Thank you in advance for any help!

A kid came into my shop with a basket case YZ250, who needed a spare engine that I had lying around for an old Honda.

I really wanted to help him out because the Honda engine had just been sitting, so I accepted his offer for a trade. I paid no mind to the old 99, and he sat it aside in the corner of our shop.

The bike was/ is in a million pieces, and after a few days I started rummaging through the boxes of parts that accompanied the bike.

When I located the cylinder I noticed it had some Engravings from March of 1999. I will attach a photo of the Engravings, which are what I am seeking help with.

Wondering if anyone can decode this cylinder for me? I called Pro Circuit first and whomever typically handles this sort of thing was not in today so I figured it would be fun to throw up on Vital.

Thank you guys, I hope you all had a great Monday!

I'd be lying if I said that's not what I was hoping for!

Of course, I did not want to be assuming at all!

If it is MC's cylinder you have a one off cylinder. My friend had the 250 PC built for MC in 92 to run some east coast rounds. He wrecked the cylinder by putting the ring in backwards. He bought a new OE cylinder and took it back to PC but they didn't match the porting. He said it never ran the same and he really loved the special cylinder. I'll bet PC could really help you get it dialed in. That would make the ultimate MC tribute YZ250.

That is one heck of a score!!!! I would be nervous if they pulled to old "send it to us so we can check it out" line. They should be able to verify by the engraving. If they cant, then try to contact Randy Lawrence, I believe he was the mechanic for MC that year.

Are those black head bolts also an indication that this cylinder is special? Or are all YZ head bolts of that era black?

They appear to be typical head studs per most Yamaha two strokes.

Good job thinking outside of the box however Wink

It's McGrath's cylinder specs for John Dowd's bike. Interestingly, Dowd got hurt in March of that same year.

Just a guess.

MC's cylinder more than likely. Cylinder #7 (I'd assume he many that year).
Not sure what the SPL would mean...
Would be kinda neat if that was off the bike from March of 99 when he won Daytona that year. Smile
He won every SX in March that year.

Those photos are just awesome. I have never been too nostalgic a guy.

But if PC confirms that I have something genuine, I will build this replica.

No doubt Jeremy was everything to me as a 90's kid at the races.

Sort of excited to do this now, especially with a YZ platform.

Those initials are clearly for Jean-Michel Gayle. He's a distant cousin of another former racer.

Pro Circuit 3/99

John Michael Grey - Stoichiometric Port Linear #7

JMG was a cylinder porter for PC for years, if you have come this far, you probably starting to feel that pain in your mouth from bitting the bait! lol

Don't you mean Jean-Michel Andrea Gayle? I'm pretty sure he drowned during the perfect storm.

No response yet.

That's hilarious about the bait! I honestly have not gotten too excited as the rest of the bike really does not stand out at all in terms of "factory" or really anything special. Very standard, but clean for it's age, 1999 YZ250.

I'd love to know more if you've got any other info past what you've already expressed?

Thank you all for chiming in!

Well, I got in touch with some of the boys at pro circuit today. Unfortunately it sounds like none of them have been there long enough to identify such an Engraving. They also mentioned that as long as they can remember, no one has ever engraved ported cylinders.

So I guess I have some more homework to do. They could literally be nothing or perhaps it is what some of you above have mentioned.

Matthes was a wrench on the Yami team.
You have your answer above.
Now, build it, brother. Smile

Definitely subscribing to this one!! Id go with Matthes advice too.

Is there anything else special about any of the other millions of parts you see for this bike that look hand made or billet cnc?

I reached out to Matthes via Instagram so hopefully he sees that and can chime in a little more.

There's literally nothing else about this bike that stands out about it. It's very clean for its age but also very stock and nothing special going on.

I will def. build this bike if I can find out more about the cylinder.

Thanks again to all who've donated time to this thread!
