Well John Short would maybe, maybe be a fill in that would be worth it. Cartwright hasn't made a main this season?

Both Short and Cartwright are college students and pro Supercross racers. This is something that has NEVER really been done successfully....and for a good reason......it's almost impossible to manage. The story is the upside. It's an interesting idea but probably not a reality. Hartranft and Renzland are probably faster than both of them.

We've known Short since his amateur days on an 85. He's a bright, super nice kid, and fast on a dirt bike.

Look for a Fox Sports 1 story on Cartwright this coming weekend as they shadow a day of his training and classroom schedule.

Full disclosure, dad is biased.

Well said and looking forward to the FS1 story this w/e.

That's truly admirable. Interested to see that piece during the next broadcast and I will be keeping an eye on and pulling for your boy the rest of the season. Best of luck to you guys.

Yes i know the story about Cartwright, they've done a story about him before and it is a cool one(and very, very smart)!

This thread could've been about 2 other privateers and i would've wrote the same thing. Factory 250 teams are relatively conservative when it comes to fill in rides(especially privateers).

I remember when PC had lots of injuries a few years ago and Matthes did an interview with Mitch. Matthes asked about fill ins and Mitch instantly responded "who is out there?". Mitch didn't get a fill in.

Props to them. On TV I will look at Short and Cartwright now to see where at = immediate fan.

This is something to think about since there has been some debate over the fact the 250 is a "feeder class" or "development class". Maybe the riders would need to have a degree or to be on their way to pass one. Add a school sticker and some emphasis during the show that the riders are educated, it could give a better image of MX/SX in general (i.e. for parents to fund their son's racing effort) and a good safety for the riders for their future. That is something to think about and that is quite important.

BTW: Brayton and Webb have a college degree if I remember right, and it didnt bother them too much to be successful.

Why not Hartraft? Is the 114 locked into any deals? Kid is making mains, made a huge name for himself by taking out half the field in the first east coast round... Mistake on his part... AMA was pretty hard on him IMO...

I would not be surprised if Hartraft is a Star Racing rider in 2019.

No your right... But he flew into the next lane, then just turned around and went. Probably just outta sorts from getting bucked off the track.. Racing incident. But AMA was not happy he did not go back to his original lane and start. So that's where the 8 positions come from.

I've never understood the reasoning of whomever the fill in HAS to be a top rider. Are they that worried that their "factory bike" doesn't make into a top position and looks bad? Heck, they have the ultimate excuse.. "he's just filling in".

Scour the results, ask questions in the pits, and do a few phone calls to see who would benefit from the ride.

The story alone is worth it and heck.. maybe even a guy that barely made a main or maybe who hasn't ever made a main.. .WILL make it on better equipment, furthering the story and who knows, maybe having the better equipment will jump start them into consistently making the mains or jumping up 5 or more spots in the standings.

I don't see the down side to not having "anyone" fill in as it was budgeted to have a racer on the bike anyway.

Neither Brayton nor Webb have college degrees. There are 6 (non-injured) Yamaha riders currently in the top 22 points standings. All 7 have support rides.

6. Luke Renzland
12. Nick Gaines
14. Brandon Hartranft
16. John Short
20. Ramyller Alves
22. Joshua Cartwright

They should pick a few privateers out, then have vital do a pole and winner gets the ride. Be good publicity and if he sucks they can just blame the vital know it alls....

Neither Brayton nor Cooper Webb have college degrees. You're probably thinking of offroad/endurocross/extreme enduro rider Cody Webb. He has earned an engineering degree I believe. I could be wrong on the engineering part.

Why not? It's budgeted already. You have sponsors names to be out there (presence in the pits at the least), and who knows, you could make someones dream come true. Maybe they get a main qualifier or.. an LCQ winner.

They will get TV time regardless. "Filling in for Star Racing Yamaha is ______")

I see what your saying but finishing last or nearly last doesnt bring mucj return id say thats the biggest reason. Hell finishing 7th doesnt bring much return.

Id like to see some thought put into track design tio keep from needing 15 fill in riders after 5 weeks of supercross.

Hes locked into a deal with Rock River Yamaha. I like seeing some of these guys get the call to fill in on a factory bike like Star. But at the same time i think its kinda shitty when a team like Rock River has a good guy getting good results, and then they gotta give that up for some races to please the factory. I see both sides of it. Hartraft has been having a good rookie season, outside of not qualifing for one of the rounds. Id like to see him get a ride with one of the big teams next year.

Id like to see this happen to guys who are in mains but full privateers . it’s a win win scenario. If the kid steps it up on better equipment the team will get all the praise , if he finishes the same they still get awesome praise and media attention but it’s just a fill in so no huge result base . . Oldenburg is a prime example. he has stepped It up once he got his fill in opportunity at TLD few years ago .

Shaw
Cartwright
Short

They’d be on my list for a possible fill in. All these riders have a good wrap .

Hard working , humble and down to earth riders .

I think the obvious solution is Jason Lawrence.

Didnt Hahn point out of this class? Did he put in his paperwork to be reinstated? You know something nobody else knows?

Wonder how hard it would be to lure Blake Wharton away from IBCorp. He's not going to be in the west coast title hunt anyways, already riding a Yamaha, would bring a decent amount of publicity, probably put it straight into the main and has the most upside out of all the guys mentioned.

Pity Ryno got to him first I guess.
