So what if he wants to start a family, newborns just sleep 70% of the time, the "being there" commitment doesn't ramp up until they're 1-3 y/o. Grant, Millsaps, Reed have a family and they are still doing the coolest careers that would beat being a regular neighborhood Dad for the next 18 years. Go for it! Musquin is the same age and he's committed to 2 more years! My neighbor just became a Dad at age 47! He'll never get an opportunity to do anything as prestigious to what he's doing now. Feeding a newborn and going grocery shopping is good, but being the one of the worlds best SX riders is not an common career. He's only 27! Dowd starting kicking A at 27. Take a long vacation, decompress and come back. I know my son would have wanted me to go for it as well if a had a Factory ride with the best team available. Hire JS7 to get a bit more speed secrets and 5-peat!

read your second to last sentence, then watch the press conference. Dungey states that taking time off last year to recover and getting a taste of the good life ("being at home in MN, fishing on the lake") made it very hard to stay as motivated to train/compete at such an elite level this year. Villo retired for the same reason, less drive/motivation. Dungey went onto say that he had some soul searching to do so at this point i think we just need to take what he says at face value.

my guess is that a child wouldn't have all that much of an impact on Dungey, he has a great support group behind him with his whole family. if he does retire i'd guess that it is dwindling drive to compete and an increasing drive to enjoy the fruits of his labor. that and getting older makes most people start to question risk vs. reward. he had an injury last year that he was incredibly lucky to walk away from, and now a friend that may have had a life changing injury (roczen). that stuff starts to weigh on us more the older we get.

Yea I guess. Can't live your life in fear of what may happen. If you do it's not your life anymore. Regrets suck more than injuries.

id bet a lot of cash he won't be lining up in 2018
Me too !! Some think he's going to skip the outdoors too, but I really want to see him give it one last outdoors with intent to WIN every race. Throw out the consistent side of things and hang it out with Eli. (Wishful thinking, but we've seen him ride out of his comfort zone a few times and it's so much fun to watch.)

I feel tomac will win 20+ motos this outdoors and dungey won't bother. he said it himself, he got a taste of how it would be to retired when he was out with injury last year and it was difficult to motivate himself. I just hope webb and anderson step it up. otherwise it will be the tomac show for year to come.

Takes a couple years off, has a kid, starts mtn. bike racing and wins a couple of world titles...that would probably make Eli's head explode. No matter what he does it's his life to live as he wants.

He's done with it. That's what Aldon does to you. Yes he gives you the best chance to win, but he drastically shortens your career through burnout and the beating your body takes.

My guess is that he will not race in 2018. Cheers to him.

When he wins the outdoor title there will be a bidding war.

Am I the only one who about 3/4 of the way thru the main last night had it set in that this was probably going to be dungey's last Supercross and take a second to appreciate how much of a legend he is. Actually gave me chills when I had that set in. He's got to be the most under appreciated legend.

I would say this is exactly right. The Nationals this year will be the stake through the heart of what started last year with his taste of the "good life" during his injury.

Yea, you've got something there, I think the Rick Johnson/ Blake Bagett approach has Alot of merit...

I'm sure his injury last outdoor season didn't motivate him to stay out there risking it any long then he has to. His wife is probably riding him (no pun intended) about settling down and starting a family.

My guess is Luongo has his chequebook out for Dunge. It worked with a burned out Villopoto, try it again :-)

Go Supercross only like MC/KDub/Reed/Larocco did to extend their careers, train/race October to May, then chill by the lake all summer. Best of both worlds.

It would suck for the outdoors, but it's better to have a rider of his stature for half the year than not at all.

I posted on another thread that Dungey sits out this summer in exchange for one or two more years indoor. No way KTM would not go for that. He could keep a baseline all summer in Mn. while still living a normal life. When everyone is recovering from outdoors he could get a jump on them for next year.

Dungey has been dropping hints for a while now - he want's to start a family, you have to keep in perspective what is important in life, racing SX & MX requires so much travel, I just wanted to three peat, the pressure of winning a Championships has a lot of stress and drama, I just want some normality in my life, I will only announce that I am racing if I feel I have prepared for it, I have given much of my personal life just preparing to race etc, etc, etc. All year Dungey has avoided talking about racing in the future and only talks about the present.

Not to mention the press and people in the know (yeah, like the people who run this web site) have been amazingly quite about wether or not Dungey is retiring. My bet is they already know and are keeping quite out of respect for Dungey

Listen to the post race press interview. Dungey talks about how strong his desire to be home, fishing and how it tugs at him wanting a normal life. All during the press interview Dungey looks uncomfortable and squirmed like a little kid holding in a secret he wants to reveal. He just won a SX Championship, instead of looking at the ground avoiding eye contact (starting with the question at 13:48), the expected reaction should have been just a lIttle of HE!! F'N YEAH I JUST WON THE SX CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!

He's pulling the plug...

That and I really think Roczen's crash/injury played a roll as well.

All that needs to happen is for me to win the lottery and he will be racing the GP's for two years. Stamp it!

Not sure if he's done but I cannot disagree on the Aldon part. I don't think riding has any fun factor at all for baker boys. Hope Dungey will be happy in whatever he chooses to do next.

Wasnt Villopoto still under contract with Kawi, which is why he went to the GP's? Dungey's contract is up. He's riding off into the sunset bros, he deserves it.
