the rotational force is simply being transferred from your wrist/knee to somewhere else usually the tib/fib

Tore my ACL back in '04 and since then I'm wearing a custom fit CTi on each knee every time I throw a leg over a seat. Take advantage of the doctors prescription to have insurance cover most of the cost.

i've read somewhere that private health cover can help with the costs, not sure ofthe details it was in one of the moto mags recently. might pay to ring somewhere like iselect and they might know more about it

After a bad tib/fib fracture experience I thought a lot about this subject. My tib/fib took over a year to even start repairing, and then nearly a year to finish. Doc said it was not unusual due to poor circulation at the end of the leg as I had some circulatory system damage too. I remember thinking I would rather have the damage up higher in the leg - than at the end of the tib/fib, but who knows?

If the forces were largely transferred up the leg - or distributed up the leg, would that be better?

Would a femur break have healed quicker?

Hard to tell. Maybe time for me to join the Pipe and Slippers Club...

I completely snapped my MCL in practice at a British championship race in 1987. Front end washed out and leg got bent at 90 degrees to the side. Soooo painful for ten minutes then eased up a bit. Borrowed Thorpey's CTi brace and raced that same day, even getting a third in one Moto.

Went to see my Doctor Monday and told him what had happened, and that the pain had subsided so I figured it wasn't that bad. He told me it was f***ed and that it didn't hurt so much now because the ligament was completely snapped so hence wasn't pulling on anything any more. I told him I had to keep racing and he said that if I did, I couldn't really do any more damage. However I tried the next week but it was no good.

Had surgery and 6 weeks in full plaster then back to racing a couple of weeks after that (I was a pro so needed to get back). The biggest problem was lack of knee movement after 6 weeks of immobilisation. The plaster never stopped me doing stuff though, and I remember (foolishly now) fitting a TV aerial on my roof with one leg in plaster up to my thigh. Borrowed an automatic car and kept driving with just my left foot too. How dumb are we when we are young?

Got CTi's after that and no further injuries.

I now ride with Alpine Stars braces, which are very comfortable. Don't notice them, and in any case, believe me, uncomfortable knee braces are still infinitely more comfortable than a knee injury.

Always been my line of thinking, straight bones are easier to repair over joints which can be a never ending problem. That being said a broken femur can bring nasty complications with the femoral artery in close proximity.

Seen a good friends get his leg caught under the bars when the front washed out, knee brace saved him folding is knee backwards but snapped his femur instead....never heard a grown man scream like that.

Spine, femurs and pelvis are the big ones that worry me...everything else is fair game haha

I'm not being a smart-ass, I'm really curious because I've been on the fence regarding knee braces. You can ride back to the truck with torn ligaments but a compound fracture of a bone is something entirely different.
I'd rather have a broken tin /fib than a blown out knee. Bones heal. Joints and ligaments are a little more important.

Couple of partially torn MCL's from moto, both knees, and a broken my femur about 6 inches below the socket skiing. Oh yeah, 2 skier thumbs, from skiing, with basically double jointed thumbs now.

Had Asterisk braces on every time and was also a rep for them during those years, maybe 2002-08. I firmly believe they helped to minimize the damage in every case, limiting the MCL's to grade 1/2 instead of completely tearing the ligament. Wearing Mobius the last 2 years and pretty happy, with best impact protection for the knee cap that I have seen.

In the skiing accident, I hip checked into a rock that looked like deep snow, it wasn't. I set my leg onto it, broke it, but then sort of in one motion transferred my weight downhill and kind of bounced up on to my other ski. In the moment of adrenaline I tried to stand on the broken leg and immediately knew I was f'd. Went down the narrow chute I was in another 50 feet and fell over on the good side. I distinctly remember my leg flopping around and thinking I was glad to have the brace on in that situation as it sort of stabilized the whole leg.

Btw....there was another thread started about the thumbs recently. If you read this, don't try racing with a bad thumb that is feeling ok and that has been well taped. Hand came off the bars on a big step down with that one.

Tuck and roll!!!!!!!!!!

EVS axis Pro.....best knee braces ive ever worn...have had 4sets.....best warranty......getting ready to buy a 5th....i get a fresh set every season, im fortunate to be a supported rider so the braces dont cost me much....but i wouldnt ride without them....for me its essential leg protection,as are good boots....and helmet...please dont take the chances with a knee...i know many racers who cant ride because their knees are so bad...surgury can help repair whats damaged...but it will always hurt...and be a discomfort....buy knee braces before you buy a wheel set or exhaust....your safety should come first

That is exactly why i wear Asterisk with the anti rotation tether buckled up.

Sorry to hear of another injury to you, heal up soon.

Like most of us just the thought of watching your video makes my stomach twist.

Will you get back on the bike again? or is it too soon to make that call?

If you guys have insurance that'll cover knee surgery, you have insurance that'll cover some shiny, new Ossur/CTi knee braces. I've had several sets and never paid a dime. Had a real bad tibial plateau fracture that no knee brace could prevent, but with all the ligaments coming off with pieces of bone fragment, the knee braces were prescribed after surgery for the affected knee. I just asked for both, and got em. Wouldn't ever ride without em! Go to their website and find a local place that will fit them properly (they should cast your legs). Also need to order the "MX-kit" to get the condial pads and mx knee pads. Also provide some great covers for the brace joint to prevent destroying your graphics. Please msg me if you'd like more info. Be glad to save someone some $$, headache and knee damage!
