Should be MXA's 35th anniversary this year.....Wild guess that Aug./Sept. '73 was first issue. Usual time of year get peep at next years bikes....
Don't hold me to it; just know sometime later in '73 was first MXA issue released. Remember the impatient wait, being a teen and all.
"Laroy Montgomery (it is like Leroy only with a “Laa”) was my oldest motocross friend. Older than my longtime racing buddies Tony D or Ketchup Cox. I met Laroy when I was racing in Texas about 40 years ago. We raced in the same class together for several years, but he was more than that to me. We both raced out of a Hodaka shop in Richardson, Texas, called Big R Cycles (owned by the Bradshaw family). Laroy and I teamed up together with the rest of our crazy tribe of North Texas kids to race at Mosier Valley, Pecan Valley, Strawberry Hill, Lake Whitney, Azle and Paradise Valley. "
RIP Lynn
seems the 1st issue had a brown cover with a YZ rider, or maybe it was the one with Bob Grossi (that's right Bob, not Billy!) catching bugs with his open mouth as he flew his Husky over a jump. at 60 cents a copy (later 75 cents), MXA was the best!

Growing up adjacent to large Fort Ord army base military training grounds eventually got me into riding and then racing motocross. Varmits (or Varmints) track ('74-'80)was a relatively large scrambles course, located off of Reservation Road, across from the army base air landing strip, amongst lots of oak tress, maybe 5 miles from the ocean. It was a sandy course starting with 1 long straight leg running slightly downhill, with a tight burm-buster left turn and then running like a TT track with sand and jumps over at leat 15 more turns. At the start of the day, the track was nice and level, watered down, which was cool during practice, then by end of the day, was a sand pit in some areas, and open lines for the rest. I remember at most maybe 25 racers, usually the same cool people, ranging from 80cc class up to 125cc. dont remember if there was a larger bore class. Straight aways allowed us to completely top out the bikes, maybe doing 70mph as I remember it.
Buffalo, Minnesota: Right next to some train tracks. Strange black dirt that was super soft when moist, but like concrete when it dried. My first race on a full-size bike.
Moto Mecca - CA style moto park
Fogelsville - held the 1976 PA National, possibly one of the best MX tracks of it's time
Lycoming - hills, hills and more hills
Stormstown - had a monster ski jump hill
Tunnkhanok - off-cambers galore
Bethal
Bushkill - Freemansburg Hill Climb site
Slatington - Now the Boyesen Family private track
Chambersburg
Boiling Springs - crossed the dragstrip pavement 2 times
Trailways - the TT section on the night track was cool
Selinsgrove
Eagle Rock
New Tripoli - only raced one time and what a mud race it was!
Susquahanna Speedway
Oxford
The New Tripoli track was called Spring Valley (I think), built by the Lehigh Valley Dirt Riders, a group responsible for many great tracks in their time. It had a few practice days and one race, which was a total mud fest. 1979 was the year I believe, on a farm which is now owned by the Rothrock group (think car dealership). Sadley closed due to township problems.
I have some amazing pics of the Foglesville track, which was actually located in the small village of Siepstown. Aerial shots and more! My daughters took ballet lessons near by the old track, about 5 years ago I took a walk out to the old site. Absolutely untouched other than farmers fields, a junk yard and some surrounding homes. Give me some time and I will post some of the pics and the amazing history behind the place.
Damn this gives me chills thinking back to these places that were such a major part of my families life.

What happened that day for me is a long story that I don't want to bore anyone with, I just wanted to see if we knew some of the same characters who raced in D22 and midwest in those days:
Chuck Munson-Mr. "factory" look Suzuki-Rode open bikes.
Johnny Spaw-Hondas-"No Fat Chicks" sewn on his leathers-wild man I ran into years later and we spent an hour laughing about those days-he was driving race cars last I knew.
Rich Halstead-I always felt he would win at Lorettas and go even further-super talent-the best out there on any given day. What happened to him?
Tracy Bachman-funny little dude,SUPER fast. Saw his name in an Arenacross line up a few years ago.
Brian Hunt and his brother __________. Nice fast guys.
Steve Hickman-Nice guy-manager at Garvis Honda in DesMoines
I raced some other Iowa tracks-all long gone-do you remember Le Grand -just outside of Marshalltown, landmark off highway was an old bus- big topo there with a huge drop-down and fun layout-site of my first race ever. New Hartford-flat and fast, Tipton- long, full of topo, fun track- Another track just outside knoxville, they had night races and this HUGE "anthill" looking jump in the middle of the track that went through the flat valley. I remember Wendy Oaks as Springville, and I remember it was in a big valley with the spectator table-top on a huge hill above the valley where we all pitted. Did you race then?

HEY KLEIN 8, I was there in 1984 (at Wendy Oaks)-there was a qualifier for Loretta's that year, too. I can't believe this track that CHANGED MY LIFE is getting mentioned by someone that was there too. So Cool. I have often thought of trying to find it while visiting my family in Iowa (I live in North Carolina now) Anyway, I was there at age 15 in '84 with my girlfriend and my parentsqualifying in the 125B stock and mod classes. My Krause Racing (remember them?) modified '83 KX125 seized solid in practice, so I had to only concentrate on my stock 84 KX125, freshened to new two weeks prior.

Hey guys! I was also there that day but only watched. I raced that track that year in the 80jr class. Super cool layout and very technical for the tracks of that day. I was a local at Tipton hills. I remember racing both of these tracks on their last days running. Brings back a lot of great memories! I remember all the fast guys, Jonny Spaw, Rick Munson, Richie Halstead, Bryan & Dana Hunt, Junior Jackson, Tracie Bachman, Shaun Huggins, Mark Plowman, Chad Pederson, Dusty Thy, Mark Bolton, ect. I remember these days just like it was yesterday. I even have some great video of some of these tracks. Do any of you guys remember Steve Tomfeld? He was a pro rider from letts Ia that raced in the late 70s until I think 1984. Also remember the track at Sigourney? And one last good one, remember going to Keithsburg Il in the winter months and watching some big name locals hard at practice. Because of the sand, it was really the only place you could still pound down some motos in the middle of winter. This place runs a hare scramble once every year in febuary. Its almost like a 2hr motocross race. Great place if your in for a workout! This place is brutal!
Thanks for al of the memories guys!

Hey Klein8, Not sure that I remember you or your son but I totally remember Chet! He was very quick and we always had some good battles. We always raced alot at CR, Brighton, Kahoka and Coal Valley. He also did very well at alot of the more local Mike Kidd arenacrosses in the pro class. I havn't talked to him since his accident how"s he been? Be sure you tell him that I said hi! Tell him to get on here and post.
It's always nice to hear from someone that remembers the good ol' days.
I will try to go through some of my old school photos from back in the day and post them on here. I know that I have alot from Tipton Hills. If any of you guys have some photo that you would like to share, please post them.
Taks care and Happy Holidays!
At the end of two motos I think I got a third overall and you could have told me I won or got last and I wouldn't have questioned it.
I remember ruts that literaly sucked me off the bike and the bike never fell down. I also remember them funneling us into a chute to score us and washing our number plates off before the scoring table.
The funniest part was that the motorhomes had to be pulled out of the pits (uphill) with a tractor.
