Not to gross anyone out - just to demonstrate that it can be done by us old guys - here's a pic of me at about age 54 or so when I went on a strict routine of Keto, intermittent fasting, HIIT and weightlifting. This was about 12 weeks of effort.

How much of that is genetics? How much is testosterone? how much is working out.... I have the same body style as you do. I have never had a problem putting muscle on and can get into muscle shape shape pretty quickly in the gym. My cardio has never really been a problem, I seem to have a strong heart. It's muscle fatigue and joint pain I deal with. I don't usually run short of energy.

Not putting you down in any way, you obviously care about your health and well being but I know a couple genetic specimens that live like shit and don't really take care of their body and they look like they work out all the time, six pack abs and all. Bastards Laughing

Vetmxr - There is not an athletic bone in my entire body! LOL I am woefully average. I would never have made my high school football or track team. I was overweight as a kid, and still have the tendency to gain weight easily. I had to work very hard to be in the shape and perform to the level needed to make and stay on the SWAT team. I had team mates that were ex Force Recon, Rangers, college athletes, etc, and it was very easy for them . Not me. I can't just "watch what I eat" and do a little exercise a couple times a week and get or even stay in shape. It has to be a 7-days-a-week full time commitment for me. I can truthfully tell people if I can do it, they can do it. It just takes determination and will power. My results were the result of everything together. I wish I could get results like you, but it just isn't in the cards for me.

Whether you have heredity on your side or not, if I could recommend one thing for 50 year old's (or those approaching), get a cardiology stress test / EKG / ECG. At the very least, listen to your body.

I started turning up my workout last year (49), getting ready for my new class. 50 year old MX'er at chicken licks raceway.. Well, a couple things were kinda weird (back in July '17). I was short of breath on the bike at the gym, my left arm, then right arm went numb when I would mow the lawn, a leisurely walk around the neighborhood was not so leisurely.

Went to the doctor, they did the EKG/ECG, and stopped right there. Didn't even put me on the treadmill. Went to the procedure/surgery center and they found a 99% blockage of the LAD (Widowmaker). 2 stents, I'm as good as "new".

No issues today. Glad there is a today.

My dad dropped dead from a heart attack when he was 57.......ever since then I've been getting stress tested every few years. I've had every heart test done. Thats how I know I have a healthy heart.

I've got a real aversion to death...........it seems so permanentWink ...

Wow. So in ‘16 my Dad (73 at the time) was short of breath when we went to lake (walking back up to camp). He got his heart checked out and same thing LAD and a little blockage somewhere else. They went with 4 stents.

Point being, I made the false assumption “Hey, I’m in better shape than my Dad was at 48-50, I’m good!” So many factors that go into this stuff. Stress, diet, exercise, vices...etc.

I don't assume my heart is healthy.......I've been stress tested many times and have also been scoped through my wrist......I'm staying on top of my heart......I live a completly different life than my dad did...(smoking, not active, bad diet, never goes to a doctor..)

If anything gets me it will be my adhd and high stress with my job.......I'm self employed so everything sits on my shoulders at the end of the day. Not good for the ticker, another reason to go ride..Smile

Guy's I have good news. You can be in your 50's, fat, out of shape, never go to the gym, eat what you want and still have fun on a god damn dirt bike. I am living proof.

Its not whats going to kill you that takes you out. It's what keeps you alive that keeps you going. Do what ever the hell you want when ever the hell you want to.

Life is so simple. People make it so hard.

I can't seem to stop doing young guy things, and my body is about done. Looking for tips here please.

Super ADHD

ride and race every chance I get

pickup basketball on wednesdays

Try to lift weights twice a week

I still take stupid chances in traffic and always speed

I will still punch a guy in the cock sucker for running his mouth too much

I assume young women still want me

I still get shitfaced hammered way more than I should

At the age of 50, I'm actually thinking about taking up boxing, because I've always wanted to try it......

I still think I'm 20, but my body is shutting down, my joints are screwed and limit me like crazy. Any ideas of how I can get these feelings out of my head and become 'mature'.......I'm scared to death of being a young man in an old mans body......torture........Tongue

I am 43 and have ADHD. I quit riding about 2 years ago
because I was out of shape alcoholic who smoked. I almost died from pancreatitis so I quit drinking and quit smoking. I started boxing about a year ago and I have lost 20 pounds and feel better than I did when I was 30.
I’m selling the 450 and getting a 125 or 250F and I’m
going to start racing again for fun. I can’t wait.

I think intermittent fasting is a big big untapped resource for everyone....not just us older guys.
There is tons of research showing how it allows the body to get into a fat burning/healing mode for your body.
I'm doing a weaker version of what swatdoc is doing.
Stop eating at 7pm....eat again at 9am. Very easy to do. When I'm fasting...its just water and black coffee.
Doing it for about 12weeks and I too can actually see some abs.
My only workout is Orange Theory Fitness (HIIT) 2 days a week.

DBT - I'm with you on the intermittent fasting - it also has a LOT of health benefits, and helps the diet and weight loss. I tried doing the 24 hour fast 2-3 times a week, say from noon until noon the next day. I found that way to be a little tough to battle the hunger. What has worked and been easier for me is the daily 16 hour fast. I eat from noon until 8pm only on a daily basis. I don't get the ravenous hunger on that plan. The IF isn't foolproof though - you can't just pig out and eat whatever the hell you want after fasting. If you stick with Keto and combine it with IF, I think you'll be in good shape.

I really like the HIIT training as well. About twice a week is the max though, especially for us old guys. Done right, you will burn about 6 times the fat as low intensity cardio. In other words, two 15 min HIIT workouts will burn as much fat as jogging 30-40 min a day, 3 times per week, for a month. The trick is the HIIT raises your Basal Metabolic Rate for 24-36 hours after. So that means for 24-36 hours after your workout, your body continues to burn calories at a higher rate, even while resting!! Buuut - you gotta bust your ass and go all-out - to the point you are heaving for air between rounds, and you're telling yourself there's no fu@&ing way I can do another round - but you keep going anyway. I've been battling some injuries the past 2 years, but when I was in shape, I would go to the beach and do a 5 min jog to warm up, then 30 sec sprints, followed by 30 sec rest - repeat for 12 rounds. After the 5th or so round, you feel like you're gonna die!! LOL With my knee issues, I might forego any more running, and do HIIT on my bicycle. A 30 second all-out uphill sprint works pretty good. You could also do it on a rowing machine, elliptical, etc - just something you can go all out on. Bowflex makes a machine called the Max trainer which looks pretty good too - kind of a cross between stair climber and elliptical. Of course, you can do it with calisthenics too - check out Tabata - it's vaery similar and gets great results doing things like pushups, burpees, etc.

As a Cancer survivor, I will warn you to stay away from anything that boosts Testosterone, especially after 50 years old. It is well documented to host Prostate cancer. I have Stage 3 Prostate and Bladder cancer. I'm balanced out right now, so I'm hanging in there. Lots of complications. I was severely warned to NOT touch anything that boosts the big T. It's a death sentence for me. They typed my Cancer, and found the big T is the primary host for my type. There are over 350 types of Prostate cancer. Most of them are hosted, either primary or secondary, buy the big T. Sold my last bike a year ago after crashing my RM500AF in practice, second time in a week. Just can stand the internal pain. And I worked out with the VA PA trainers for a year before I got back on the bike. Take away, listen to your body, and get regular check ups including blood work up. I had NO symptoms, no warning signs, no pain. Went from hero to zero in one surgery. I've had 5surgeries, and it's looking like a 6th is in the future. My shrink says sometimes you have to just be a man and accept where you are. Only you know what your body is capable of. I'm a couple of months from my 60th B-day, by the way. Had my diagnosis at 52. Yep, it stole a big part of my life. So now I'm building an autocrosser. With age comes a cage. Even in pain, it's hard to sit still. I'm a poor spectator, always have been. Good luck on your life's journey.

My Father is 83, had never spent a night in a hospital until he had 2 heart attacks. So he's slowed down quite a bit. I think my Cancer came from a combination of Military and Industrial work, growing up in the pollution of So Cal, crappy eating habits (Red meat). Worked with nukes and weapons in Air Force. Worked Black projects at Northrop for 15 years. Just a shitty deal. VA takes care of me now.

No doubt some cancers are not compatible with extra test, but that doesn't mean that taking test increases your chance of cancer, in fact, in might actually reduce your chance of cancer. See my original post where I said that many Drs are now thinking it's the elevated estr that puts us more at risk

I feel ya OP and I'm only 32. I'm in great shape (have to be part of the job, active duty), just ran 10 miles yesterday, but the point you make definitely added to my painful decision to exit the sport last year. Besides preparing to leave active duty and starting grad school getting in a better financial place (moto or even weekend riding lets be honest is $$$) the thing we all put in the back of our minds when riding, the toll it takes physically on our bodies. There is no doubt eating right, exercise, etc. can help but as someone heading into the healthcare profession I see the impacts of certain lifestyles on an aging population. But as so many here allude to moto is such a drug its hard to just quit and fill with another vice, shit I'm sitting here on my deployment trying to figure out if I can afford to buy a bike, gear, etc. to get back into it. Good luck with your wanderings, these past 11 months moto-less have definitely been a struggle for me, tried MTB, etc. just not the same.
