First of all, how much is the current tariff? I dont think its much as the price of a ktm in europe is comparable. So if its $500 and now its $1000 so be it. Maybe they will start building something here and create jobs.

According to the post, it has to do with the ban on US beef due to hormones. The EU banned our beef because we jam it full of hormones. We now put a 100% tariff on goods from the countries that we see as the main culprits of imposing the ban.
This could potentially be a real problem. US farmers love hormones. Euros like American beef but not GMO products. Get your new Euro ride soon before...

You're confusing two completely different issues.

This has nothing to do with GMOs.

This is a loaded subject: “While some people cite Europe's ban on hormone-treated beef from the U.S. as evidence that hormones are a concern, Europe's own scientists have affirmed that hormone use in cattle production is safe. Unfortunately, European political bodies have rejected the science and refused to lift the ban. Because high quality U.S. beef is produced more efficiently and economically, it is a prime competitor to European-produced beef.”

Is that quote from you again?

This isn't about GMO at all. It's a continuation of a trade issue concerning hormone use in beef production that has been going on for decades.

There was an agreement in place that allowed the US (and Canada) to export higher quantities of hormone free beef to the EU, and apparently our government doesn't think that is happening correctly.

The agreement allows for the US to enforce retaliatory tariffs of a certain dollar amount, roughly equal to the amount of tariffs charged by the EU. Apparently the food items on the original tariff list wasn't generating a high enough number, so they needed to add another segment to reach that figure.

This certainly sucks for dealers who have invested in these brands.

Just seems weird that KTM specifically is being targeted. Someone outside of the Ag lobby helped them with that wording.

Consider this the first of many proposed sanctions on internal combustion motors. Not saying the EPA is involved in this one, but as long as lobbyists are involved in politics; you never know what decisions are being made due to influence from someone else's personal agenda.

I swear, our government can screw up just about anything. The sad thing is, if they won't accept our meat because it's so bad for you, instead of looking in the mirror and realizing we're killing ourselves with hormones, we instead try to strong arm them at the expense of our own citizens instead of fix the problem. I'm sure they have our best interests in mind though. . .Dry

This is all about the EU trying to protect its beef producers from lower cost US animal protein products. The US could produce, ship and sell these products there at a lower price than the EU producers can or care to try and match. They use the "hormone" argument to justify why they don't want US products sold there. A similar argument with GMO has been used by many nations for limiting grain imports from the US. It seems that whenever tariffs are involved for "any" product, US agricultural products get tangled up in it. Ag is the economic engine of the US hence an easy target to to take a swipe at.

The other "targets" on the tariff list appear to be animal protein products. The tariff threat for these items may not be enough of a monetary threat for the EU so the US has added motorcycles to increase the financial pain level. Hopefully this just amounts to "saber" rattling and nothing will become of it.

Alpman,

GMO stands for genetically modified organism. However you want to spin it, injecting hormones into cows is genetic modification.

What else does the US import from the EU with the same monetary value as Motorcycles that could be taxed and tariffed ?

We could be screwed on this unless they come up with rules to do final assembly of Euro Motorcycles in the US ?

Or the AMA changes the displacement rules to over 500cc ?

No, it's not GMO. It does not change the genetics of the animal.

Again, you're confusing two issues, whether intentionally or by pure ignorance. Based on your obvious disregard for honesty, I'm suspecting the former.

Simple correction Manny, the modular frames were not "self destructive" as you posted.

However, they did not react well to any foreign object ie: water, soil, other frames, hills, jumps, banners, mud puddles simply made them quiver...

So, other than a bike stand, and quite frankly the bike stand did a number on the lower frame rails, you could expect decades of reliable service from the machine.

A bit more on GMO:

Hormones and GMOs in our food supply

America one of the most advanced and wealthiest nations on earth is also one the sickest nations. But how could that be possible and what has happened along the way that the health of a nation has been comprised for the sake of few corporate elites and profit?

Hormone-GMO-food

How come all of a sudden it has become normal to accept the increasing number of chemicals, pesticides, wastes and toxins in our food supply, water and cosmetics? And how did we as a nation started to accept the scam of agribusiness industry to secretly genetically modify our foods or add harmful chemicals and factory wastes to our water and food supply or cosmetics?

Evolution of hormone in our food supplies:

Majority of livestock in the states are fed synthetic hormones that can increase the amount of estrogen that we consume in foods. Estrogen is an important hormone for female reproductive system and development of female sexual hormones. Estrogen also helps to control bone growth and cholesterol levels. Too much estrogen has been linked to breast, prostate and endometrial cancer. Humans are exposed to synthetic hormones when they consume animal’s meats that are injected with rBGH or rBST growth hormones. Hormones can increase the chances of cancer, thyroid disease, diabetes, obesity, infertility, asthma and allergies.

Hormones-in-dairy-meat

Hormones also find their way into our food supply via crops that are sprayed with pesticides or chemicals. They also exist in form of hormone plastic additives in baby bottles, infant formulas and food packaging. No wonder why we see an epidemic of hormone imbalances in women and young girls.

No, they don't consider it GMO. They simply don't agree with the scientific studies that say that the hormones don't have significant effects on humans consuming the meat.

There is a huge difference, and spouting off ignorant claims like you do doesn't help anyone look at the issue objectively.

Personally I'm okay with the EU banning beef raised with added hormones. But they need to honor their agreements when it comes to trade.

They did this back in the 80s also when Harley wanted to put a tariff on Japanese street bike 750cc and above because Harley was hanging on by a thread at the time. This was back when 750s were the norm so all the big four did was make all their 750 street bikes 700cc Wink Now they are picking on the Euro manufactures instead of the Japanese.
It was "large highway motorcycles" (ie cruisers) larger than 700cc. Which is why the Virago 700 (as you mention) was introduced the same year, at exactly 699cc.

Alpman,

Your Not going to win this argument with the EU.

GMO stands for genetically modified organism. However you want to spin it, injecting hormones into cows is genetic modification.

The Beef Hormone Dispute is one of the most intractable agricultural controversies since the establishment of the World Trade Organization. (WTO)

It was sometimes called the "beef war" in the media, similarly to the UK-EU Beef war over the mad cow disease issue, creating some confusion, since these two wars overlapped in time.

In 1989, the European Union banned the importation of meat that contained artificial beef growth hormones approved for use and administered in the United States. Originally, the ban covered six such hormones but was amended in 2003 to permanently ban one hormone —estradiol-17β — while provisionally banning the use of the five others. WTO rules permit such bans, but only where a signatory presents valid scientific evidence that the ban is a health and safety measure. Canada and the United States opposed this ban, taking the EU to the WTO Dispute Settlement Body. In 1997, the WTO ruled against the EU. The EU appealed the ruling.

I can't tell if you're really this obtuse or.......

I'm not arguing with the EU. I'm not even saying that they should be forced to import beef from cows raised with the "banned" hormones.

I'm telling you that your reference to GMO was stupid and ignorant. This isn't a GMO issue.

And I'm an organic farmer who is mostly against the production of GMO foods.......

You are correct, like you didn't know.Smile A GMO is not the same as using hormones.

A cow can be injected with hormones to grow faster/bigger. To do that as a GMO, genes would need to be put into cow DNA. A cow would then have to give birth to a calf with the altered DNA, resulting in a GMO calf. It's not the same as cloning either.

Most GMO's are plants and most are to make them resistant to heavy use of pesticides and herbicides. Which is where a lot of negativity towards GMO's started, rightfully so. They now spray Roundup just prior to harvest on grains to help dry them out.Sick Evil

BTW I'm not a Euro legislation fan it seems to be very biast to those in the Euro community and even then it seems to suit certain countries in it better than others, hence Brexit!

And what do American cows eat ? GMO modified feed. In the minds of the EU American Beef is tainted.

Spin it however you want but your argument isn't with me but with EU politicians. Good luck winning that argument.

So the question is if this tariff passes can we import assemblies and do the final assembly of the motorcycles listed in the US to bypass the tariff ?

So the EU may have a point ?

Fact Sheet on Hazards of Hormone Implants or Injections in Beef

This is Your Beef on Drugs:. The Health and Environmental Risks of Hormones in Meat

Hormones in our food supply?

Since the early 1970s, hormones have been used extensively in the production
of beef and milk in the United States, with hormone development research
starting as far back as the 1950s. As many as two-thirds of
cattle raised in the U.S are treated with hormones.

Although growing numbers of consumers and scientists have expressed concerns
about potential human health risks of this practice, the USDA and FDA have
approved the use of six hormone growth promotants (HGPs) in the cultivation
of beef cattle, and one more hormone used to increase milk productivity. Only a few other countries have approved the use of HGPs, while many others have banned their use.

The hormones are implanted or injected into cattle in various stages of
maturity, but are not allowed in calves. Hormones used in beef
cattle include the male hormone testosterone and its synthetic equivalent
trenbolone acetate, and the female hormone progesterone including three
synthetic derivatives zeranol , 17 beta-estradiol, and melengestrol acetate
(MGA). All HGPs are either implanted or injected into the cows except
melengestrol which is a feed additive.

Hormones and Cancer

The European Union (EU) has banned the importation of American and Canadian
beef grown with the use any growth hormone, including 17 beta-estradiol
because studies have shown that it is a "complete carcinogen."

This synthetic form of progesterone shares similar characteristics with a
class of other molecules called endocrine disruptors that imitate other
human hormones in the body and have been linked to diseases such as cancer.
Zeranol, another progesterone-imitator, has also been linked to cancer in a
recent study done at Ohio State University. Scientists exposed breast
cancer cells to zeranol-treated beef. The results indicated significant
increases in cancer growth. Some showed an increase even with zeranol
levels 30 times below the level the FDA considers safe. Itshould also be noted that the FDA does not permit any residual MGA to showh up in beef residue testing. It is considered a suspected
carcinogen by the USDA[.

Hormones in the Environment

With tons of hormones injected into beef and veal cattle, many of these
hormones end up in farm run-off in the form of solid and liquid waste.
Sanitary waste treatment is seldom found on factory farms, and many farms
simply have waste settling ponds that are easily flooded.

Hormones can then flow into nearby rivers and streams, as well as underground aquifers,
eventually ending up in drinking water. Endocrine-disruptor expert Ana Soto
concluded that hormone levels in water run-off found in one downstream study
"would be sufficient to produce a significant effect on target cells" and
her study¹s findings "point to the need to take steps to curtail
environmental degradation caused by the release of these chemicals into
bodies of water." A study done by a EPA fresh-water research facility in Duluth, MN found that
female fish exposed to trenbolone in water developed bumps on their heads normally only witnessed in
male fish whentheir natural testosterone levels were elevated. There was a general
pattern where female fish were slightly masculinized and male fish slightly
feminized by trenbolone exposure.

The reproductive impacts observed in fish raise concerns that hormones used
in beef and consumed by people might be a factor in rising incidence of
premature development in girlls and lower sperm counts in men.

Conclusion

Given the potential of growth hormones to act as carcinogens and as
reproductive toxins, combined with the demonstrated downstream effects of
hormone run-off from feed lots, it is recommended that people
seek organic or hormone-free beef, or beef alternatives. These are the
surest ways of avoiding consuming unwanted additives in your beef.
