

Glad you are getting to go home. That’s gotta feel good!

On a lighter note, I made it out to rio sunday for the first time since the weekend of the Houston sx in 1995. Place has come a long way since then. Track was absolutely epic. Just kept thinking of this thread as I rode. Made damn sure I didn’t go over any berms lol. I can def see how you could though on some of the faster sections. Sucks that happened to you at such a great place/track.

Have been watching this thread, just want to say GOOD for YOU that you are going home soon.

Having been through similar catastrophic injury of myself and a family member, You show a great mental strength that is needed to overcome the physical impairments you sustained. It's a tough journey but tough people persevere.

All my best during the rough road ahead that is PT/OT. Keep this attitude and you will achieve your goals with recovery.

All the best Howard, from an internet Vital stranger that doesn't know you, but knows you will be back better than ever.

p.s. Newmann-therapy on fixing some Maico engines may just be what the Dr. ordered when you are able..... I sold my mint Maico 125 to Mike Hanlon down in Texas years ago so unless you want to build some Honda engines, I got nothing to keep you busy....lol

Gang,

I got great news today, as I put maximum effort into my physical therapy I’m going home Saturday morning.

Home to my own bed! Home to my wife & home to home cooked meals.

Like I said before, I’ll have therapy at home 3 times a week, but worry I’ve instructed the wife to be the drill Sargent & not let me miss my “new work outs”

Once again to all you that sent payers & well wishes, a BIG THANK YOU! I cannot begin to tell you how much it help me stay strong & focused to get back on my feet.

DL,

I don’t think I’ll get back on the Ktm 450, I might ride the old Maico one more time before I sell it!

I don’t want to put the wife through the worrying about me getting hurt, She’s went through hell as They weren’t sure that I would make it for the first 24 hrs.

Someone who shouldn't be allowed to use a phone...or keyboard. But one down vote on each message through the whole page just shows that there's one idiot.

Glad to hear you're making such big strides in recovery. I'm sure you'll have some low points but just keep your eye on the prize.

Attitude really does make a big difference. I went thru some cancer shit over the winter and had some low points, but really tried to keep a positive outlook. It did really help and my recovery is way ahead of schedule.

Best of luck!

Heal up soon Howard. It's too hot for MX in TX right now and the tracks are all wet right now anyway, so just work on getting back by the fall cool weather season. Set a goal, the Rio Old School Reunion is always a good one...
