F1 is re-evaluating it's use of "Grid Girls". These Grid Girls seem similar to the Monster Girls/Lucas Oil Girls and 30-second card girls employed in SX and MX.

From the article "There's a lot of people respect the tradition of the grid girls and there's people who feel that it has become a bit dated, so we're addressing that."

In regards to MX and SX, I have personally felt this way for a long time. I am different than most men, there is no appeal to seeing models awkwardly stand around guys on the podium. Similarly, I don't understand the rationale behind a model holding the 30 second card while an official stands right next to her. It just seems juvenile and as though the promoters are appealing to the lowest common denominator.

Same thing with Miss Supercross - what is that about? She isn't bringing any information to the table that is new or intriguing, and generally it's painfully awkward to hear her stumble through whatever Twitter segment they have her doing.

I'm simply looking to start a discussion with this topic. Discuss, debate, flame, whatever.

Ever since the 4-stroke came along it is the most entertaining part of the show

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's too far when someone is forced to do it. If they offer women money to "model" and no one takes them up on it then it will be done.

Believe it or not, some of these women are functioning humans and actually go home and hold conversations with family after doing these gigs. They don't stay up all night wacking people off in the hallways of stadiums.

Mostly agree with you, now let's take a poll and ask vital how far is too far.. and do you think there are women out there willing to cooperate?
Prostitution, stripping, women are willing to do that..
So let's have it all?

Many of you have more than enough time to get your willies out at home in front of the computer. Does it really need to be all over the place at a supercross event.

I'm not proposing anything. I'm trying to create a discussion around a topic that I find interesting.

I honestly do not feel that passionate about the issue, I just think it's relevant to our sport. For one thing, people mention frequently how "motocross is a family sport"... well, it's hard to be family oriented when the only females involved are presented as commodities with no value beyond aesthetics... seems like an odd message from a family-oriented source.

If you don't think it's about objectification of women, try thinking of the last time you saw a straight up ugly female standing on the podium, holding the 30-second card, or interviewing riders.

To point out the absurdity and hypocrisy even further, imagine how it would be received if instead of a half-naked female, it was a half-naked dude holding the 30-second card - talk about sex scandals. If it's not appropriate for one, why is it appropriate for another?

And for the record, I'm libertarian, not liberal. So, I don't believe that anyone should be forced to do anything - whether it has to do with 30-second card girls, guns, drugs, or whatever. TO EACH HIS OWN.

I'm just trying to start a discussion... not label people liberals or conservatives as a guide to dismiss their posts.
I agree with you.
I realized a long time ago however that most people in our sport are decades behind in this department.
It's unfortunate really...

Isn't it different if it's just women not dressed in much, doing some type of modeling gig? That is different than actual naked women or pornography going on. Like you said, polls could be put out there which is fine but there are a lot of people in society these days that treat complaining like it's their full-time job.

If you think this discussion is about feminism you have a profound misunderstanding or are willfully ignorant.

When I was in grad school my adviser once told me that it's not worth arguing with people who lack the capacity for authentic self-reflection.

My posting this comment perhaps goes against the advice, but I'd like to believe most people have the insight to analyze their own schema's. .

Hate to break it to you but if you are offended by promo models you are not the target demographic of that company and those companies are okay with that. There are still plenty of people that enjoy having promo models at the races and events.

Also if you banned promo models or made it 50/50 male & female (like some countries are trying to do), there goes 20 or so paid jobs each weekend. And that money will not be given to privateers.

How about we discuss our opinions and attempt to understand where each other are coming from, rather than labeling someone "misguided" without elaborating.

I get it - critical thinking is hard. It's much easier to dismiss someone as misguided than to engage with them on their beliefs.

Edit: @KirkChandler. Who said anything about being offended or banning models?

My oldest is transgender, and has other mental health issues, MtoF. I’m as Alpha as they get, but this is the real deal and wicked hard on the person and our family. Like a living hell. So I don’t really get giddy at transgendered jokes, but to each their own.

The two most fun SX’s I’ve been to had an ME pit party, and they are fun!!! 2012 TO and 2016 MEC. My wife doesn’t mind, she was with me in Vegas (not at the pit party, she went shopping while I was in heaven, having fun, getting more hooked on their product. Lots of women appreciate beautiful women. I.e we watch the VS fashion show together.

Without the Ashley Sarto’s and Carrie Bolling’s of bike racing, that would be a “blah”.
Ralph, Jeff and Ricky....for most race fans, their looks alone don’t cut it.

Lots of good paying jobs too. This orange Monster drink is delicious.

I agree with the OP. I love looking at beautiful woman in skimpy clothes, but that's what the internet is for. Outsiders aren't ever going to take our sport seriously when half naked women are plastered all over the screen. Seriously you'd think we were watching monster trucks or perhaps freestyle motocross with the way our sport is presented.

My thoughts are similar. If we want to grow the sport, some professionalism is required.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. You'll probably get flamed for it though.

The article did. It's something that has already happen in World Rally (complete ban) and the government of Spain is trying to force MotoGP into having Umbrella Boys if they have Umbrella Girls.

Now Formula 1 is going to bend to complaints of people offended by grid girls and promo models.

Thanks for sharing. I think you raise an interesting point. The ME Pit Party seems like a good thing. My gripe is not that ME Girls exist, it's the amount of useless emphasis put on them by the TV crew..

Baseball doesn't bring in models to throw out every first pitch.
Football has a ref flip the coin, not a model who winks and makes a kissing gesture into the camera.
Hockey has a ref drop the puck.
Tennis has ball boys/girls to pick up the tennis balls when they are out of bounds.
Swimmers have an official who pull the trigger on the gun to start the race.

Why does motocross feel the need to have a model hold a card (with an official whispering in her ear so she knows when to turn a card sideways)?

That being said -- I think the idea of a ME Pit Party is great because it is separate from the TV package. It's part of the appeal of going to the Supercross and something that people can participate in if they choose.

Who the hell cares about outsiders??? People who are passionate about moto will get in, monster girls or not.

Also guys talking ''this is a family sport'' bla bla. Hell, if you go to any random beach in the summer you will see more naked skin then the monster girls are showing. So y'all don't take your kids to a beach on a summer day?

I agree with some of the other posters: As long as the girls are not forced to do it and get payed to do it, whats the problem?? They probably like all the attention they get.

I'm not so sure MX or SX feels the need to have a model hold the 30 second card. I'm pretty sure that ME is paying to have that model hold and turn the card...sponsorship/advertising, you know.

For me, the girls are easy on the eyes, but I'm not drinking the crap they sell, not the demographic.

No big surprise... Largely a bunch of moronic replies along with slapping labels on the OP.

Sorry OP, you're not going to get much in the way of intelligent discussion here.

Haha @ people thinking I'm a liberal.

I never once said that because I disagree with Monster Girls that I don't think it should be allowed or that other people aren't allowed to enjoy it.

Sometimes I wonder if certain posters lack reading comprehension or they just can't argue a point so they twist words and make assumptions.

Homophobia is very common in young males. Most get past it when they mature and reach middle age.

I completely agree with getting rid of all cheerleaders, Monster Girls, etc. And as a pubic service, I am offering for them all to come and live at my house, so that there is no way they can end up on tv and risk offending anyone.

I'll take that bullet, bros.

You are right, there is much more skin out on the beach and it is a family setting. No arguing that. I guess it comes down to expectations. At a beach you expect to see skin, and it makes sense given the setting (water, sand, heat). It's less expected at a motocross race.

I'm not saying I don't like seeing hot girls in small amounts of clothing. What I am trying to say, and maybe I didn't do it very well, is that it is my personal opinion that Monster Energy-style models are out of place in our sport. Jenny Taft, Georgia Lindey - awesome contributes who are wearing expect-able clothing.
