Take your tin foil hat off...if solar was better that fossil fuels (more efficient, more affordable, etc. etc.) people would be lining their pockets with solar money.

Right now, today, solar isn't better...it's less efficient, and therefore more expensive than oil...that is why electricity still isn't renewable.

I have no bias towards fossil fuels...I don't care where our energy comes from....I just want it to be as cheap as possible. And right now, fossil fuels are the most efficient and therefore the cheapest.

Maybe one day Solar (or wind, or hydro, or nuclear, etc. etc....collectively or individually) will surpass fossil fuels in efficiency and affordability...and when that day comes, I'll absolutely support that energy source...but that day isn't today.

So for now, electric vehicles aren't powered by a renewable energy source.

(Never mind all the "non-renewables" in those all important batteries in electric cars)

(Sorry for the tangent, O.P.)
You do realize an investment in solar for your home will be completely paid off in 6-8 years depending on where you live. Once it's paid off you are effectively making or saving (how ever you look at it) the money each month forward. Most solar systems have a 30 year lifespan.

I have a good friend who has solar along with 3 electric vehicles. His system paid for itself many years ago plus it now pays for his monthly transportation costs. On top of that he donated almost 1000 dollars to his local utility company in generated electricity for the year. They will allow him to be zero cost but will not reimburse overages.

His footprint on earth has to be one of the lowest for modern countries.

My neighbor has a Tesla and an F12 Berlinetta.

The F12 has the remote exhaust valve. He runs it open except when Idling through the neighborhood and its not exactly quiet in closed mode.

He said " Nothing can replace the sound and excitement of a gnarly engine. There are no smiles when you turn on a Tesla. Nobody gives a shit because its just a classy Prius."

Football is silent. Millions of viewers. Basketball is silent. Millions of viewers.
Hockey, baseball the list goes on. It will be different, and I know how much you old turds fear change, but it will not hurt the sport.

Say 200,000 people are riding or racing in the US now and stadiums aren't being filled for supercross because there are only 500 places to ride a dirt bike so involvement is at an all time low per capita.

What if 400,000 people are riding and racing because there are 3000 places to ride? These numbers are arbitrary but relevant.

With such a boring racing that we have for couple seasons I already watch it ONLY because I love the sound. Why would I waste my time to watch silent "racing" on bikes so easy to ride that even my granny can jump on it and tear glen helen? I will go and watch MotoGP. That's RACING.

Electric MX looks and sounds extremly pathetic, I will say it again: if it's not gonna be "cool" it won't bring new people to the sport thats how I see it. Rednecks won't buy it.They can build thousands of new tracks but who said there will be people who wants to ride? I think scooters are really fun to ride, so why skaters and bmx'ers are making fun of them instead of riding one? Because scooters are lame, no matter how fun they are no one treats them seriously.

But that's my opinion. Maybe I'm wrong, time will show us.

And comparing motosports to football... I don't know what to say.

Not sure what Tesla he has. If it's a P85D, P90D or P100D it will flat blow the doors off that Ferrari stop light to stop light. I get a massive grin whenever I stomp on my "go" pedal. In fact, it's almost more pleasurable cause it's done in silence and people don't know what the hell happened.

Stick and ball sports have millions of viewers. More athletes and teams make a living within the sport, and participation is higher. You're right, stick and ball sports are unlike Motorsports in many ways.

Some of you guys are scared of everything new, if it were for you we wouldn't have 4 strokes.
Oh wait, we wouldn't even have 2 strokes, oh wait, we wouldn't even have engines, oh wait, we wouldn't even have wheels...

It's not something new, it's changing something that you love into something very different, it's like your super hot wife turning into fat monster with haircut that you hate. If you would meet her now for the first time you probably wouldn't even look at her but it's your wife, maybe she doesn't giving you a boner anymore but you love her.

Same with electric mx. We are probably still gonna do it as it's something that we love, but don't except people to be excited about taking away most of the things that was making us horny.

I'm not in love with the sound. I'm in love with the racing. Sure, a well-tuned engine sounds awesome, but it's secondary to the racing for me.

noise is neat. acceleration is neater. when the mind shift allows the gen pub to separate the two, racing will embrace acceleration. Electric is a shift and will meet resistance (pun intended) but when lap times and statistics equalize or even improve, opinion will follow. You'll lose some fans (read this thread for died in the wool noise addicts) and you'll gain some fans who previously saw racing as a miss use of energy.

Me, I work in the EV industry. I'm way on board. I want an Alta next to my 2 strokes. (who the fuck wants valves?).

The problem is nobody cares and anyone can buy a Tesla. They are everywhere here.

And nobody uses any of these cars potential.

Nobody uses the cars potential? You might wanna check YouTube. Plenty do. Including me.

And ANYONE can buy a Tesla? Wow, economy must be booming way more that I thought. Everyone can afford $130k cars like it's nothing. That is great. I'll start looking for Taco Bell ground beef slingers to be rolling in them.

Even the base model around $70k is out of reach for many households. I'm not bragging, I feel blessed to be in a position to own one. But your woefully ignorant statement that ANYONE can buy one and NOBODY uses it to their potential is ridiculous.

And NOBODY cares?? I can't tell you how many times I've spent 20mins in a parking lot talking about the car to some random person walking by. I've even taking many for a quick ride. It blows their mind.

Anyone with the cash can also own that Ferrari as well. It's not like it's some ultra rare exotica. Actually, they are literally everywhere in Palm Beach. Spotting a Ferrari is YAWN in this part of the US. You need to have something extremely rare around here to make a head turn. Even 918 Spiders are seen several times a week. Shit, my neighbor has a 488GTB and more neighborhood kids ask me for rides in the Tesla than in his Ferrari. And yes, the Telsa smokes the 488GTB for a 1/3 of the price.

Also I heard someone was racing this bike at the Straight Rhythm race soon.

I would say at least 80% of the people living in Cali of driving age can afford a tesla. They are not cool. Yes i have ridden in one and no it wasn't fun. It just felt boring. It's not about performance. That's why people like 2 strokes. It takes skill. Each time we change the engine for more performance and ease of use is a backwards step for moto. Are you impressed by easy things? Most aren't and electric moto with no gears really will become just twist the throttle and it will do most of the work. A sport for pussies. Not cool in any way, shape or form. I'm impressed when I know just how hard something is to do, not how easy.

I won't argue your opinion as you have every right to it but 80% of the California legal driving age population can afford a $70k car in Cali?

Wow! Just wow! You guys are some rich sum bitches out there.

Especially since the median household income is $64,500 and your home prices are way above average for the country. I need a California financial calculator. Maybe I could get two Teslas with Cali math.

I will correct my statement. 80% of eligible California drivers could finance a tesla. Finance being the key word. This is the caveat: I can't count how many people I see driving cars that are equal to the value of their home or live in cheap(relatively speaking) apartment complexes to have said car. I just want to watch the most talented racers in the world go at it knowing how hard it is. I had my best times when I was young and rode a honda cr80 with no power valves. You either were on the pipe or you were fouling plugs. Had to be in the right gear, use the clutch, have enough corner speed, etc. All that will be gone and it really strikes a nerve with me. I'm not even old, just turned 30 last month. I ride my buddy's yz250f and yz450f sometimes. I average 4 seconds per lap faster and can go longer on the 250f. 450f is same lap time as 250f but get tired faster from hanging on so hard. I get all the new tech but I don't think it has a place in moto and nothing will grow the sport. It is meant to stay small and i'm ok with that. If it's too easy I will lose interest. I can only speak for myself though.

Seems likenif you live in California you either drive a Tesla or live below the poverty line.

This thread has jumped the shark.

Congrats to Alta, if their bike wasnt so good this thread would not exist.

I'm curious as to how you can figure everyone's finances out by what they drive or where they live? My in-laws are worth well over one million dollars. They drive a Kia...and it's financed. Hardly a car that's indicative of their financial status. The home they sold before moving to Florida (insert stereotypical retiree joke here) was a modest home that they'd built in the 70's.

Some people finance vehicles because rates are so cheap they can make more than they pay with interest on the loan. People around here sometimes talk like financing is bad. When done correctly, it's not so bad and hardly an indicator of what someone can or can't afford.

Don't paint with such a broad brush. You never know someone's story. There's plenty of "hidden" millionaires that you'd never know about. And there's plenty of "ballers" who are broke. To make an assumption without fact is never a good move.

With logic like that, I really hope you're riding an old elsinore or something with no travel, etc. I don't know what bike you ride, but I can guarantee you there's probably an 80-90 year old man that thinks you're a pussy and will need a viagra to get it up (was it you that dropped that excellent line earlier?) because your bike is too easy to ride and not exciting. It's all relative, but I will say that if you need verification for your manhood from the type of bike you ride, then you may have bigger issues than lack of excitement from racing.

PS, no offense meant to Elsinores. They are cool as hell.

The bike weighs 251lbs, but somehow it looks like a 125 in that video. 10 years from now when they weigh 200, wow.

I can only speak for myself though.

Good point. Finance should be used as a tool. Not a means to get something that you really can not afford.

Couldn't agree more. Seems like some people here though assume that because it's financed it means you really couldn't afford it. When rates are next to nothing, why not play with the bank money instead of your own while your money is working for you?

Nothing about an electric motor is elegant. This Jag V12 on the other hand is elegant, sexy,, loud, full of craftsmanship, and the awsome sound would damn near give my wife an orgasm. Electric vehicles do none of those things. They lack everything that make motorsports exciting. This will prove out as soon as somone tries to sell tickets to a MX, Nascar, NHRA, or any other event with all electric motors.

Also, the electric motor was invented 130 or so years ago, roughly same time combustion engine has been around. It's not a new solution to the combustion motor.

I see nothing elegant about that at all . Looks more like a hodgepodge of inefficient systems mashed together to me .

The thing is though, for MOST Americans, its financed because they really couldn't afford it. There are exceptions, but the exceptions prove the rule.

Ive never heard anyone refer to a Jaguar V12 as a hodgepodge. Anyway, turn your speakers up and let me know if this does anything for you.

I assume you mean the sound ... if so , no it does nothing for me . Sound wise , I prefer this , because it is more like what I am familiar with .

Still not sure what sound has to do with racing though ...
