This is an educational post, so skip it if you come to vital with the hopes of being dumber than you were before you showed up.

Pictures like this circulate every once in awhile so people can look at them on facebook and reaffirm their sense of morality by showing some sort of outrage. They're circulated by users to boost the ego of the user as a form cognitive confirmation. The nature of social media creates a feedback loop for these posts.

Anyways, the people who shoot these animals aren't doing it through tag raffles like you would for a run of the mill elk or deer shoot. They are typically sold to high bidders and bids go into the 6 figures. The animals that are killed are singled out and the hunter is only allowed to take that particular animal which the park, nature reserve, whatever rangers have been monitoring extensively for a long period of time. Those animals you see were sold as trophies before the shooter set foot in that country.

The reason they do this is two fold. 1. The park deals with a limited number of animals of a particular species and, as a result, there are sometimes outliers that create risk for the other members of the species. Oftentimes it's older males that grow too old but at the same time too strong. They will lose reproductive viability but still be able to kill younger males looking to mate. This is common with rhinos. These animals threaten future generations and so the wildlife reserve will single them out to be culled from the population for the preservation of the species.

2. These parks struggle to raise enough money through donations to pay for staff and equipment to help the wildlife. The people who talk about how much they want to save endangered animals typically don't give large sums of money to the nature reserves. The sport hunters, however, are willing to pay huge amounts of money ($100,000 goes a long way in any African country).

So the reserves pick 1 animal that needs to be removed, they sell that animal to the highest bidder and they end up with someone willing to pay them a large amount of money to do a chore for them.

Policing poachers is very expensive. Oddly enough, the contributions made by these hunters are the largest source of funding for policing that these places get.
It's almost as if people didn't even read this. You are 100% correct.

The stupidity in this thread is of epic levels! No understanding of how and who sets these hunts up and how many thousands of people and communities it benefits..... no suprise!
This guy gets it. No point in trying to convince them, they don't want to understand, it's much easier to stand ignorantly on your moral pedestal than to look at reality.

I hope all you guys bashing hunting don't eat meat, don't wear leather shoes (or riding boots), no leather seats in your car, don't feed your pets food with animal parts...I could go on and on.

Sure hunting for "sport" is something not everyone understands or enjoys, but the money generated from that does more to help these animals than all the bleeding heart comments ever will.

Want to educate yourself? Look up the Joe Rogan Podcast episode with Jim Shockey.

I love how just because Grant Langston is someone famous and from Africa that he's all the sudden an expert....that's like assuming anyone from Idaho is a potato expert. I've heard Langston speak on hunting, his ignorance level is high as well.

I'll go ahead and step back and put on my flame suit now...

That Jimmy Johns montage pops up on an annual basis.

After the Cecil the Lion shitshow, trophy hunters quit going and paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to shoot the old decrepit lions. Eventually they ended up shooting off 200 or so of them anyway. Where was your outrage then?

By the way, I am not a hunter.

And Langston is a dumbass dirt bike rider. Who outside of this little sport even knows who the hell he is?

Seems the culling of the herd isn't beneficial to wild animals alone ...

People get paid to kill innocent animals, it's their job. Ever been to a meat packing plant? Do you eat meat? Farmers raise herds of innocent animals that are slaughtered to put meat on the table for millions. The health of impoverished nations is being improved by the increased access to animal protein through the slaughter of innocent animals.

It's a shame that our countries rural population is declining. Small town people see what it takes to feed the masses and the fact that millions of animals are raised to be killed and butchered. Urban dwellers can get them themselves isolated from witnessing these realities and it distorts their rational thinking.

I assume everyone remembers the Cecil incident where the lion was killed? Once all the anger died down, it was revealed that the preservation service needed the funds from that type of hunting in order to protect other animals. After all the money dried up due to negative press, there was a spike in poachings. You may not like what these people do, but in some cases it can do more good than harm.

Amazing how people have issues with animals that are hunted thousands of miles away, but I bet have no issue with late term abortions. hahaha. I hope the idiots that are against hunting and harvesting animals enjoy their leather seats, boots, etc.... Not to mention the burgers, steaks, chicken, etc.... that they eat. Get over yourselves and quit being so freaking sensitive.

Killing an animal that is grazing like a cow is so fucking pussified. Go there with a camera and pay the same fee to help police poachers then come home.

Fuck these guys.

I catch hunters trespassing on my farm ever year. One day I'm gonna loose it with one an go to jail.

From the time my grandpa gave me my first gun, he instilled in me the belief of if you kill it you eat it. If these trophy hunts are legal yes, it can be beneficial to the species and locals. However, it is not hunting so much as culling of that particular animal. Big difference. I do believe these trophy hunters have bigger wallets than peckers.

Not all trophy hunts are legal. Cecil the lion was lured out of his protected range by illegal and immoral "hunting guides", so that he could be shot by the dentist. Some people just suck.

My question is how the heck did they get the elephant set up like that for the picture. Do they have tractors out in BFE safari or do the locals come out and use brute force?

Is it me, or is this just old news? He's been under fire for this for a long time. It doesn't seem to really be a current issue.

An avid hunter, Liautaud acknowledges the biggest misconception about him is that people still connect him to 10-year-old photos of him posing with elephants, rhinos and other endangered animals he shot, photos which have prompted calls for boycotts in recent years. Just asking him about it makes his eyes well up with tears.

"I choose to hunt and I choose to fish," he said. "Everything I've done has been totally legal. And the meat has been eaten, if not by me than by someone I'm with. I don't hunt big African game anymore."

What's legal is legal. Ironic, yes, but to judge a man or any group of people for this is unnecessary. I don't hunt for game because I feel like there are better ways to spend my time, however, it's a part of life and culture so I accept it as reality. Everyone on here saying it's "sick" or "he's a pussy," you're probably just jealous because you don't have $100k to mess with, let alone throw at a dead elephant. Tongue

There's a difference between being a farmer and produce meat for your own survival as well as a market of millions of people who rely on that, and killing tigers, elephants, rhinos, etc for fun and be proud of it.

You're an idiot, dude. This man had a legal hobby that he doesn't even partake in anymore , and there are idiots like you ready to slander a company on Vital at the drop of a fuckin' hat! And yes, before you make yourself look like an idiot, you should read everything in a thread before you post a comment. You'd be surprised how much it changes vital for you.
