A stock 450 is so good these days that claims don't make sense, and the works bikes are set up to their riders preference, which probably is way off from average rider preference
There are plenty of people out there with the money, skills, and/or boredom to want a damn near factory bike.

Top 20 up and comer, rich Senior rider, rich mini parents, etc. I can understand why the up and comer may not want to ruffle feathers but some Senior rider might want a sweet bike to come home with or some kid who barely qualified for the C or mini class with rich parents might think a sick bike is all he needs before he's ready to win Hangtown.

it would actually work if...

1. only the winning bike was up for claim

2. only the second place rider can make that claim

obviously that creates room for sandbagging, but who cares. If you wanna spend all that money and not win...that's your own stupid form of punishment.

The rule is real and you can currently claim any bike you want from first to last.
It hasn't happened in ages and I'm surprised no one has claimed the GEICO 150. I would bet the team would find a way out of it... I've been told in the days it happened the teams would quickly give money away to "friends" to also claim it making it a draw out of a hat deal

They made shit for that bike you can't get anywhere else. A lot more than 10K worth.

I'm saying 100K in total with development time and parts to make it.

I really don't think savatgy and ciancarulo are riding the same bikes as the team green kids. Everything I've heard from the kids who graduate to real factory rides is that the bikes are completely different.

Good investment.

Claim the 150. Sell it privately.

What would it cost to build/buy a similarly equipped PC KX250F? Obviously PC has markup on their pars but what % do we think it is? Just a full exhaust system is $800(retail) aka 10% of the MSRP of the bike. Would someone like PC use actual cost of retail cost to figure out the "value" of their bikes? So many questions!!!

The problem is that what PC, Star or whoever spends to build up a bike has little correlation to what someone would actually pay to buy the bike, so you would never get your money back if you want to sell it. Also, for most riders, you can buy a new bike, get motor work and suspension work done exactly to your preferences, and end up with a bike that works a lot better for you than someone elses bike that you claim, and come out spending less than 18K. So other than the "oooh, this bike has a bunch of cool parts" factor, it's not really such a good deal.

If you Claim a PC bike , I can only imagine the media on that one.I bet if you got close enough to your 18,000 and kinda leaked the info . That PC would cut you a deal on a new one. Just think , you know that they have an ungodly amout of PC parts that aren't available to the public in them.

You have to be qualified and in the race.

I heard the there is a silent agreement between the big teams that if someone were to make a claim that they would all jump in and also make a claim. This would dilute the chance of the original claimant and assuming a big team won, they would just sell the bike back.

This is fascinating, thanks to everyone that clarified the rules.

I guess another side to it is if you were a collector. Surely Stewart rode some pretty nice two strokes over the years. As he went on to being famous, owning a piece of history has to mean something to a collector.

Yes, he did. That's why I am confused with all of these people saying that it will never happen.

But isn't that rule very f*ck*d up? So if I turn up from out Belgium with a talented kid, buy craiglist Supermini, claim the best bike at the Area qualifier time practice and make that kid race that fast bike. We're doing nothing illegal?

Then I can sell the claimed bike, turn back to Belgium and do the same for the Regional and the Loretta Lynn race. Or not?

I've heard the same thing. It's pretty stupid really, the rule is there to stop mega dollar bikes being raced. How do you think you fair with a 1 in 5-6 chance of pulling the right number to win the claim drawing?

You would not get the bike until AFTER the event...

Hypothetical: You are that guy that knows he is is never going to get a factory ride so you claim a factory bike. To even up a little on the financial side, you offer up the bike to all the magazines and web sites to ride it, dyno it, tear it down, take pictures and write it up for their magazine.

1. Which magazine/web sites would even bid?

2. Who would win?

3. What would the winning bid be?
first off, your avatar distracts me

1. Would be one of the fringe sites, or someone building a name, the big boys would be afraid of losing sponsorship $$
2. ...??
3. You might get a chunk of change for it.

I think for the well to do vet rider it would be a blast

I think that the claiming rule's intent is good and some people should take advantage of it... no one needs to be riding some $40K supermini...

Google: mike alessi's bike claimed, 1st hit -
http://www.vitalmx.com/forums/MotoRelated,20/Alessi-03-Claimed-Super-Mini-FOUND,997443

A couple of more interesting results, this one includes a story of Villipoto's supermini being claimed by a mom from Ohio.

More of the same with the regularly added ThumperTalk flavor.

Most of the bikes are not worth the price, but the efi 150. Has GPS, throttle and engine data on it. I'm sure if you did do it they would load a map where it wouldn't run.

I think someone here at the board picked that bike up a couple of years ago. He started a thread about it If I remember correctly
