Wanna hear a cool story Bro?

Texas Series 1976? Lake Whitney, Cyclerama, 1 other? and the final at Rio Bravo.

Pro class favorite Roger Brown on a twin shock white KTM. Famous newcomer to motocross starts the series and finishes way back in the pack. Each race the newcomer does a little bit better. Last Moto of the final race and the rider everyone had been making fun of is giving Roger all he wants (and Roger didn't need to win the race to win the series) and it comes down to the final huge finish line jump. Roger knows the new guy was gonna give it all he had and Roger pushed it further than he ever had to hold him off. It didn't work. The long haired Honda rider let's it rip, and flies farther than imaginable over the final jump, and is so high in the air that he has time to casually shoot a 1 handed peace sign in the air as he wins the race. Roger ends up out of control unable to stop and crashes into a fence on the exit lane smashing his bikes front end.

So jumping the furthest may not work in every case, but in my old school memory, it sure did on that one.

The rider was Gary Wells, the same one who almost died jumping the fountains at Cesar's Palace.

Squids huh?

If you hit it the same speed, wouldn't you be going the same speed?

If you "overjumped" wouldn't you be going further, faster?
No. Traditional jumping spends more time im the air, so speed diminishes in comparison to the scrub that reduces air time while getting back on the gas quicker. it allows you to hit jumps faster without time wasted while "skying" it out.

Scrubs allow more speed on the take off, spends less time in the air, and gets back on the throttle quicker.

Its all about trajectory. .

I'm just wondering if there is any "scientific" proof. Like the same rider doing laps both ways? How do we KNOW it works? If the other guy flies further, the "scrub" guy has lost ground and he better get on the gas sooner or he is getting passed.

And don't all you guys get your panties all bunched up, you are being trolled a bit. You know, sarcasm lightly veiled.

Can someone please explain the physics of a scrub as it relates to the seat bounce?

Exactly my point. If you were to mono in, then seat bounce it, that would rock.

(some old school TFS verbage).

Yes, a scrub, if done correctly maintaining the fundamentals of a true "Bubba scrub" can save time.

But let's get one thing straight. This thing that 99% of local squids are doing that they call a scrub has no relation whatsoever to what Bubba does.

So you want a peer reviewed, scientific paper showing the efficacy of scrubbing? No...I don't think there's scientific proof. Only common sense.

Yes, the fastest way from point A to B is a straight line. The flatter the trajectory, the closer you get to a straight line.

Science proves the trajectory theory mathmatically.

Consider this, if you throw a ball high into the air you would see a curved path from point A to B. Conversely, if you take the same ball and throw it directly fom point A to point B then you have a much straighter path, which is the fastest way from A to B.

Is there any chance that rider's get more tired from scrubbing, and then have to slow down later in the race? I know most riders don't train like James does these days.

It takes a little bit more effort. But most people that are serious in the sport do actually train really hard to stay in the best shape possible

Wow with all those post you must ride a lot. If that is you in the photo you are faster than me I bet. Started in 1971 I guess. I've taken a few years off here and there. Why do you ask?

Sure it can go wrong, remember trey canard going too low and clipping the top of the jump he was scrubbing. I think he ended up with a broken femur.
Thing is, everyone does it now over most jumps, its rare to see a rider just jump straight over pretty much every jump these days. It has now become just a way of riding that I think most guys don't even think about it anymore

Haha was practicing at lake Whitney on my yz80 back in 94. My dad was playing with jets n stuff. He forgot to tighten the needle on the carb this particular time. I came out of the S turn before the finish line and was pinned as usual to make it over the table. Well when I had enough speed I went to let off to not over jump it. And well it held wide open. I just remember looking down and seeing the landing going beneath me. I landed in the sweeper after and the bike rolled up on me. Burned some rubber in my fox pants with the back tire. Anyway reminded me of good times! haha

I've been trying to find any good pictures of Tony Cairoli scubbing? Does he know how? I know he's not the fastest guy anymore though, I think he got 2nd?

Has anyone ever proven that scrubbing is faster? It certainly looks cool, and I'm sure it uses more energy, so just wondering??
Yeah for sure. Scrubbing lower means less air time. How ever I'm sure a WHIP would slow you down. Next time you're watching a super cross battle and two riders hit the jump the same time and speed. The lower guy will often be first to the corner
10/8/2016 2:45am
I feel way more comfortable flicking the bike to the left than to the right. If a jump is on a right hand corner then I'll love but if it's on a left hander the I just can't get my body position right.

An example. O'mara's jump at Maggoria would be a big problem for me coz I just can't the back to flick to the right. Not that I could even get close to clearing that jump.

If my bike gets a kick from a jump & it goes left I'm in control but if it goes right I'm just a passenger. This really bugs me.

for me its kind of strange i scrub to the left but whip to the right its kind of silly i know but i feel more comfortable that way

FYI i only scrub on wall jumps Singles were you cant really air unless your r Bagget

I'm not sure I fully understand the question but I'll give it a go.

The reason a scrub works is because when you enter a jump face, your suspension compresses. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction right? That means the suspension must rebound. Rebound is an upward force as you leave the face of the jump. By scrubbing, you direct that force to the side. Some much more than others. The result is less upward force and therefore, less upward trajectory.

With a seat bounce, you are essentially putting more force into the bike on the face which means it compresses more. The equal and opposite reaction to this would be more rebound and therefore more upward force. Sometimes, to really get over an obstacle, one will seat bounce while also pulling back on the bars. Pulling the front end up while putting more weight on the rear has an even bigger effect.

FYI, the key to seat bouncing is being on the gas progressively up the face. Let off and you are going to endo.

Silly thread. But I'm reading it so, yea. Watch a race you have Tivo'd and FF it on the lowest FF advance. Can really see how riders slow in the air. Tight spandex gear next big thing.

I wish you didn't say it because that means we are that much closer to it happening. The secret is out now. As soon as Stewart actively markets that particular feature of Seven gear, you'll see every major gear company replicate it within 18 months. Stewtards combined with Vitards? There is no stopping them!

No worries, it was a poor attempt at an old mx forum joke, look up the old seat bouncing threads...hopefully a few old schoolers got a chuckle out of this.
