My current Fox helmet is coming up for renewing soon and I'm thinking of spending a little more to get something good. What would you lot say offers the best protection?

There are 2 brands/models that i haven't tried. Fly F2 and the new Leatt helmet.
But i really want to put one thing clear. The company that makes all these helmets can make a shit helmet that has a MSRP of 100 bucks or a high end helmet for 800 bucks. 2 different brands helmets are not the same only because they are made in the same factory.
I have 2 Bell Moto 9 Flex helmets and one 6D helmet that come from the same factory in China and have the same pricepoint. Are they the same helmets? No, the Bell is a better made helmet in my opinion and at least feels more qualitative.
All these opinions are based on everyone's personal fit preference. If you have a brand of helmet you know fits your head well...the hard part is over. Now find a color scheme you like and pay the man. haha
from what I can tell its a thin smooth sheet of plastic which simply lets the liner rotate a little upon impact.
So all the stuff works!
I say go with Bell. They've only gotten better since the Moto 9 came out.
There's obviously other good helmets out on the market and truthfully I don't think you can go wrong with any of the higher end helmets.
Pick one that best fits your head, spend the money and don't be cheap.
I bought a 6D when they first came out. I like it.
I saw a brand new Fox helmet with MIPS the other day at the track and really liked it. It looked good, felt good, and seemed to have a high level of quality. Quality is what I do for a living, so anything I pick up it gets scrutinized by my Mk. 2, Mod 3 QA eyeballs.
I personally wear Shoei.

I can't really comment on any of the other high end helmets as I haven't owned any of them other than the Bell. I would really look at the TLD SE4 composite for the price tho.
Also if you wanna go see where the helmets are made, just go to alibaba.com and type motocross helmet. Or anything else. I just had a custom jersey made in china for $20. Picked all the materials and shit I wanted and uploaded my design and everything. Can do anything in China for fucking cheap.
There is plenty of data to support the 6D tech. Give them a call or check out the website.
Zach Bell was the probably first high profile pro that "tested" the 6D in his huge crash, 2013.
I've personally had two significant crashes wearing a 6D. Of course i'll never know if another helmet would have protected me more or less, but I believe Frank at REM, who witnessed my crash coming down Mt. St. Helens at Glen Helen when he said "that 6D helmet probably just saved your life."

What we need is a real unbiased source of consumer product reviews. All the magazines and basically everyone in this industry is all about advertising and shit. There's so much opinion and not a lot of fact. All this marketing bullshit to confuse everyone into just buying what looks cool.
Let's put some accelerometers into a few helmets and see what the difference in impact is. I highly doubt it's any different in any helmet model. 6d's suspension system just looks like a gimmick to me. What could it possibly help? When crash you have about 1" of room between your head and the ground. That's all the room you get to cushion that fall. The foam doesn't move, if anything it will dent under a lot of pressure and that's what will save you. But that's the same with any helmet you buy.
I think it's mostly bullshit. Just because you're paying more doesn't mean you're getting more. In the safety department at least. They've all got to pass the government ratings and beyond that it's probably all about aesthetic and comfort.
I know what you're saying, we're all fed a lot of BS in advertising with products that are crap and made in China. It's difficult to sort through the nonsense and the legit stuff.
I've checked 6Ds box, my opinion is it's the safest helmet money can buy so I like to share because I do think it would help you, others, anyone who wears it.

you dont call iphone chinese do you? just because it is manufactured in china by foxconn. foxconn and other chinese manufactures do contract manufacturing for maybe 20-30 different us and european brands at the same time.
they do from 50 usd mobile phones to iphones 800 usd.
helmet is the same thing.
The ventilation alone is worth it.
