I'm with Toolmaker on this. Infrastructure money, tax-wise, seems to go everywhere BUT into infrastructure. I see no reason and no logic in letting the Federal Idiots fuck up the web.

If a remote community wants the web? BUILD your own infrastructure and get it! If start with a satellite dish; but, that's just me.

The only way for me to remotely program ECUs (90’s design) for our customers is via a dial-up modem across an analog line...Laughing

Every time I dial-up it reminds me of the AOL days of getting CDs in the mail!

Why does an agency run by five unelected officials have that much power anyway? Frankly, the entire FCC needs to go away.

This law hasn't been in effect for very long and we didn't have any real problems before it. I'm for less regulation in general. Almost everyone has more than one provider to choose from if you include Satellite. If the providers pull too many shenanigans people WILL take their business elsewhere even if it costs a little more and maybe isn't quite as fast. That will keep the providers in check for the most part.

I'm thinking that most folks who don't think that government can do a decent job with utilities don't live in areas with quasi-governmental Public Utility Districts.

Our local PUDs are fucking golden overall. Building out fiber optic networks to places way out in the boonies, providing cheap, consistent power and water supplies.........

I think I'd be taking up arms if anyone seriously tried to privatize our stuff.

Maybe it hasn't been law for very long, but look at countries that dont have a similar law. You seriously think the same won't happen here?

And you're fucking crazy to think we can take our business elsewhere. 1,000 some odd people live here, and att/comcast are already raping everyone here. Slow service, outrageous prices, and slow/nonexistent customer service. Nobody is building anything to give more coverage in a town that doesn't even have public sewage. We're screwed.

Yes I do. I have been on the Internet since around 1990 and there has been no BIG problems for that entire time. The nice thing about the Internet was that the government wasn't involved. I wasn't in favor of them getting involved when there weren't really any big problems. And yes, if you can't go to a Wifi provider, or a 4G provider, you can certainly go with Hughesnet if you don't like Comcast. How exactly has your Internet life been hampered since they repealed the law because if they're going to play shenanigans with you they might as well do it right now. And how was your Internet life any better after the law went into effect from before it went into effect?

Answer your own question, what part of the Internet did the law make worse?? It was to protect us from a problem that hadn't happened yet, but is certainly coming.
And I can't wait to pay for overpriced, slow, spotty service to avoid att.

Do you actually know what the law is? What it does?

It seems many here have no clue what this is about.

The ISP’s want to charge you the user a premium to access content that they also own. They will build packages as add-ones. A 9.99 a month media package will include access to Netflix, Hulu etc. Yes, on top of the subscription you already pay.

Now look at how many ISPs own the actual content as well. They can provide their users access to their content at discounted prices, while charging non users premium access prices.

This why for a long time ISPs were prevented from owning media companies.

Think of it like this:

I’m a road builder who owns the highway infrastructure in your town. Now I also want to own the car dealerships in the area. Those that buy cars from my dealerships will get a discount to drive on my road. Those that Buy from other dealerships will have to pay a toll. And that little dealership that just started, well his cars won’t be allowed on the roads I own at all.

If you don’t pay to buy a car at my dealership to drive on my roads, well then you can take the slower back roads to your destination.

See how stupid that sounds. Well that is exactly what just happened with the Internet.

Further, the US has some of the most outdated infrastructure by any modern country. Our ISPs here are absolute trash. And they make money hand of fist. They don’t invest in their infrastructure. That would cost money. So now to keep “profits” growing all of the major ISPs are buying up all of the media properties.

This should have absolutely been forbidden.

I agree keep the government out of as many things as possible, but in certain things they are crucial to keep a level playing field and to prevent consumers from being raped by these major conglomerates, and to make sure competition and choice is available to consumers.

This is a big fail all around.

Semis SHOULD get charged more to use the public roads. And, I often DO take the slower back roads home with the interstates are all backed up during rush hour.

Bullshit. If you do why don't you explain it then? In laymen's terms. And more specifically, how it's bad? And I mean specifically, not the same shit of govt=bad.

Doesn't a gas tax charge semis more?? Idk about you but I'm pretty sure a tax on gas hits harder when you get 6mpg instead of 20mpg, or 35mpg. Whatever you're driving for the day.

Layman's terms: Just because they "can" do something doesn't mean they "will" do something. Especially if it pisses off their customers enough to cancel their subscriptions. Believe it or not a person does NOT need the Internet to survive.

Im sure someone will be along to build new roads alongside the existing roads, OR...maybe all the road builders will agree to stick to their own established area and jack up the tolls.

You only have to use it until the new low earth orbit satellite internet comes and it looks like there will be more than one option there in the not too distant future. Supposed to be about as good as terrestrial as far as latency.

Here's our government explaining how the Internet works when they first started arguing in favor of Net Neutrality:

Wow some of you are really drinking the CNN, MSNBC koolaid and have no idea what any of this means. If you are into big government and them having control of everything there are plenty of countries you can move to. I swear some of you "snowflakes" hear Trump and then automatically hate the idea. Thank goodness this happened and thank goodness for the good men that still have sense in this country!!!

Riiiight, because the Government would never do anything like that. They're infallible and perfect and never do anything but guard our better interests. Say, do the two words "Agent Orange" mean anything to you? How about the two words "Pruitt Igoe"? Ahhh, never mind.

2019- fucking internet doesn`t load, wtf. Why is this site slow? Fuck that site, this site is shitty but at least it works.

I can`t believe some of you think that big money will not take advantage of no rules. You learnt nothing from the past.

Any of you right wing cheerleaders want to put together a logical argument as to why this is a good idea? Saying "I dont want the government fucking up the internet" is just not good enough. How did they fuck it up, what will this do better?
