These are men, and in many cases still kids, who have sacrificed everything, including their childhoods to try and make a career and hopefully one day be a champion in this sport. If you have an opportunity to gain an advantage over your competitors, or even to be on a level playing field when it comes to recovery and being able to get the maximum out of your training, I’d say there’s a lot of motivation to do so. Throw in egos and a sense of competitiveness that most of us can’t even comprehend and you think there’s no incentive for these guys?
The comparisons to professional cycling have been beaten to death and sure it’s not apples to apples, but the mindset for someone who is in the 99th percentile of what they do in the world is no different…as it is in baseball, football, Olympic sports, etc. As with most things, it’s a hell of a lot easier to sit and pass judgement from the outside looking in. I would guess that many of these same people who are in denial are the same ones (it’s ok, I don’t expect you to admit it lol) who argued to the very end that Lance Armstrong was clean all those years. Lance knew he wanted to be the best, he knew what his competitors were doing and he was willing to do whatever it took to make that happen. Does that make him a monster or a bad person? Not in my opinion...
